HunterGParticipantThanks for the info on the geese, pigeon mom. The mother of the two siblings must have been who this park-goer was speaking about.
It’s incredible tragic that the mother was killed. Another reason folks why YOUR DOG SHOULD BE ON A LEASH!!!

mehud7Participantbabalou-Seems to me you owe hammerhead some credit and an apology.
Hopefully something will work out for the safety of these vulnerable geese.

HunterGParticipantBabaoul, This is wonderful news, and thank you so much for posting a follow up.
Pigeonmom – yes, these are the geese in question.
January 23, 2012 at 3:34 am #745242In reply to: injured wild life
pigeonmomParticipantThese geese are siblings, hatched right near the ferry dock. They will be 2 years old in May.
Their mother was a fixture in the area for 15+ years and was killed by a dog last year.

pigeonmomParticipantIs this about the geese on the beach near the ferry dock?
They are siblings and their mother was killed by dog.

hammerheadParticipantI told you that Seattle animal control would do no harm to those geese, You asked for help. I offered but you did not like the approach that I was going to take, animal control. I am a rescue person I would never go to a place that harms animals. I called Seattle animal control and told them about the geese but because I did not know the geese’s location they could go out that day. So it seems you ended up with the same approach I suggested in the first place.
I still believe they should be moved,(I am actually still working on that) as they get older they will be at more risk from all those IRRESPONSIBLE owners who allow their the dogs off leash to bother the geese.
I may not be the most tactful person but I will do what ever I can when some one asks for help about animals.

in forum Open DiscussionbabalouParticipantfOLLOW UP: I was concerned about the domestic goose that was loosing neck feathers.to share what I learned:The owner of Baahaus on Vashon island (a farm animal sanctuary)said loss of neck feathers can be result of mating behavior and her geese already were mating (due to warmer weather 2 weeks ago). Also, based on a message I left with animal control, they went out to check on her and took pictures and will check with a vet, but they think she is fine.I’m really impressed that animal control took this initiative.I’ve learned alot, not the least of which is what a great animal shelter we have (not the grim”end of the line” image I had of the “dog pound” of old–really compassionate people)Now if only people would leash their dogs at the park so the geese aren’t constantly getting charged (off their nest, etc.)
January 18, 2012 at 11:38 pm #745241In reply to: injured wild life
HunterGParticipantbabalou – I have heard from several other park-goers that these geese have lived in the park and have been regular fixtures there for 14+ years.
Although I am concerned, I have no idea as to what I could do. One of them is injured? Or is it that you are concerned that they are abandoned? I just saw the two the other day.

HunterGParticipantWhere are you at babalou? This isn’t our Lincoln Park geese right?
December 30, 2010 at 1:20 am #712413In reply to: Have you lost two ducks?
miwsParticipantI’ve noticed that it looks like our duck friend in mirabile’s pic, has some chapping or something at the tip of his beak, which reminded me of an issue that Greenlake had way back in the ’80’s or ’90’s.
Apparently, the Canadian Geese living around the lake, were chasing the walkers, bikers, and joggers, and nipping at their ankles.
Well, this one particular goose had nipped at so many ankles, his beak became quite chapped. This was, of course, very uncomfortable.
Anyway, one day he remembered there was a small Pharmacy nearby. So, he goose steps on over, and explains his dilemma to the Pharmacist.
The Pharmacist says “I have just what you need!” And proceeds to retrieve a giant Chapstick®.
The goose says, “I’ll take it!“
The Pharmacist asks, “Will you be paying cash, today?“
The goose replies, “No. Just put it on my bill!“

SonomaParticipantAs of this evening, the geese are OK. One of the women who work at the ferry dock visits them sometimes. I saw her this evening, directing ferry traffic, and I asked her to keep an eye out for the birds when she isn’t busy. She said she would. Very kind of her. There’s also a rather cute dark-haired patrolman (!) who directs ferry traffic, and I’m sure he would not put up with animal cruelty, either. And I remain, the vigilant Vigil-Anti-Maim.

SonomaParticipantI agree, Robindianne. Is it really so much fun to scare little animals? I saw a kid throwing rocks at a pigeon, and I gave him the stink-eye. He stopped and looked sheepish. Pigeons are not the most beloved of birds, but throwing rocks is nasty. Some parents are clueless, or too spineless to take a moment to educate their kids.
October 15, 2010 at 2:05 am #705622In reply to: Let's keep an eye out for the white geese
RobindianneParticipantWhile the nasty wretches who hurt these geese are terrible, I also think we need to feel comfortable scolding others’ children who chase them in fun. Many kids (even toddlers) play a “fun game” of causing geese, gulls, crows, pigeons, etc to run by scaring them. I have been known to scold/educate kids in their parents’ presence because I think some parents don’t even think about teaching young ones not to scare wildlife. Often I hear, “it’s just a bird,” which opens the door for talking to parents in front of their kids about the animal’s point of view, feelings, life, etc. I’m not usually so preachy but, animals and others who have no voice get my protection.

SonomaParticipantThanks! Those geese give so many of us pleasure – a definite highlight of any beach walk. Beautiful, and with amusing personalities.
I love dogs, but owners need to control them. But that’s a whole ‘nuther can of Alpo.
October 14, 2010 at 1:30 pm #705619In reply to: Let's keep an eye out for the white geese
anonymeParticipantSonoma, I promise to do just that. There are also some dog owners who think it’s OK to let their dogs chase or harass wildlife, sometimes even letting them off leash to do so.

January 15, 2010 at 6:58 pm #686559KBearParticipantHow about a law against geese pooping in the park? I think that would be a greater benefit than “no spitting”, and just as enforceable.

HMC RichParticipantJenV, Thank You for posting your opinion. I know there are many Christians who are absolutely judgemental about same sex marriage etc. I do not believe that their savior would agree with them. I also know that when votes come up 70% or so (give or take 10 percent) vote gay marriage initiatives down. Many of those voters are not hard core Christians. This is bigger than the Religious Right that so many people demonize.
You know I might actually support same sex marriage. I did not strictly deny it. I also want to make some other points which might actually strengthen your argument.
KBear, your post was spot on. He can be called a hypocrite but so can cheating politicians from each side of the aisle. Craig may have played footsy in a bathroom and Foley may have sent innapropriate messages to young pages. They were wrong but actually did not get caught having sexual relations. Maybe if either case had been able to go further that would be the case. I have and always will be disturbed by the Kennedys and their blatant disregard for women. I will never, ever understand why Edward Kennedy ever got away with the Chappaquidic (sic) incident. I will never understand why John was such a predator and of course Mr. Clinton’s mistake(s). All these behaviors damage the family first and all of them should have been called on it. It is not excusable. There is a sanctity of marriage and life. Fortunately, we are a forgiving society and we do forgive if we think people are sincere.
But First. JoB, I think I know my wife a little, not much, but a little more than you. My “Hot” statement was a joke and she knows it. She can hit me with a pan or mink whips for other things but not that bad joke. Besides, I wonder if it was her (Maria’s) accent? Sultry foreign voice and hot (otherwise, why bother!) Sexism lives!!!! Not all males have been castrated by the women’s movement. Actually I support the woman’s movement, especially when I am walking behind them. OK, for that last paragraph every HR department in the US would fire me. I’m just kidding around. Some won’t see it that way. Can’t PC everyone.
Love was not necessarily a part of marriage in ancient Greece. Plato proposed abolishing marriage. Aristotle thought it good for family structure but did not believe life devoted to family and children was not a noble one. Please find romantic love in a greek tragedy. The Greek pantheon had plenty of lust and vengeance but not much Love either. Eros was a huge part of homosexuality in Greece partly in Athens but especially in Sparta. Christianity was not around and as it formed it embraced the family unit and does not usually include homosexuality among other sexual practices. More on this later.
JoB you brought up dowery’s. I give you 5 goats, 3 yaks and a gaggle of geese for your child. Boy, that is romantic, NOT! but it was a norm wasn’t it.
Christianity made the family unit the central and best way for personal fulfillment from the union of a man and a woman resulting in children. In Europe romantic love for the common man and woman to the aristocracy developed in the Middle Ages which was much different from arranged marriages. Also Christianity introduced consent as a part of the process of marriage. Marriage without coercion is now a Christian value.
Since our general morals in America come from the tenets of Christianity, the institution of marriage is predominately a holy union between a man and a woman who love each other. Now, because of no fault divorce, many marriages are a farce. I am not saying there should not be divorce but it might be too easy these days to get one. I also know people change.
But, Love between two people is the determining factor for a union. Marriage these days is based usually on two individuals in Love and consenting to live together as a family until they die. This “Love” aspect from our Christian roots actually can help favor the same sex marriage argument. Conversely, Marriage of same sex people for procreation does not work so well but through outside procedures it can happen. There is one of the dilemmas for a heterosexual.
I might even be willing to support Same Sex Marriage if Roe v Wade was overturned. I suspect even some other Christians might feel the same way. Others will not. How does the LGBT family feel about that?
I have a gay relative. I wish for him the same happiness that I wish for everyone else. Nothing is completely black and white. What I am against now I might be for later or vice versa. Bludgeoning anyone with a point of view usually turns people off. But, standing up for your beliefs is a noble endeavor. There are many quandry’s and sometimes we change our minds. Sometimes we make good decisions and other times we make bad decisions. It is called accountability. If you talk the talk you had better walk the walk. Sanford used to but he fell prey to lust or something else. He showed some dignity in coming clean but I would not want to be him right now.
June 12, 2009 at 7:32 pm #669498JiggersMemberPETA..in New York they are going to round up some 2,000 geese soon and kill them simply because they live and flock near airports. Go get em’ PETA.

WSBKeymasterSend over the geese (or are they big ducks?) from the beach by the ferry dock, barely a mile south of Duckitude HQ. Those guys are FEROCIOUS. And we noticed the other night, they have very young reinforcements.

Maybe a Guard Goose?
May 26, 2009 at 2:59 am #667518In reply to: Raccoons — agitated in my backyard
hammerheadParticipantRaccoons will not harm children. I will not disagree with some diseases. Distemper: dogs can get that, if your dogs has not been vaccinated then there is a possibility. As for rabies we have not seen any reported cases since the 1920’s. You are more at risk of getting bit by a dog or attacked by a shark.
Jeez The babies are able t be on there own. The “dropping” are from an omnivore not bad for you or animals. They are NOT tainted. They are a wild animal just like the candian geese but hey we kill them because there are to many. (they are rounded up every year and gased).
I understand your problem. I have a group of raccoons and have no problems again I coexist. The guy mentioned above doesn’t agree with feeding or providing water that is his opinion I do both and have NO problems. I am just saying.
