WSMomParticipantHey there Lattemom:
Reading this thread made for an interesting morning. I’d like to suggest that you re-read what you have written and consider the “tone” of your voice. Your first message did sound to me like you were proud of the fact that you got the disturbed man “fired on the spot”! Perhaps that wasn’t your intended message, but your later writings dug the hole you started yet deeper. Loosing a job is huge; no insurance, can’t pay the bills…it’s something we universally worry about. I’m sure you generally feel compassion for the person experiencing this, it just didn’t come through in your writing.

Of course we can and sometimes will be swayed in our thinking by what we hear, read, see. But individually we all have to run this information through our own contextual filters to see if it’s something we want to influence our lives. Just because so and so says I must believe such and such doesn’t necessarily mean I will. I’m quite skeptical by nature and will want to do my own due diligence. It doesn’t mean that what the other person told me is wrong, I just haven’t bought into it yet. I guess that’s why we love having discourse on this forum…lol.

swimcatMemberNope, I never had a problem. I paid rent on time, never complained and kept a clean apartment. Landlord’s thought I was the cat’s meow- there are some crappy tenants out there (my husband owns a rental property so I know) that do much worse things than bring a well-behaved, litter box using cat into an apartment… Now, if I had a boy cat that sprayed, well, let’s just say that cat would not be moving anywhere with me if it had those problems. I would not want to live with that stink, much less ruin someone else’s property with it.

BonnieParticipantWell, I don’t believe people should be using that kind of language, especially around children (but it sounds like no children were there???) but I wouldn’t feel good about getting somebody fired. You don’t know what is going on in his life.
I just can’t believe that they would fire someone ON THE SPOT like that. Maybe he was a problem worker…we don’t know.
January 18, 2008 at 3:49 pm #614040In reply to: Sidewalk Worker Fired For Using Foul Langauage……
KayleighMemberLattemom, I “get it”; I just disagree with you. I don’t care how bad his language was.
Now someone is standing on the unemployement line, without the medical insurance he likely needs to seek help for what may be anger management issues or a chemical imbalance.
How about teaching children to control themselves and not others? That will serve them better than freaking out over the “f” word.

cruiserMemberGood morning Lattemom,
Have you calmed down yet? With all the shouting you were doing on this forum last night, I’m worried about you:) I hope you’ve had your morning latte and are relaxed so you can go about your wonderful life.
Acemotel, correct on the firing thing no doubt:)
ps Lattemom maybe you could go back and edit out the offending words as this forum is open to all including children…or do I need to report you to WSB and get you fired!

KenParticipantba-dump bump
The last day to change your voter info or registration via the web page is tomorrow, the 19th before the primary.
For the caucus, you just have to be registered somewhere and show an id, or utility bill or one of the usual formes of ID to sign in.
If the PCO knows you are a resident they can allow you to sign in but you need to make sure your voter registration matches your current address asap.
Reminder: The caucus is the only place to make your preference known on the Democrats running for President. No Dem delegates will be awarded in the primary. The caucus is paid for and organized by the parties and is therefore not mentioned by the King Co elections division on it’s web site. See above post for links.
Washington Democratic precinct caucus, Saturday, Feb 9th at 1 pm. It should last about 2 hours. Snacks and coffee available. :)

credmondParticipantI’m in awe of lattemom’s ability to command authority and act. Irrespective of one’s opinion of the merit of the phone call, lattemom showed that active, involved, citizens can and do get the attention of the city. That’s a really good thing and a really good thing to know. Take heed, call in if something seems not right. I do. I’m also of the “heard more bad stuff than that before” so usually that kind of foul language goes in and out the same ear. Agree that the guy in question seemed to be having some severe electrical storms inside his head. That’s both sad and worrisome on so many levels. And, I’m a real fan of Ken’s standard of ethics. Reminds me of that French standard – Liberté, Fraternité, Egality. Anyway, a really rousing discourse. Also, in lattemom’s defense, the south end of West Seattle can be and is somewhat of a freezone. This was a bit too “wild west” for a family neighborhood.

AnonymousInactiveCruiser: I have a wonderful and fun life, thank you very much! I am a Stay At Home Mom, volunteer at an area hospital, run a business here at home that is very success, enjoy watching our kids grow up. I am very lucky to be able to stay at home with our children, my husband has a geat job and is gerat at what he does. I get on this board in between errands and shopping for groceries and the such. I am also very involved at our school. I also involve our children working at area food banks. I have a very full life. I have already worked for over 25 years in a very corporate office. We also travel when ever we can and make a point at visiting areas that we can assist Habitat for Humanity projects, so we do give back to the community.
JasonParkerParticipantWe hired Joe The Plumber (206-285-2434) based on advice in an earlier posting (Thanks, JT!). What a great find! Joe fixed a shower valve that I had taken apart and couldn’t replace (doh!). He was very nice, researched it online during the evening at no charge, and fixed the problem. He charged us only half the time he was on site because he couldn’t fix it right away. Now that’s integrity! Joe is very fair, communicates well (not something you always find in your plumbers), pleasant and affordable. Highly recommended!

CMPParticipantDang, what an interesting string! Maybe the guy has Turret’s (sp?) syndrome and can’t control it? I’ve heard plenty of swearing in the corporate world and am not in the least offended by it. I will say it sounds like this guy went above and beyond, but it was no reason to make a phone call with the resulting firing of him. Maybe it was the straw that broke the camel’s back though. I guarantee you this “jerk” would have a few choice words for lattemom if he found out the catalyst for his firing! And heaven forbid you’re driving next to me any day with my windows rolled down…you’d hear a lot worse coming out of my mouth compared to that construction worker with the crappy driving around here!

No that’s not what I said. If I listen to heavy metal music I’m not then going to go out and kill people…that’s more my point. I can choose how to react. Whereas others that never learned how to modulate their feelings might go out and kill after hearing those lyrics. I know I have a choice in how I’m going to act.

CMPParticipantAre there any restaurants catering to single people who have no one celebrate this lame holiday with? I plan on finding the least romantic place in town to have a few beverages…any suggestions for that?!
And Dustin, I say there’s nothing better than a fantastic home-cooked meal in the comfort of your home. Unless you’re a bad cook :) Otherwise, Ama Ama would be nice with some oysters and I hear their bar is great…LOL!

CMPParticipantMy LL told me that I couldn’t have pets, but he’s not on-site so I cat-sat for 1 1/2 years with no problems. Have even had dogs at my place for several days with no problems. I guess it depends on the landlord. If someone disliked cats that much, then I’ll assume they’re very pro-dog which is unfortunate!

cruiserMemberWow!
Lattemom I take it so that you’ve never used a swear word within hearing distance of another human? Be honest now.
I don’t think anyone has condoned what happened, but you’re an adult and he’s an adult and there were no kids around correct? Sure sounds like the guy was having a bad day but sure we’ve all had one of those,eh?
I’m curious, do you feel he deserved to loose his job? You say you didn’t make that decision and that’e true but do you think people should get fired because they lost it a bit?
Anyway I wish you well and am somewhat jealous of you if this is all you gotta be worried about:)Maybe you should drop the latte’s and while you’re at it get a life?
January 18, 2008 at 4:00 am #614016In reply to: Sidewalk Worker Fired For Using Foul Langauage……
KayleighMemberYes, I have worked in corporate offices. I have heard very important people swear, and it didn’t phase me.
Not everyone is as reactive and controlling about bad words as you were with this now unemployed stranger. Strangers owe you nothing.
I can’t believe this thread.

KayleighMemberOMG, if I’d gotten fired every time I swore at work, I’d have been unemployed 100 times. I could care less when other people swear and I swear when I feel like it.
There weren’t any kids around, and even if there were, is it so hard to talk to your kid if she hears bad words? Say something like, ‘That guy is probably having a very bad day….I don’t like the way he’s talking…we try to find nicer words to express ourselves, don’t we?’

ErikParticipantWes –
In short, swearing or any other anti-social behaviour that children witness from adults (other than their parents or those they reside with) don’t necessarily have a detrimental affect on them. It all falls back on the limbic relationships the child forms while in their first 5 years of growth. The most important teachers of course are their parents. If the parents do a good job of providing a safe place for the child to explore and nurture their organic learning then they’ll have a strong basis to deal with the outside world. Usually better than the adults they are with, because they’re still in a learning mode. Children are quite adaptable to their environments, just ask all the kids from war-torn areas of the world. As long as they have strong family relationships they’ll learn how to deal with the world as a whole. Adults on the other hand for the most part stopped learning a long time ago and base most of their actions/reactions on the child they once were.
Listening to types of music or reading certain books aren’t going to turn a person into a decadent, killing, swearing machine unless they were already headed that way…again this falls back on the lack of a solid limbic relationship while growing up.
As for the guy learning something, he may have, but I doubt it’s what you wish him to learn. He most likely reverted back to a childhood memory of when he was first chastised for doing wrong and became attuned to his feeling of not being accepted.
As far as changing habits goes, the most efficient means is through observation of one’s movement when you are doing the behaviour (not by thinking). I know this is contrary to what most people think and spout. The reason trying to change one’s thinking is so hard is that you can’t easily measure change in it.
Before you feel compelled to respond I ask that you notice what happens to your breathing or where you feel the tension building. As humans we have the ability to act, to observe the act, and to refine the action. This is also called maturity.

AnonymousInactiveFound this article online:
Do you have to update your Canadian Citizenship photo?
I currently live about 15 minutes away from Detroit, Michigan, and if I traveled there from my city in Canada, it would be by land.
I was told by Passport Canada that Canadians do not require passports to enter the US by land (until 2008), but if you travel by air, you would need to have your passport. Since my Canadian passport expired in April 2007, I’ll have to resort to using my Canadian Citizenship card to cross the border.
The problem is, the photo taken of myself is from when I was 9-10 years old. I’m now 22 years old. I’ve had no problems in the past few years going to the States with just my Citizenship card, but one immigration officer said my photo was too outdated, even though I had other valid photo ID to prove that was me.
My question is this: Do you have to update your Canadian Citizenship photo? And can they deny you entry because you look too young in just the Citizenship card photo? And how can I obtain an updated Citizenship card? Thanks so much

Kingstonsean: The cizitizenship card is not a travel document, but from now until 2008, all you need to travel from canada to the US is proof of your citizenship and govt issued photo id, such as a drivers license…so until 2008, you don’t need a passport if traveling by land and sea.
squareeyesParticipantThere’s a brief article about Seattle West Inn & Suites in the West Seattle Herald: http://www.westseattleherald.com/articles/2008/01/17/news/local_news/news01.txt
It doesn’t sound like they’ve done any upgrading yet, just separated their association with Travelodge. You might want to give them a call and ask if you can inspect a couple of rooms before you recommend them to visitors. I can’t imagine them saying no. If they do, that’s your answer.
