In reply to: A legit challenge to McDermott?
maplesyrupParticipantJoB-
I agree with the majority of McDermott’s votes. And while I am not a Democrat I vote for them almost all of the time.
However, there are a lot of McDermott’s votes that need to be questioned. Why wouldn’t you be glad to have another alternative, especially if it’s someone from the party you already vote with?
What’s surprising (maybe disappointing is a better word) is that so many people seem to be closed to debate, content to go with the flow. And I suspect that it’s because the guy we already have is a Democratic incumbent.
Worse, people like Johnson dismissing a challenger as a “wingnut” and “crazee” without even hearing the debate demonstrate intellectual laziness and narrow mindedness. Asking him if he has a personal interest in the McDermott camp actually gives him the benefit of the doubt because I could have simply called him those things outright. But I don’t know him so I didn’t.
You say McDermott’s track record is decent. And when I review his voting record I see a lot of things that make me say, “ok, that was a good vote.” But there are also a lot of things that piss me off. I am not necessarily convinced he is doing a good job for me or the country.
For those reasons I wish people would at least be open to the debate. If after the debate you decide McDermott is your guy, great. Just don’t be sheep.

flowerpetalMemberNot that its very relevant; as this guy is a jerk and a law breaker. But he clearly does, in your video, get out and walk back to the other car for a visual inspection after briefly looking at his own damage. His passenger spends more time looking than he does. Am I misinterpreting the video? Doesn’t he walk back to view the other car? I hope he is caught.
BTW, I am still carrying in my wallet the identifying information invovling a green Land Rover involved in a hit and run and posted here. Does anyone know if that investigation has ended?

JoBParticipantmaplesyrup..
i don’t work for McDermott.. i don’t even like the man much. He hasn’t been responsive when i have written to him.
but i don’t have to like him to admire his commitment to West Seattle…
and i don’t have to be on his payroll to find reason in Johnson’s argument.
And… I don’t see anything in anyone else who is out there that would convince me they would do a better job.
One of the unfortunate side effects of outsourcing has been the loss of knowledge in those companies whose efficiency experts thought they could do the job as well.. or nearly as well.. for less… but didn’t know what the job was and outsized what turned out to be key positions to people who didn’t understand the issues any better than the efficiency experts.
Why would you replace legislator with a decent track record who knows how to get his job done for you with someone who doesn’t have a clue but has a lot of good ideas?
your comment about McDermott underscores why we need someone who knows what they are doing and can make a difference when and where it really counts…
“Omitting “under God” was one of the best things McDermott ever did. Too bad he let Pelosi whip him back in line so fast. “

let’s see.. their bad business decisions nearly bankrupted them.. we loaned them money, let them shed their bad loans and dump all of those losses on their stakeholders (yup.. those were our retirement funds)… and 5% annualized for the government is a good deal for us?
We personally took a 40% hit on captive investments (retirement funds controlled by managers we didn’t get to choose who made investment decisions with our money based on fraudulent information)…
i am not so impressed with their “returns” or with the bonuses they were awarded for fleecing us.
Just as i will bet those who are stuck with houses they can’t sell at any price are not so pleased with the outcome of all this “normalization”…
but hey.. the banks are loaning on high end properties again so all those who are now getting bonuses for increasing their companies bottom line at everyone else’s expense can buy the home of their dreams:)))
ain’t life grand?
July 15, 2009 at 10:48 pm #671892In reply to: Heat Pump VS. Natural Gas
LSParticipantHi Ashley, I’m also investigating this option.
I think one of the questions is whether you already have gas service to your house or not. Connecting the gas line isn’t always costly, depending on what appliances you convert to gas within a year of the gas meter being connected. In my case, with the appliances I’ll be connecting, it won’t cost me anything to get the gas line connected…so I might go with a gas furnace and skip the heat pump.
Also, from what I’ve seen, the heat pumps are quite large units. Depending on how much yard space you have, then that might be a consideration as well.
Good luck!

cjboffoliParticipantJanS: It seems a reasonable assumption that there are more people living on the streets now because of the economy. But I wonder if that is really true. Has anyone looked at this statistic? I feel like I saw plenty of campers randomly scattered on the streets of Seattle long before the economy collapsed.
I wish I had a solution to this issue. Lots of people who are much smarter than me and who are experts in the topic homelessness are hard pressed to come up with a solution that offers a lasting remedy to the issue. But just because I don’t have a solution doesn’t mean that I don’t have a right to articulate my (apparently unpopular) opinion here.
If you talk to the police I expect they’d tell you that a significant percentage of the transient population we’re talking about is comprised of people with criminal histories and who are involved in local larcenies and other crime. I’d love to think that if I give money to a homeless person at an intersection that they’d use it to buy food. But I wonder what percentage of that money goes to feeding an addiction that leaves them worse than they were without it.
How many “car residers” to you think there are in West Seattle? Are they content to be living in their cars? Would they agree that that is the best solution for them right now? Would homeless advocates agree? I would totally support (both in spirit and with my wallet) campgrounds with services like free access to clean running water and toilets if that would make things more comfortable for people who are living out of their cars. It seems a much more sensible use of money than wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars on a failed system of automated toilets.
I support a number of charities every year but I can’t say that any of them are geared directly toward eradicating the problem of homelessness. Everyone seems super-concerned in this Forum thread but I wonder what percentage of posters here give significant financial support or volunteer time to services designed to help the homeless. Surely something more can be done than simply advocating for their right to live in a school bus in the alley.
I think technically it is not illegal to sleep in your car on the street in Seattle as long as you move it every 72 hours. Then again, it IS illegal to camp on City property as evidenced by the way the City has been handing the Nickelsville settlement.
Actually, maybe this is an issue worthy of an official WSB article. I wonder if any of these people would be willing to tell their sides of the story.
Filmmaker David Lynch has recently been producing a 20,000 mile, 70 day road trip back and forth across the US conducting ad hoc interviews of random people (some of whom are transients or otherwise on the fringes of society) and the stories are fascinating:

bluebirdMemberBugmasters totally ripped me off. Several years ago took in an actual VW bug. Easiest car in the world to work on. Needed a few things done. They had it for several days, and charged me hundreds of dollars. When they finally told me it was ready and I was paying the bill, I asked them to explain everything they’d done. “Oh, we just attached the muffler. We couldn’t get to the other stuff.” A $50 dollar muffler and a couple of clamps. Hundreds of dollars and three days. God knows what they’d charge today. It was total BS.
And yes I told them so and that I’d never be back, and would be happy to share my experience. They didn’t care. They had a line of cars waiting that were more important than an old bug.
Sorry JenV. They may have been good guys to you, but not to their customers.

charlabobParticipantThank you Full Tilt!
Christopher, who gets to decide what the cases are when people “deserve” a safety net? Do you? Do I? It’s gotta be one of us, because you certainly can’t speak for me, nor I for you.
That’s actually the point of a safety net. In those horrible scary Scandinavian countries, people pay more in taxes and EVERYONE has a floor under which they cannot fall. BTW, the cost of those higher taxes is less than Americans(sic) pay for our “ad hoc” method.
The good thing about a true safety net is I don’t have to worry about the deserving versus underserving poor. I can just loathe everyone who doesn’t live up to my standards or whose appearance or lifestyle inconveniences me or who pays too much or too little for bacon without having to feel guilty about it. And, yes, my final paragraph was sardonic sarcasm.

July 13, 2009 at 5:13 pm #671821JustSarahParticipantcharlabob – I was wondering the same thing about the phone booth, but they did show a picture of it on the KONG 10:00 p.m. news last night. Turns out it’s actually just a few blocks from where I live – the new curb cut put in on the west side of California between Beveridge Place and Graham (same block as the Short Stop convenience store). I’m going to have to check it out in person, but it was a fairly ridiculous looking photo on the news.
And I’ve seen the crooked curb. I’ve also definitely seen curb cuts that would appear to funnel wheelchair users/stroller pushers right out into the street, rather than the crosswalk.
You are certainly right that we, the citizens of Seattle, should really scrutinize our news and question the questionable; however, I see a lot of truth in this story, and little motivation for the reporter to embellish.
July 13, 2009 at 4:58 pm #671820charlabobParticipantI am not defending the department, the director, the mayor or anyone else. But I strongly suggest someone do a little research on these cases to make sure they exist. Ever since I read the indictment of the major for “keeping his street plowed” (which I know he didn’t do, because I live on the same street, four blocks away), I’ve been a little leery of conventional wisdom.
We’re now a one NEWSpaper town, not counting all the blogs, which means sloppy research and sloppy resporting can go unnoticed.
It would be helpful if someone posted a few addresses of the defective WC ramps; I’d especially like to see the one that runs into a phone booth, because I’d like a picture of one of the last remaining phone booths in the world :-)

Anyway, best “cure” for jet lag, in my opinion, is sleep. Or no sleep. When my husband flew back from Tokyo he was awake for 36 hours straight (including his layover in Vancouver, B.C.) Then he just slept extra well the night he came back, and was back to normal fairly quickly! No Viagra involved.
July 10, 2009 at 7:26 pm #671723In reply to: Dogs and the Street Festival
miwsParticipantthe_urbanite, just because a person feels certain venues are inappropriate for people to bring non-sevice dogs, doesn’t make them a “dog hater”. That’s an old, well worn out accusation in my opinion, that always seems to come up in any thread regarding dogs.
One might note, in the various dog threads, that actual dog owners that have a different opinion than the “accuser” are blindly lumped into the dog hater group.
Regarding the Junction Festival, or any event that invites a huge crowd into a relatively small area, the concern of many, including myself, is not only for the safety and comfort of the people, including many excited children, but for the dog as well.
There will be lots of stimulation there, between all of the kids being excited, as I mentioned above, but also from the various food booths around putting out their smells, little kids walking around holding their corndogs, ice cream cones, and such, at head level of many larger sized dogs.
For the record, I haven’t owned a dog in many years. I can’t currently, due to living in an apartment that doesn’t allow pets. Plus, I’m not in the financial situation to give a pet the care it needs and so richly desreves. I am a huge animal lover, and enjoy interacting with them immensely.
As far a you wanting to walk your dog in your neighborhood, there are 362 days out of the year that the Fair is not running, (363 on leap years!) that you can walk your dog through the Junction. And, there are some great residential parts to your neighborhood for dog walking, within a radius of the Junction.

Probably fairly short but hey, we gotta represent. Should be around 12:30 pm today during “The Conversation” – there is a guest host subbing for Ross Reynolds this week and I am told said host (the station’s news director) is a West Seattleite. Meantime, hope to see everybody at West Seattle Summer Fest, where we’re in the Junction/Chamber/Info/Junction Plaza Park big tent right at California/Alaska. Looks like today we’re on the WEST side of the tent, which might change for tomorrow/Sunday. Please set aside a couple minutes to take a quick Summer Fest survey (on a laptop) while you visit, and you’ll be entered into a drawing for a $100 Junction shopping spree. (The survey is on behalf of the Junction Association but we’re helping with it = everybody in the main tent has an extra duty to help with, like the West Seattle Chamber folks handling official information, lost-kid reports, etc.)

Please leave your dogs at home this weekend when you go to the street festival. Thursday night it wasn’t very crowded and people had their dogs out. There were children all around and I saw two little girls almost bitten by a dog that got nervous with their yelling and running around.
So that is my comment bring on the snarky comments about being able to bring your dogs any where you want.
July 10, 2009 at 2:32 am #671676In reply to: Parking meters in West Seattle?
MerylAlcMemberHello all,
I’m Meryl Alcabes and I own a business in the Junction, Sleepers In Seattle. I think what angers many of the business owners is that the City of Seattle claims to want our opinion and invites our input, and then does whatever seems convenient to them, which is apparently what happened in Fremont.
The business owners and property owners in the Junction have said, time and time again, that we do not want paid parking in the Junction. Who does it benefit? Not us! It only takes one parking fine to convince a customer to head for Tukwila to shop next time. When there were meters in the Junction, over a decade ago, we had the experience of a customer spending more time than they anticipated shopping for furniture. All of a sudden they realized that they risked a fine–so they ran out of the store, found a ticket on the windshield, and left in anger. At the least, one has to cough up exact change, or a credit-card charge. At the worst, the customer gets a parking fine and doesn’t return.
We now have limited parking (2 hours) in the Junction, which is enforced by the City of Seattle–the beneficiary of any fines collected. I have spoken with several other Junction business owners today and our feeling is unanimous–don’t allow the City of Seattle to attempt to balance their budget on the backs of our customers!
If there is enough interest, I am willing to circulate a petition. You can reach me at:
meryl@sleepersinseattle.com if you think that is a good idea. I hope to hear from many of you!

WSBKeymasterJust so you all know, the Times story is nothing new at all – nothing in this story (which I read last night) is news. This study has been under way for a year and we have covered it here extensively – it’s a case of a citywide media source deciding to jump into something happening in a neighborhood.
So if you want to read the actual details about what’s been happening, since we first reported this was proposed in February 2008:
https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=5885
… please check the Junction parking review coverage category (where the 19 WSB articles on the subject are archived, newest to oldest):
https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?cat=92
They have had meetings, tours, requests for public involvement, ALL of which have been reported here, with previews and followup articles. If you have missed those somehow and have not provided your feedback, Dante Taylor, manager of the Junction review, can be reached at:
And if you are interested in the topic, bookmark that coverage category (or find it from the CATEGORIES list in the lower sidebar) because anything additional we publish on this – next thing I expect is when the study data is made public – will appear there, in addition of course to being new on the main page when it’s published. Thank you.

HomerParticipantYes, the motion sensor hose sprayer is great, expensive though and watch out if YOU forget it’s rigged up! I’ve been “hosed down” many a times!
What’s wrong with trapping these cats and bringing them to the pound? They are not “entitled” to roam the neighborhood, just as dogs are not. If I were to lurk in some random persons backyard, I would be cited for trespassing, why not a cat? If the owners don’t care enough to keep them indoors or buy an invisible fence, why should bird lovers or cat allergy sufferers have to suffer? If there’s a dog endangering my child by being in our backyard, or a person lurking there, I’d call the police so a trap is the next best thing. If you love your pets and you neighbors, keep your cats in your house or in a “dog run” with a full cage that allows them a good deal of room to roam but not jump out or get out of the yard.

WSBKeymasterI don’t know if the first post came before or after we published our first update on the main page … we were at the 34th District marathon when the first call came in from someone, and I paged Seattle Public Utilities’ media rep to confirm (a) there WAS a break and (b) its location – Christopher was able to go report from the scene for us so that we didn’t have to bust out of the 34th before they got to the main event, the mayoral endorsement.
If anyone is still waterless by morning, PLEASE let us know, either e-mail or phone (see upper right corner). https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=18585
Whoever it was who called us, THANK YOU (Patrick didn’t catch the name, it was VERY loud in The Hall at Fauntleroy) … this is the kind of thing that doesn’t turn up on 911 (the Fire Dept. eventually got involved but not till much later) so without tips, unless it’s happening at our house too (we checked – no), we won’t be able to check on it!
