Circa in the Admiral District has good burgers…call ahead for take-out…

LucyMemberI wouldn’t recommend Amante. We’ve tried them a few times and were pretty underwhelmed.
Luciano’s also has more than Pizza -Gyros, sandwiches, pasta, etc. They are much better than Amante, IMO.
Also, if you like Indian try Maharaja. It’s surprisingly good.
I’ve yet to find acceptable Thai delivery in West Seattle. For now, I’ll continue to get take out from Buddha Ruksa. The garlic chicken is to die for!

SueParticipantdunderp, thanks for the heads-up on the pastrami place – I work right near the Market, so I’ll be sure to stop on over and check it out. I don’t think I realized how much I missed pastrami until I was back in NY and walked into the Pastrami King and wanted to cry at the smell of the place. LOL!
House, I agree that Ho Win is more “east coast style” than a lot of other places. I still find it a bit mediocre (I’m with Kayleigh on her opinion of most chinese food in Seattle), but it’s closer than many other places. I still cringe at the mixed vegetables in my “eggdrop” soup though. And for what passes for an eggroll out here.

MinoruMemberAmante on California has more than pizza and they deliver. We tried them once and they were just OK.
Just today we saw a van for “Restaurants to Go” (http://www.restaurantstogo.com/) driving around. Seems like they deliver from various restaurants in the city. Kind of like Kozmo, but just for food?
MinoruMemberFor installing a new water heater we used Brennan (http://www.brennanheating.com/), and we were very happy with them — professional, fast, and reasonably priced — but I don’t know if they do what you need done.
I have heard great things about Guy Nelson from CBC Plumbing, but when I tried to hire him for something, he was too busy — perhaps a good sign.
December 27, 2007 at 9:06 am #586170Topic: Gyms and/or Personal Trainers
in forum WSB Reader RecommendationsMissKMemberHello,
As the New Year comes upon us so do the resolutions. I would like to kick start my fitness routine. I would love to find a gym or personal trainer that is in West Seattle. I belonged to All Star a few years back. I would like to get your take on the different gyms or your personal trainers. Also if you could include the cost that would be great too.
Thanks so much and Happy New Year

AdamOnAlkiParticipantI am so-far quite satisfied with the message boards. I have for some time been looking for a place to communally kvetch about the ridiculously long east/west traffic-light at California and Charleston. Now ‘the Blog’, as it is referred to be my close circle, has given me this opportunity.
Keep up the good work
rcrawleyMemberBeacon is decently priced (they don’t charge an emergency surcharge for weekend work like most of the big ones) and very professional. We’ve used them to fix an internal flooding issue, but never for upgrades or remodels.
If you’re just doing hot water heater work, you can try some of the services that specialize in water heaters, like Action, Fast, or Benla.

rcrawleyMemberKen’s Lawn Service will do both routine maintenance and specific one-off jobs. I think their recurring service is limited to just cutting the grass; I don’t know if they offer complete landscaping on a routine basis, such as continual gardening. But we’ve used them for annual pruning and clean up and they did a great job.
For larger trees, we’ve also used Davie’s Tree Service. They also did a great job trimming back one of our larger trees so that it continued to thrive after the trimming.

rcrawleyMemberWe ended up enjoying an excellent Christmas Dim Sum lunch at House of Hong, along with the rest of Seattle that wasn’t cooking at home. The ID was much busier than expected but well worth braving the other non-traditionalists and waiting on a table. :)

mlyn1375MemberCruiser – I concur with this list. Southcenter is the 9th ring of hell. I try to avoid it altogether, but yesterday we had to go there. I experience all 10 on your list, and then this one – people who walk around the mall with zero clue of the space around them!! Like the crazy lady yesterday who was tearing thru Macy’s w/ her stroller, coming right at me. Uh hello, do you even see that I exist, or is your stroller more important than me. Hey, no problem, go ahead and run over my foot…I wouldn’t want to get in your way! Arrrgghhh… Whew, got that out of my system

… and he had it done by Mendoza Landscape 206-767-4695 Noel Mendoza. I got their card as they seemwd reasonable and trimmed my apple tree for me while they were in neighborhood-

TheHouseMemberI can’t believe Coffee To A Tea isn’t mentioned at the Junction. The women that run C2AT are awesome!
I also think that Easy Street is usually overlooked and underrated. Try the MudHoney…it’s awesome and they make some of the best foam in the area!

KayleighMember90% of the Chinese food I’ve had in Seattle has been disgusting in some way–too salty, too greasy, too bland, or too weird.
I tell people now I don’t eat Chinese at all. I am too traumatized by Ho Win, New Luck Toy, etc.

dunderpMemberSue, I’m from Boston, I know what you are saying about very different chinese food here. I am glad to say I found good New York styled pastrami sandwich. The Place is called “I LOVE NEW YORK DELI.” It just opened at Pike Place Market. The owner is from the Bronx and he has everything shipped in from New York down to the wise potato chips, ring dings, and devil dogs. You can get sandwiches or by the pound. It is good. Just like back home.

AimParticipantAs someone who works at the corp. office of said coffee co, I can tell you for a FACT it’s not a marketing ploy. It happened once a couple of years ago as a fluke thing, and the story filtered up to the powers-that-be, who decided it was a good story to put on the cups for the Holidays, to inspire people to “Pass the Cheer.” Apparently its working, as we’re hearing about it from multiple stores, multiple times a day. Buying the coffee of the person behind you in line is just a nice gesture, and a way to really make someone’s day for a couple of bucks.
On a similar note, there was a man named Jerry who used to stand at the corner of 1st and Spokane every morning. I often got caught at the light, and would chat with him and give him some breakfast or a buck or two if I had it. One day I gave him a $5 coffee card I’d been given as a gift, and he got tears in his eyes. He said “every day for me is about surviving. I get a little money, I get a meal, occasionally someone gets me some new shoes. But coffee. Good coffee is a luxury, and I haven’t had it in a very long time.”
We also have a tradition in my family of buying the salvation army bellringers a hot chocolate if it’s chilly out. Just bring them one, and see the reaction.
December 24, 2007 at 4:30 am #586164Topic: change out bathtub
in forum WSB Reader RecommendationsdunderpMemberJust moved to Alaska Junction. I would like opinions on a contractor or plumber to switch out a bathtub. I also would like to know if there is a group for older Lesbians that meet in West Seattle. Thanks and Happy Holidays, Pamela

TheHouseMemberI was walking in front of Capers when a mid-30ish woman asked me for a dollar. I replied as I always do to people begging for money, “NO”. By the time I got to West 5, I turned around and asked her if she was truly hungry. She stated yes. I proceeded to take her down to West 5 and bought her their largest serving of Mac and Cheese. Merry Christmas!

LAintheJunctionParticipantOK, so it took awhile to go through the register/password/DNA test to get logged into the forum, but it sure is great to be here.
Cruiser, I feel your pain, especially #3. I call it “giving me the hey”. If I let you in, especially in thick traffic and you’re yakking on your cell phone, all I ask is that you give me the hey. A tiny little wave in the rear view mirror, it’s not much. Just an acknowledgment that somebody saw you, realized you needed a break, and gave it to you, whether you deserved it or not. If you give me the hey, all is well in the world, the cosmic karma remains in balance. And we all need that this time of year, right? So a big “hey” to all you out in WSB land.

rcrawleyMemberJust did a full Junction walk along California (not to the approval of my dog :) to check restaurant signs and basically everything is either closed or an unknown (meaning they didn’t have anything posted). I haven’t called any of the unknowns, but I’m assuming if they don’t say, they’re closed. Here’s the full list in case anyone has info on the ones w/o posted signs.<br>
- Ama Ama: Unknown
- Tom Young Kum: Closed
- Yummy Teriyaki: Closed
- Elliott Bay Brew Pub: Closed
- Talarico’s: Unknown
- Rocksport: Unknown (Forgot to check)
- Cupcake Royale: Unknown
- Jak’s: Closed
- Matador: Unknown
- Maharaja: Unknown
- Garlic Jim’s: Unknown
- Kamei: Unknown
- Lee’s Asian: Unknown
- Shadowland: Unknown
- Shoefly: Closed
- Pagliacci: Unknown (I turned south after Shoefly and forgot to check)
- Bee’s: Unknown
- Caper’s: Unknown
- Azuma: Unknown
- West 5: Closed (although open on C-Mas Eve)
- Easy Street: Closed
- Great Harvest: Closed
- Poggie’s: OPEN at 5:00 PM, but I don’t think they serve food
- Taqueria Guaymas: Unknown
- Husky Deli: Unknown (although presumed closed b/c they are for other holidays such as Easter)
- Mashiko’s: Unknown
- Puerto Vallarta: Unknown
- Bakery Nouveau: Closed
Sure, it would have been easier to just say “They’re all closed except for Poggie’s,” but you don’t realize how many restaurants we have on one street in a 2-block area until you look at each of them and try to commit them to memory. Looks like we may start a new Christmas tradition this year: Dim Sum in the ID followed by drinks at Poggie’s. :)

SueParticipantCMP, I’ve eaten at Ho-Win twice. It’s functional. Not the best, not the worst. I wouldn’t say to run there, but you could do worse.
I think my issue with chinese restaurants though is that chinese food in NYC/NJ is *very* different than chinese food here. I think I’m searching for something that doesn’t exist here, like good pastrami. So I tolerate it here and then when I’m back there I eat myself sick on it. :)
