I came home last week to find a Pigeon Point Neighborhood Council (PPNC, aka the Pete Spaulding Gang) newsletter hanging off the flag of my mailbox. More than 10 years ago, I explained to him (then “President”) and the then “Secretary” that this was a Federal offense and to knock it off … pretty please … with sugar on top. He scoffed at me and was willing to draw down on that not being true, as did the “Secretary,” who upon being encouraged to go read up on this law said I was harassing her. I called both Spaulding and the Secretary the next time the newsletter was put in my mailbox and was met with the same indifference and demeaning attitudes. I then called the Delridge Council and spoke to the then “President,” who apparently was only feigning concern, because newsletters continue to be disposed of in my mailbox, on the flag of the mailbox, and/or on my porch.

Aside from the fact I consider this group of five or so narcissists to be … just that–yeah, some people like to create power positions when they can’t legitimately earn them–my primary beef with the Gang was that they publicized in their newsletter that the solution to cleaning up their neighborhood of drugs, junk cars, barking dogs, and general nuisances was to contact the “owners of the properties to report renters.” Uh … I was a renter then and found that more than offensive. In addition, on their website at that time, they posted the home phone number of a commercial property owner and encouraged residents to call his number “at all hours” to complain about light pollution coming from one or two of his industrial-strength lights. I called this gentleman about this, solved the mystery for him of his numerous crank calls he’d been getting, and also learned from him that he had been made aware of the problem and in fact it was not his property with the offending lights. He, too, was unable to reason with the Gang. I have all of this printed out in hard copy.

Back to last week. I was prompted to go deeper into the latest Gang shenanigans on the WSB and found their most recent “we are above all laws” stunt–the posting of an illegal sign on city(??) property regarding dogs at/near Pathfinder. No surprise there. I could not care less about the dog issues and illegal or legal signs pooping or popping up around the hood–I do care about a self-selected few who think they own the joint … and don’t. Further digging reveals the Gang is getting ready to paint a “mural” on 21st and Genesee to “pretty up the place” and “calm traffic.” How is this any different from graffiti that some errant teen tags on a wall? It’s not as far as I’m concerned. And if the art style is to follow what this neighborhood typically endures on the signs posted periodically on the sacred Gang-sanctioned sticks, we’ll probably be seeing Spaulding’s mug every time we enter or exit our community.

All of this has been discussed with “the management” (see above) and while I at one time freely bandied about my name and particulars with these folks I choose not to do so now because I genuinely worry about retaliation–gawd forbid if a stray dandelion or abandoned car engine oozes out from the grass in my yard.

Wanted to spread the word about a dog attack that occurred Wednesday around 8am on the 3800 block of 48th Ave (between Andover & Charlestown). I was walking with my 2 small dogs (each around 20 lbs) on the sidewalk when a dog (black/white, ~60-80 lbs, appeared to be a pit bull or mix) in the front yard of a house burst it’s head through a loose fence section, grabbed my dog closest to the fence by its hind leg, dragged him through the fence and continued attacking him in the yard. There was no warning before the attack; I didn’t even know the dog was there before he was pulling my dog through the fence. I squeezed through the broken fence section into the yard (yelling like a mad woman) and when I got to them the dog backed off, though still was acting aggressively. My dog was bitten on his neck and hind leg. The owner eventually came out of the house after about another minute of me yelling and called his dog in. He appeared unconcerned about the attack and actually told me ‘You’re in my yard’. Unbelievable. Very scary, and we were very lucky that it didn’t end up worse that what it did. I filed a complaint with animal services – citation # 15-02916. If anyone else has had an incident with possibly the same dog, please report it to animal services and reference my citation # (15-02916).

You know why Spain has such high unemployment? They’ve been hammered for almost a decade with austerity measures, which depresses growth.

I hear you yelling already that it isn’t the whole reason and you’re right, but it’s been pushing the unemployment number into crazy heights for years now. It may have been not great before, but it’s horrendous now.

But Skeets, what I really want to focus on is demand. Demand isn’t just half the equation, it IS the equation. Unemployment is 100% without it.

How do you drive demand? Ask Henry Ford, or any of a thousand economists, including Robert Reich.

You use the tools available (that have ALWAYS been available until they get removed from the toolboxes via BAD trade agreements) to help balance the advantages outside countries use to leverage their BAD conditions against us or other modern economies that give a damn about the planet. See Germany. High import tariffs, high union membership, high quality products, high employment, high exports, strong environmental rules, thriving economy.

Are they perfect? Nope. Do they have a more fair economy with high quality of life and infrastructure poised to kick our ass for the next 50 years. Yes.

Look back at when we were the economic envy of the world, post war. We had the GI Bill, very high infrastructure spending, tons of growth and VERY high taxes on the upper incomes. And we were the most successful economy in the history of the world.

Some say that can’t work anymore in the era of globalization. It can and does, it takes merely the will to reimpose balance.

My wife (who was born in raised in NOLA) and I just got back from Mardi Gras a few weeks ago and have been dying to try this place out. We don’t care if they stack up to Cafe Du Monde or not, having a beignet shop out here is great news! (Anything would beat what Seattle Center used to have in the Armory)

For her birthday in April we’re planning on hitting the Crawfish house for a few lbs of mudbugs and then getting some beignets to go for dessert. Looking forward to it and glad to hear people are enjoying them! :)

LVBebe if you are still watching this thread, I did come across a small landscape supply company not far from Westwood Village. It’s located at 9010 Delridge just about a block SOUTH of Barton, the east side of the street, in that triangle . It’s rather industrial looking and easy to miss. They have smaller boulders of varying types priced at 10 cents a pound. So an average 30 lb boulder would be $3.00 or so. The guy running the place was friendly and helpful.

Hey, apologies to Smitty as the blog wasn’t allowing me to post and some were dropping out.

As per your question, Smitty, I’m still sorting out strategies. As you say, bonds are likely to continue to suck. Large caps with high valuations pushed up via buy backs are likely candidates to be divested – at least if we see some initial pullback. But time-sensitive ETF shorting plays would likely require two things I don’t consider strengths of mine. One being it requires some hawkish attention that I generally don’t have and second, is because of that, I tend not make multiple, high frequency moves. I generally stick with bigger picture plays that I can block in for a few months at least and adjust accordingly as the situation presents itself.

So, what am I planning for that first mid-length play? Will move out of any REIT-based stuff that I might have laying around, and large caps as well. Will be curious what happens with some of the more dividend growth companies as they look at their balance sheets and decide what they’re going to do. We may see something in that area over the next few months that suggests a longer term play looks good.

JTB: Yup. I’ve often described the position of the individual investor as, you can’t win, you can’t break even, and you can’t get out of the game. ;-)

There has been a fair amount of discussion on WSB about this issue from people involved in it, not simply citizens with opinions. One I found helpful was from the trucker who discussed the issue of the shortage of chassis.

You’ll note this thread began with a post from Alki Beach that proved to be grossly uninformed and mostly an anti-union rant. Whether or not that individual is connected to BeachDriveGirl or they simply share a related geographic reference is not clear. However, she at least has bothered to retrieve information on the topic, albeit from obvious anti-union sources including Breitbart.com (perhaps James O’Keefe might sieze this opportunity to create a deceptive video Breitbart could reference as in other instances). Dobro’s comment questioning the connection between a local action in Portland last summer over a dispute on the roll of electricians and the current general contract dispute affecting the entire West Coast is worth considering.

It is a bit frustrating to me that management, labor and the negotiator seem to have some sort of agreement to keep mum on the specific issues under discussion.

The fact of the matter is that for all intent and purpose, the union movement in this country is effectively dead. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rate of union membership for the private sector was 6.7%, and for the public sector 35.3% in 2014. About 40% of public employees are constrained by laws making it illegal for them to organize a union and campaigns to strip collective bargaining for public employees are relentless and systematic in states governed by Republican majorities.

I think we know what has happened to real income growth for wage earners in the last 30 years. Nada. So there are some who hang on to hopes for a resurgence of organized labor to help reverse that trend. Others appears to like things just as they are and encourage those whose pay scale has declined to be happy they have a job at all. I don’t believe there is any question that the latter are winning the argument at this point in time in spite of the illogical, sometimes vindictive rationale they put forward against organized labor.

He is great with other dogs and even has a few long time friends at West Crest dog park! Reggae loves to sing along with commercial jingles and Disney junior theme songs. “RadioShack … says it will sell up to 2,400 stores.

“Part of its bankruptcy plan calls for an asset purchase agreement with Standard General and Sprint to use a “store-in-store” model that would allow the RadioShack name to exist in as many as 1,750 of the acquired shops. Other underperforming locations would shutter. The branding on the surviving stores would primarily feature Sprint.”

I have always appreciated the convenience of the Junction Radio Shack and occasionally the Westwood store for odds and ends, although I have wondered about their viability. Still, if specialty chains can make a business selling lightbulbs or batteries then I would think that Radio Shack stores could be profitable as well.
