Why didn’t they develop the Duwamish, does anyone know? My guess would be the tribal rights.

They needed to make it high enough 165ft(?) for ships to be able to clear it so there would be non-drawbridge access in and out of West Seattle. The big complaint, even when both drawbridges were functioning, was the frequent openings including during rush hour. Trains crossing at the east end of the bridges was another issue. It wasn’t too rare of an occurrence to finally start across the eastbound span after a ten-minute bridge opening, only to have a train come through on the other side.

I’m confused too. From what I’ve read no where on the billboard is the word “cougar” so I’M guessING that the OP is assuming because one of the women is from the 50’s which would make her 68+ in age so she’s a cougar in “her” mind???.
Anyways isn’t the definition of a “cougar” an older female that goes after a younger male…is there a young male on the billboard getting his butt pinched or something? LOL!!!

I seem to recall that traffic could get pretty backed up during peak hours. For some reason, I can picture afternoon westbound peak in my mind more clearly than morning eastbound.

But, today, a similar back up would be normal. ;-)

Mike. You could be right as far as timing. As good as I am 40 years does induce a bit of fog as to timing. A sign of the times is that while they routed us onto the other bridge to get in and out of WS I don’t remember traffic being a big issue. Ah…the good old day’s….

Why keep driving across the bridge to work in 2018 when you can join a company that has great projects in West Seattle?
Ventana Construction is hiring journey-level carpenters and bags-on lead carpenters for our remodeling and custom home projects. We offer competitive wages and full benefits: a generous PTO program, 401k and company-subsidized medical/dental/vision. All but one of our projects for next year is in West Seattle, and that means less time on the road and less wear and tear on your truck.
We are looking for skilled carpenters with a strong background in remodeling and a mix of rough and finish experience. Carpenters should have a minimum of 3 years’ experience and leads at least 7 years, with at least 2 years in a lead position.
An eye for detail and a high level of skill are extremely important. Our clients expect a high level of craftsmanship, professionalism and consideration while working their homes.
We have a no smoking/tobacco policy on all our job sites.
Please submit your resume to ‘ventanaresumes@gmail.com’ for consideration. A background check is required as part of our interview process.

Jonathan Baldivino at Roofscapes NW in Burien (http://roofscapes-nw.com) did a great job on my roof. (Didn’t do gutters so I don’t know about that part.)

I didn’t really register the bridge being stuck until later in the week. Mr Gaston, my driver’s ed (vehicle) teacher said we would wait a week for the bridge to be fixed before driving on I-5. Instead we practiced parallel parking in the Hancock Fabric parking lot to the point of car sickness for me.

Spoiler alert. The bridge wasn’t fixed the next week.

I pass this billboard on my way home from work. It consists of two pictures side by side. On the left is an attractive older woman with a sassy expression making “cat claws” with her hands. On the right is a fifties era fighter jet, presumably one on display at the Museum of Flight. Underneath are two captions: “Born in the fifties” & “Flew in the fifties”. Y’all are the ones who labeled her a “cougar”

I see nothing in this ad that should be offensive to women in general or this woman in particular. What I find offensive is not identifying the aircraft. I’m guessing it’s a Convair F-102 Delta Dagger.

I had just started working at Boeing. Heard about it on the radio-KOMO I believe on the way home from work. I believe the pilot’s name was Rolf Neslund. Didn’t he have an untimely death at the hands of his wife? Also recollect the city was going to rebuild the drawbridge but a group of WS businesses headed by Dick Kennedy(Howden-Kennedy funeral home)said WS woud secede from the city if we didn’t get a new bridge.

Hi I’m in the admiral district and am looking for a good (or bad 😜) home for some furniture. The love seat (red/wine color)is in great shape but heavy and needs at least two strong people to move. The 6 drawer bureau is clean and functional. Both come from a non-smoking, no pet house hold.

Call me if you would like them. I can be home for pickup anytime. 206-605-3622

I was living in a small apartment above the then Venable & Wing Law Office, now, for many years, Barnecut Law Office, having moved there about two months before, being on my own for the first time.

I believe it was around 10:00 am or so that I was on the #18 bus on my way to the Sears at 1st & Lander. As the bus was coming up from under the Fauntleroy Expressway on the ramp next to the fire station (technically, the ramp that replaced the very similarly designed ramp upon construction of the high bridge), I had this fleeting though; What would happen if something ever happened to just one of the two bascule drawbridges? Would they reroute traffic for both directions over the remaining bridge?”

I was absolutely stunned, as the bus came up topside around the curve of the ramp, to see the northernmost/westbound bridge stuck in the up position, either new jersey barriers there where none had been before, or existing ones moved (don’t recall for sure), and traffic going both ways over the remaining bridge!

The only thing I could figure out, aside from a one-time only (so far) solid incident of experiencing ESP, was that I heard something about it on my clock radio that was set to KJR-AM (top 40 radio). Either I had the radio on overnight, or it started up in the morning at the pre-set wake up time, and although I didn’t consciously hear it and it was planted in my sub-conscious.

Anyone else around these parts back then that remember where they were/what they were doing when they first became aware of the Ship Hitting the Span?

First of all, you did invite them. It’s only been two weeks since you took the feeders down, so they’re probably still reaping remnants of seed. If they haven’t moved into (or under) any structures on your property, such as sheds, wood piles, etc., there’s really nothing you can do except to wait it out. Which is really the best option anyway, as poisoning creates many new problems – such as the possibility that your dog will catch a dead or alive poisoned rat, thereby ingesting the poison, or the rat will die somewhere you can’t reach it. The only real way to address a rat problem is not to provide food or shelter for them. They will eat your strawberries, though.
If you don’t want to wait for them leave, John at Adept Pest is the best pest guy around. He’ll probably tell you all the same things, just like he did me, but he could look things over for you to see if there is a problem that won’t go away on its own.

Contact dermatitis: a red rash wherever skin came into contact with the irritant
Latex allergy: symptoms can range from minor skin irritations to life threatening shock

Seasonal allergies: sneezing, runny nose and red/watery/scratchy eyes
Animal allergies: sneezing, runny nose. For people with asthma, it may also increase asthma wheezing.
Anaphylaxis: skin rash, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing and shock
Allergy to mold: coughing, itchy and watery eyes and hives

Well, I agree so far. Went to check it out in Burien. Felt like it was not completely done being built inside! Cold cement floors. Couldn’t find anyone on the floor to ask a question about picking up my special order. Just did not feel inviting at all. Too much of an industrial modern look.

    Hi
Any input on this subject would be appreciated.
I have noticed this spring that I have many more rats in my flower and vegetable gardens. I was feeding birds with a hanging bird feeder close to the flower garden, which I’ve done for years. The birds would push the seed on the ground which, I think attracted the rats ( probably stating the obvious ). I have quit feeding the birds 2 weeks ago and the rats are still there regularly. I have a dog who is outside often. I’m worried about my very big dog killing a rat and the repercussions that brings.

Does anyone have any thoughts on natural ways to eliminate the rats from my area?

    Thanks
    John

tiser, I share your concern. I agree that the Columbia City PCC is the absolute best. The layout, the hot bar, the employees – all wonderful (well, save one). The store also draws a diverse and creative clientele, which is interesting and refreshing.
Unfortunately, I’ve also heard that PCC is taking a more corporate direction. If it’s anything like what’s happened to Whole Foods, we’re in trouble. WF used to have something of a mission statement regarding organic, non-GMO foods, high quality, and great selection. No more, it seems. It would be a shame if PCC went the same way.

tiser: I couldn’t agree more! LOVE the Columbia City store and made the trek frequently… moved south late last summer and was SO excited there was a going to be a new Burien store…..I do not like it. IMO Columbia City and Issaquah should be the template for all future stores. I think they really missed the mark on Burien and the comments on our local Next Door & FB sites tell the tale. Hopefully PCC is listening and the design for WS can be altered if they were going the direction of Burien.
