I used Uber in the early morning recently and it was not a problem getting a car. I usually check the Uber app about 1/2 hour before I want to leave for the airport to get a sense of how many cars are in the area and close by (and you’ll get an estimated wait time). I don’t allow a lot of extra time to get to the airport so I don’t want to be surprised by a long wait!

Why is it acceptable to broadcast so called “music” blaring onto Harbor Ave SW every evening? We residents don’t like having your selection of “music” being forced into our ears. I’m as offended by the Shell Pioneer drilling platform as anyone, but that ridiculous barge out in front of our home, along with that over the top loud “music” is an extreme example of noise pollution!

    Hi there,

As a local contractor I can vouch for the work done with West Seattle Fence. They are well priced, reasonable and a great team. Cant recommend them enough.

Hey Mike that WAS another touching tribute to Kevin. I smiled largely.

My father (who apparently shopped the same stores as Kevin) would have likely brought you those Vienna’s along with a few tins of Armour Deviled Ham and some Li’l Smokies too. ;-)

Fence: We’ve used both Alpine Fence and West Seattle Fence. I would recommend West Seattle Fence. They did an awesome job at a fair price. He also used clear cedar instead of tight not at a price that was comparable to other quotes.

Electrical: We have used Mr. Sarky o.k service and descent price. We also just used Exact Electric. Exact did a great job, very professional. The only problem I had was that the price was significantly higher that the quote. I sent them an email and they called within 15 minutes and adjusted the price significantly. Not down to the original quote but a descent amount. Make sure you get a written quote.

Landscape: A landscape project with hardscape is a challenging area. Not alot of landscape companies also do hardscape. We did a large stamped concrete patio built in grill and refrigerator and plantings. For that project we went with Sublime Garden Design. They do design and project management. They pull all of the aspects of such a project together. Also, the design they came up with was nothing I would have ever thought of. The plantings they used were also unique and not cookie cutter..if that makes sense. I was very happy with their design and service. Also we are currently working with David at Garden Shed Design who is building us an arbor. I’ll let you know how that goes. Hope that helps.

I live between the Admiral and West Seattle junction and I took Uber to the airport for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was $24.99. I had to take a cab back and it was $41. There was no one in West Seattle at the time, but a very nice young man in the Georgetown area made it to me in about 15 minutes. Also, cheaper than the shuttle.

They will get over it. Not only that, they will teach their young that you are not only safe – you’re a food source. The growing family will visit you for as long as you’re both around.

A few years ago, I’d made good friends with a family of 6 or more crows. They would sit on my porch and peer in the window to let me know they were ready to be served. Anyway, one of them got sick and trusted me enough to come and sit by my door as she was dying. It was a hot night, and I had nowhere to hide her. I thought of placing her in a dense conifer; to my surprise, she climbed on my arm when I offered it. She opted for the fence instead of the tree, and sat there watching as all of her kin flew east for the night. In the morning, she was dead. Per instructions from the Health Dept., I bagged her body for pickup. A silent row of crows sat on the wires above, observing. They never came back. Crows are very touchy about death, and not too discerning about assigning blame.

Thanks all! And especially for the link, talaki. Tools??? This changes my perspective entirely to think of them like “small, winged, primates.” Incredible. Makes them a bit more relatable, too. I’ll try a few things and see what happens… Though I am hopeful their guard will go back to normal soon.

I suspect they do have an active nest close by. My resident crows, Black Bart and his beautiful wife Betty (who have been a pair for a long, long time) are exhibiting this behavior. They are a joy! If you can, especially during the hot weather, have a water source for them that would be great. They will go to a birdbath but if you don’t have one a tin pie pan with some water in it works swell. They like shiny things. They are pretty good at finding food. I would suggest just giving them their space and all will resolve once a chick fledges.

We’ve lived “east of 35th” (North Delridge area) for 14 1/2 years and love our neighborhood. There is currently a house for rent on 25th Ave. SW near us. It’s on a nice block of homes with lots of parks and greenspace and right near a neighborhood Pea Patch. I think it’s in that price range and is managed by Cayce. Good luck!

We have a similar situation with a threesome in our area. Last summer they had a nest close by and while the chick was young and getting ready to fledge they were very aggressive. We tried to stay out of their way as much as we could and it passed once the chick got old enough. The aggressive part went on for a bout two weeks. Good luck – hopefully it will resolve itself. Peanuts would be a good offering too.

I wonder if there is a chick on the ground. This is normal, but it might be close to where you are walking.

For years, I’ve successfully shared territory with a small family of crows – a pretty consistent set of three. Maybe a pair and an adult child? They eat the slugs in my garden, I occasionally toss them a shelled peanut, we’re good. They were here before I moved in, and I know enough about their general lifestyles and social abilities to respect them. Seems my neighbors on both sides do, too. Here’s my problem: I’m pretty sure that for the first time since I’ve lived here, they have an active nest close by. Now they dive-bomb me when I try to water my plants, or try to exist in my backyard. Forget extended yard work. I swear they sit and watch through the windows and start cawing and flapping when they think I’m about to come outside. Anyone have advice or experience communicating to crows that you are not a threat? I know food can be a powerful communication tool, but I’m worried about accidentally teaching them to attack me for snacks. Maybe I just need to give them a little space for a while? But how long? And then after that, have I set a precedent that they see me as a threat and continue to fight? We need a truce.

    Hi Bonnie,

Is there any way to get an address or contact person? I would be willing to check it out– we are really having a rough go finding a place.

    Thank you so much!

Mike said it much more eloquently than I would put it. Those who say ‘Stay west of 35th’ are not always right. That has been going on for years and it is just wrong. There are many nice places east of 35th and many, many nice people who live east of 35th. If you find a rental in any area I would suggest checking the area out at night. See what it’s like.

Being a teacher you will most likely be able to get your son into the school you want if you are working in the north cluster schools. I’m not sure exactly how it works but you have a better chance. Don’t take my word for it though, check into it yourself but if you are going to be working at West Seattle High I am pretty sure you would be able to have your son go there.

Good luck and welcome to the neighborhood!
