again, for people who don’t understand – here is the SPD website clearly stating their mission statement – which includes “preventing crime”

    http://www.cityofseattle.net/Police/

While I agree you need to be vigilant in protecting yourself and being aware of your surroundings – part of what the police do is protect you…or they should. (when not trying to run you over in a marked crosswalk..ha ha)

It’s usually the people like Vincent and NR that will squeal the loudest when something like this happens to them, though. Funny, that.

I have ranted about this one before, but last night really took the cake. This has got to be the most poorly lit crosswalks in Seattle. Last night, we’re headed to the yarn store. Waiting for traffic to clear so we can cross – about a block away I see a police car approaching. Logically thinking he’s going to stop when he sees pedestrians in the crosswalk, we start across. HE DOESN’T STOP. He finally did stop when he was about on top of us. I yelled at him- I said you’re a freaking COP- how can you not stop for pedestrians????! He said he didn’t see us. Unbelievable.

Who do I call, what can I do about this intersection? Even in broad daylight people get rear-ended here all the time when they stop for peds. You really take your life in your hands at this one. There are no flags, no lights at all.

We had a big boy who really didn’t like getting his nails done either, so we’d wrap him in a towel (a la James Herriot, if you ever read the “All Creatures” books) and just extract one paw at a time to do the job. He didn’t much like that either, but at least when he was well wrapped he couldn’t express his displeasure with the other three feet!

If he’s an indoor cat, you might consider claw caps instead of nail trimming, they might be easier to apply?

    #649642

that cant be true because when he stole the hunting the knives the police said that they could not do anything even though we told them where he was and that he is a convicted felon, he was the one who beat up that poor gas station attendant last summer and at that time the man was lucky he wasnt armed when the voices told him to attack the guy. he will be in jail again, he has been in and out of jail for the past 12 years only staying out for maybe a month the longest before he gets put back in, each time his actions are getting more and more violent and the police yes they do there job as in capturing him in about 5 minutes after he has attacked someone, but his actions are getting more and more violent. so i feel the system is not only failing us it is failing him. And never have i asked for personal body guards. i ask for justice to be served.

Sue: This is very easy to do. I used to do it all the time when I had a Maine Coon. I think the trick is getting to them when they are in full-on nap mode and generally too tired to fight. I used a regular pair of small human nail clippers that were used just for the cat.

You simply place the paw in the palm of your hand, pad side down, and use your thumb to gently draw the skin back and expose the claws. The trick is just to remove the very point of the claw. You don’t want to cut into the “quick” at the center. The claws are clear so it is generally very easy to see that inner portion of claw that you don’t want to cut. If you do cut it the claw could bleed and potentially get infected. But that’s worst case scenario. I found that holding the clipper vertically in relation to the paw produced a clean cut and prevented the claws from splintering.

    Good luck.

Why don’t you all do a soup swap in January. I think National Soup Swap Day is January 24th. I think.

We’ve got at 15 pound Maine Coon cat who doesn’t particularly like his nails cut. He can make it very difficult, and he doesn’t “play well with others” (animals). I don’t dare do it because I’ve never done it, am afraid to hurt him, and upset cat and fearful owner is not a good combination to not end up with a blood transfusion. :)

We were taking him to our vet for nail cutting, but last time they said that they were unable to finish (left him with 2 nails uncut) and that they refused to do it again unless we sedated him because it was “too dangerous.” Since they whisk him away to a back room I have no idea what happened, and was a little surprised that a group of professionals couldn’t handle our guy, even after my husband offered to come back and hold him down (they refused). (When we lived in Lynnwood we just took him to PetSmart grooming, and we’d hold him while they did it – he growled and flailed, but wasn’t what I’d consider “dangerous” to anybody. Unhappy, yes, and you risked a scratch, but not dangerous.)

So I’m wondering if anybody knows of anyone who will come to my house and cut this guy’s nails? He’s getting caught on the rug and I need to do something, and I’m not sure where to go. I need to call the vet and talk to their office manager about this situation, as I refuse to risk anesthesia on him to cut his nails every 2 months.

    Any suggestions?

Duke’s non-standard chowders (there’s one with bourbon and corn, exact name escaping me).

Tomato basil at Easy Street and West 5.

    Miso soup at Azuma Sushi.

Pho at Pho 54 just across the city-limits line on the north edge of White Center (16th/Roxbury). We only got around to trying pho for the first time a couple months ago. Reminiscent of Hawaii’s trademark saimin, only vastly more savory. And the lighter rice noodles are a nice touch.

Haven’t been there for a while (and it’s still for sale) but Angelina’s Trattoria always had excellent chunky minestrone.

The problem is voting. Nothing gets finished if we vote. Two examples are the Viaduct and the last Monorail.

What we need is a West Seattle Sugar Daddy like Paul Allen.

Have you jumped on the S.L.U.T.? (South Lake Union Trolley) I didn’t vote on it (that I am aware of) and it was built.

If you build it, they will ride!!!

PS – Although I have always liked the idea of a monorail going downtown, I have to ask. How are we gonna pay for it? Can we tax the hot air all these local politicians expel? As a home owner i must admit I am a bit wary. My property taxes just keep going up. HMMMMMM.

In reply to: Great Cat Name!

Kids are so creative with names sometimes. I love the innocence. A little boy (about 4 or 5 years old) I used to raise (in a previous relationship) wanted to name our new kitten.

It was a very serious moment. I remembering him ask if the kitty was going to live with us. His mother said Yes. He then asked if it was a boy kitty or a girl kitty. She said a boy kitty. Then her son asked what a boy kitty cat was called and she said a tomcat. Then he asked if the cat was going to be his brother. She said, I guess he will be. Then the little boy said. I want to call him Brother Tom.

We loved the name and it stuck.

Since the little boy’s mom worked at O’Dea High School at the time the Priests really liked the name too. After almost 15 years my old warrior is still fairly spry. Veterinarians fear him but for everyone else he is a lover with the strange meow.

I have to agree with vincent on this. The police “enforce” the LAW. Meaning – when the law is broken, they take action/intervene.

Expecting the police to be personal body guards is unrealistic.

As far as this individual representing himself during trial, well, that’s his RIGHT. Everyone has the right to represent them self in court. Is that the smartest thing to do? No, not usually.

We have had a lot of adopted kitties in my life so they all have been named kitty. Mom’s reasoning is that the cat had another name when they lived with that family and we don’t want to confuse the poor cat any more. But we did name one cat we named it Sarah and Sarah went under the couch one day and came out a Sam. So after that it was kitty. Little big Kitty; Big Little Kitty; Male Kitty; dumb kitty. LOL

I’ve been very unhappy with 3 different stylists I’ve had in the area since moving to Seattle (not at Illusions). I’ve been ending up with either a mullet or a large amount of hair in my face with no style whatsoever that resembled the coat of a shaggy dog. :) And this is not for lack of trying – bringing photos of what I used to look like, giving stylists several chances to fix it, to no avail.

I decided to try out WSB’s sponsor, Illusions, because I had nothing to lose – I was getting ready to shave my head in disgust. :)

I saw Amy last night at Illusions and she actually listened to me, understood what I asked for (and what the picture showed), walked me through (verbally) what she would do and proceeded to cut my hair exactly as I wanted! She told me I could come back in a few days if something was wrong, and she’d fix it at no charge, but that looks unlikely that I’ll need to. I was thrilled at how professional she was, how she actually listened, and asked for my input on what she was doing. I am happy with my hair again and actually got complimented on the style at work today, which hasn’t happened in a very long time. It was worth paying a little more for my haircut to actually be happy with it!

Did you mean to say that his e-mail address was spelled somewhat inverted from his name? Just wondering. Maybe his first name is “Ulysses”.

I have had similar Quid experience as a Mac user–as if they weren’t computers (granted 6 years ago, but enough to prevent me from using them twice).

    Pam,

Thank you, and I’ll follow up with Katie. You never know.

    Bonnie,

I am looking for someone who comes to the home, as my son’s ABA therapy and the fact I have a second child precludes me from driving to and fro, ad nauseum. I know of others (in other neighborhoods) who have speech come to their home. Am hoping WS will afford the same.

BTW, have you checked out my post in the ‘Open Discussions’ section entitled ‘Impacted by Autism’? If you haven’t written (or preferrably called), please do! Could you spread the word to others in your AH program? We need to inundate Eileen. I’d be happy to chat with you. PM if you’re interested.

Ditto the Tomato Basil at Met Market and I nominate the sublime Tom Kah soup at Buddha Ruksa. Fresh herbs, sliced ginger and lemongrass in a chili infused coconut milk broth.

I think we should have done it; I still think we should do it. Of course, now that the opponents have had their way, it’ll be way more expensive. But it’s the cheapest way I can think of to get a grade-separated (that is, dependable), carbon-responsible transit system. So, is this the 6th vote?

What might have been….I’m still angry and still sad about that last vote and the absurd misrepresenation of costs that the opponents used to kill it.

We could have been riding it all last year–and planning an expansion now with money from a more transit friendly administration.

I believe that the light rail, when it opens next year, will have people all over the city realizing what real city transit could be.

But, lowmanbeach, I think West Seattle will be lucky if our grandchildren get something other than buses stuck in traffic to get out of West Seattle.

    :(

I had been a regular customer over at Quid’nunc Computer repair down at the Junction until I had the worst customer service experience in recent memory, not to mention the fact that they never fixed the problem and took over two weeks to fix when they originally told me two DAYS. When I called to inquire about the whereabouts of my computer, the person actually hung up on me!

Anyway, I still had the awful computer virus on my machine after my experience at Quid’nunc and I really wanted my laptop to work properly! A friend of mine mentioned Julius Sommer (ujsommer@gmail.com) here in West Seattle as someone to look into. I emailed him, we arranged a time, he quickly diagnosed the problem, he FIXED the problem, and went into great detail with me as to what had happened and how I could prevent this from happening in the future. An overall GREAT experience — and, now almost a week out, he actually emailed me to follow-up and make certain everything was still working OK. Great, great experience and I will continue to take my computer to him to repair!
