miwsParticipantBumping this.
There was just fire callout to an apartment building about a block-ish to the southwest of me:
According to the report at this time, it was caused by a cigarette discarded into a bush, and a deck was scorched.
Besides this, which was relatively minor, and the one that Jan mentions above, there was a fire at an apartment building on Monday, in the Manette neighborhood of Bremerton, which made 15 people Homeless. It was caused by carelessly discarded cigarettes:
These other two incidents, especially the Manette one, reinforce the importance of Jan’s message.

clulessinwsParticipantOver the years I have sent emails to a succession of mayors asking for help and have worked with a succession of Animal Control managers. I sent this a few minutes ago to our council member in the hopes that he can do something.
Dear Council Member Rasmussen,
As you may have noticed over the years on the West Seattle Blog, West Seattle has a problem with off leash dogs roaming and attacking people or other pets. The latest incident was last night at Lincoln Park.
https://westseattleblog.com/forum/topic/rant-dog-attackoff-leash-dogs-at-lincoln-park
I have been in touch with Animal Control (Tracy Bahrakis) about my concerns for years and have reported many violations that I have seen at various West Seattle Parks. I have been bitten myself.
I have email documentation going back 5 years of reports to Animal Control.
I am writing you today to ask for help. This problem is out of control and despite citizen efforts to help solve the problem, off leash violations happen multiple times per day and attacks happen far too frequently.

June 18, 2015 at 4:00 am #824941joanbatemanMemberInteresting reading.
As a Parks Advocate, and Community Activist, much of what we have in West Seattle has been hard fought with blood, sweat, and tears both around the table, and with hands in the dirt.
This proposal would change the way we look at and use areas of land designated by our predecessors and ourselves for natural purposes. The inclusion of bikes and other disruptive devices would do harm not only to the physical environment ( think here more money to sustain and higher taxes) and nature’s environment of birds, animal, insect, etc, but only ourselves. That is a high risk venue.
Watching how well people disobey the law about cell phone usage and texting, makes me very concerned about the lawsuits springing up because Parks allowed a biker to do his or her think, going out of control, and injuring some man, women, child or dog…. or maybe the last species of a species of bird, animal, or plant.
Having lived in a natural area for over 45 years, the wild life in Seattle is very precious. Once gone, it will not be recreated. Think Washington, DC.
It is not enough to set aside a bike trail in the midst of a green belt, when that area is populated by owls, eagle, peregrine falcons, raccoons, coyotes, and oh yes, the cougar that once in a while comes down from the mountains.
I think bikers should have their fun, but not at the risk to an already endangered, at risk environment.
Please, if you want to change the City’s proposal, sign this petition.

“My kids and I came across these bone like, heavy rocks while on our beach walk today. Could they be bones of a whale or something, dinosaur!!? They have interesting dips and angles, and are really concave like hip bones. Very dense and heavy. What are your thoughts, West Seattle?
Also, we came across a (dead) baby octopus and a ton of moon snails today, we live in such a beautiful place, what a fun day!”

Just looked in on this (I’m writing a story right now about an unrelated crowdfunding effort) and am glad to see she’s passed the goal, which means she gets the money (Kickstarter is a “make your goal or get nothing” setup), and is likely to get more because somewhere along the line, national media jumped in. Very cool.

miwsParticipantI Wonder, I don’t know if the crappy patch jobs would be considered “minor” road repair, but this might be a start:
https://seattle-csrprodcwi.motorolasolutions.com/ServiceRequest.mvc/SRIntakeStep2?id=TRPOTHOL
It looks like there is an option to comment, somewhere with in the reporting process, so I would definitely make a point of mentioning the name of the company that did the lousy job, and perhaps suggesting to SDOT that the company be forced to come back and do it right, and immediately, or that SDOT repair it properly, and bill the offending Co. for the full cost.
Heck, if the offending Co. is known, I’d be tempted to write them a firm, but polite note too.
This was one of my biggest peeves back when I had a car, or otherwise was driving regularly. Mainly, I think, because it seemed like every time the City was able to do a nice repaving job on a significant section of road, it wasn’t long at all before some utility Co. was in there tearing it up, doing a totally crappy and inadequate patch-up, and we’d get Seattle’s latest repeating pothole.

5 things for the rest of your West Seattle Tuesday, + 3 geese
I have never heard a story about one person “placing” the geese. Following is the story that was told during a triple-digit comment thread about a dog attacking one of the geese in 2012:
Lincoln Park ‘resident goose’ attacked by dog, readers report
All I know firsthand is that white goose/geese have been there at least 15 years or so. My kid and I would see them down at Cove Park (reopening soon!!!!) during walks down the hill in his toddler days. Could have been around long before that, but it’s the clearest memory I have.
If Wakeflood or anyone else has any idea how to reach the person he mentioned (from Anacortes? why here, then?), that certainly would be a story of interest. – TR
