sbre, I just wanted to say how much I admire the approach you’re taking to this. Information and compassion are a powerful combination! In case GK is still reading, I can’t resist pointing them (and anyone else who cares to know) towards this:

    https://www.tourette.org/blogs/about-tourette/debunking-myths-misconceptions/

    particularly this one:

    Myth #1:
Everyone with Tourette Syndrome (TS) blurts out obscenities.
    FACT:
While frequently portrayed in the media as a common symptom of TS, in reality the excessive and uncontrollable use of foul or obscene language, known as coprolalia, only affects 10% of individuals with TS. For those who do have coprolalia, the outbursts they experience are completely involuntary and they often try to mask the obscenities. This myth is important to rectify as it often leads to prejudices against people with TS.

This week the UN is meeting to negotiate a ban on nuclear weapons. What a great idea! The US refuses to participate. The United States led a BOYCOTT of U.N. talks on on Monday. Despite the boycott, more than 100 nations did take part, although none of the participating countries possess nuclear weapons.

Asked to explain the US boycott, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said: “You’re going to see almost 40 countries that are not in the General Assembly today. And that’s 40 countries that are saying, in this day and time, we would love to have a ban on nuclear—on nuclear weapons. But in this day and time, we can’t honestly say that we can protect our people by allowing the bad actors to have them, and those of us that are good, trying to keep peace and safety, not to have them.”

Our ambassador, Nikki Haley, says that we can’t negotiate a ban because we are ‘the good guys’ and we can’t allow the ‘bad actors to have them.’ This is ridiculous in so many ways! First, how is it that we are the good guys …. Our ambassador should brush up on her history of genocide of Native Americans, slavery, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Vietnam, contra wars in Central America, overthrow of Allende in Chili, the overthrow of Mosaddegh in Iran, and the tragedies in Afghanistan and Iraq. Furthermore, how does participating in negotiations allow bad actors to have nuclear weapons? Isn’t negotiation about keeping the bad actors from acquiring nuclear weapons? Who do you negotiate with….those you already agree with ….?

Please write your representatives and demand that the US participate in negotiating a Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty. It is unacceptable for our representative to the United Nations declare that the United States won’t even talk about a ban; it must perpetuate its nuclear arsenal. While the United States stands on the sidelines, more than 100 nations are attempting to work out a tangible pathway toward the total elimination of nuclear weapons. Without US participation the effort can’t succeed.

Moreover, the U.S. government plans to spend $1 trillion to upgrade and expand the capability of its nuclear arsenal.  This will not protect us, it will fuel a nuclear arms race among the nine nuclear nations and push non-nuclear powers to try to develop them. A nuclear arms race invites catastrophe. Perhaps there will be a nuclear accident, a sociopath will gain possession of a nuclear weapon, or nuclear weapons will be used by one or more of the nuclear powers in war. The only way to ensure that these weapons will not bring catastrophe is to work toward their total elimination. This is the way to protect our people.

West Seattle Neighbors for Peace and Justice are part of the state-wide coalition of organizations working together to promote nuclear disarmament. If not in ‘this day and time’, then when? Join us.

I highly recommend that you report this graffiti vandalism to the city; don’t assume someone else has already done so. I have had very good results reporting tags on traffic signs in my neighborhood via the online reporting system. The tags are usually removed within one to two weeks. Unfortunately, graffiti/tagging seems to be an increasingly prevalent problem.

I just learned that my youngest nephew (15) was very recently diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome, and after doing a lot of internet searching and reading to get a better understanding of this nasty affliction I’m hoping to find someone to converse with about living with someone who is afflicted.

Either emailing, on the phone or in person (the latter two being my preference) will work, I’m hoping to get a more personal education.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give.

    From Facebook
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good, because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards.
With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take, because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.
All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan, because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance – now Joe gets it too.
He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat, because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents, because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.
Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean, because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees, because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation, because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards.
Joes employer pays these standards, because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union.
If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check, because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home, because of his temporary misfortune.
Its noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC, because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan, because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.
Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world, because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards.
He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration, because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans.
The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification.
He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension, because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to.
Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.
Joe agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”

Don’t start blind drilling in walls that you don’t own! The flexible drill bits made for this require other tools and some practice to not not drill long raking grooves on the other side of a wall to say nothing about hitting other cables or pipe (hint: most drain pipes are ABS plastic and many waterlines are plastic now as well). If you’re convinced this is the way to go you can cut a chase in the sheetrock on your side and drill it out that way while retaining the removed pieces for reinstallation, taping and mudding. If it’s a condo check your CC&Rs (bylaws and rules, etc) as you may not be able to do that if it’s a demising wall. I’d recommend Wiremold for a surface installation unless you are committed to concealed.

Yes, I’m an electrician. Yes, I’ve damaged other equipment in walls using these bits and see what I said about long grooves and yes, I’ve been an electrician for a long time.

Ok folks – I’ve started to engage people here based on previous recommendations. Somewhat new to the area, and am used to either 1/3 down or 1/2 down on projects with balance on completion or at least the other 1/3 when materials and labor started showing up.

Here I’m running a real gamut from 50% down to full payment (for blinds from the same franchise that only required 50% in previous). Straw that broke the camel’s back for me is a carpet installer who insisted on all materials and 50% of the labor up front before they’d even talk date (and they were highly recommended). Somehow that came to 5300 of the 5800 for the total job.

Is this just “welcome to Seattle”? Or am I just paying for not asking / insisting on terms up front before investing my time in estimates? Seems to me that some skin in the game for timely completion is not unreasonable. Appreciate others’ experiences. Thank you!

I live in a condo complex built in 2007-2008. All parking spaces are usable.

It’s hard to imagine someone would build unusable parking spaces. Sure – some spaces are better than others. But who would pay for a parking space you couldn’t fit a car into?

I suppose it is possible apartments have different economics. I could see a scenario in which a complex is required to have, say, 15 spaces. So the builder takes the tiniest little corner and paints 15 spaces that no car could ever fit into. The parking spaces therefore don’t get rented out. The builder simply skirted the rules.

The problem, of course, is free street parking. If the city is giving away free street parking it’s really tough for a developer or builder to find someone willing to pay for a parking space. Yes – I know a reserved off-street parking spot has advantages that some are willing to pay for. But most people will opt for free street parking and are willing to put up with some inconvenience in order to save a significant amount of money. When (not if) Seattle stops giving away street parking for free we will have greater adoption of paid offstreet parking.

Some apartment parking probably goes unused because they charge extra for it. And some probably goes unused because it’s too hard to maneuver a vehicle into it. Sometimes condo owners will convert their indoor parking into storage and park on the street instead. But a lot of homeowners do the same.

they make hearing aids for that..
unfortunately.. hearing aids also amplify the background noise :(
the upside.. the noise and darkness has inspired more of us to become better cooks…
if i can do it better at home …….
or better yet.. if i can convince hubby to cook.. and to clean as he goes along….
who needs to pay big bucks for a meal out that i don’t enjoy?

Well.. If Trump and Hillary switched genders there would be some basic differences right away.

    1) Trump should be going to a Women’s prison rather than a Men’s prison.

    2) Trump would need larger handcuff’s.

    3) Hillary the man would be invited along with Bill to go out and pick up chicks together. A real boy’s club ! Bill wouldn’t have to sneak around any more.

    4) Bill wouldn’t be visiting Hillary as often in a Men’s prison because he wouldn’t be able to hit on the guards. At least not as much

    5) Oh yeah.. The picture wouldn’t have had the same impact with Hillary the ” Man ” posing with Vladimir Putin and their snazzy little ” Reset ” button. Ooop’s

Oh Yeah.. Somewhere there would be a Women’s pant suit manufacturer that would be Out of Business !

So.. Yes, there would be a few differences I see right off the bat.

Tonight around 9:30pm a young man rang our doorbell and asked if he could sleep on our couch! This has not happened to us before and it was quite surprising. We live on 98th near Arbor Heights. He said his name was Zack and was just kicked out of his house “up the street.” He said our house looked like we had extra room, and thought maybe we could take him in. He had some packed gym bags ready to move in too. Description is early 20’s, black curly hair, about 5’9” and wearing a baseball cap. Part of me wanted to invite him in and help him out, but then there are too many stories of tragedy when someone does that. So I said no, cant help you. Now, I feel really terrible that maybe he was truthful, so had to write this. Please, does anyone recognize the description of the young guy above? He may still be around (98th St near 41st).
