Skeeter and Smitty are from the planet of the Highly Intelligent Life Forms – or at least Highly Intelligent Enough to Figure This Stuff Out.

JoB and metrognome, thanks for your comments – you’re both from a pretty smart planet, too! And, yes, I try to be positive, even when I’m complaining. This is no place for trolling or even for adorable SNL Church Ladies!

anonyme – I like your British-flavored moniker for the driver, but BMW is a German car (ok, Bavarian.) My German is pretty bad, all I could come up with is ‘Wiener’ or the longer ‘Wienerschnitzel’ for the ‘W.’ Anybody have suggestions for the ‘B’ and the ‘M’?

unfortunately, it is highly likely that the BMW driver considers it the cyclist’s fault that he got a ticket.

Thank you for the suggestion, but after checking it seems Hiawatha only offers am care for elementary students.

    Thanks!

I’m convinced that people who set off their own big fireworks are selfish base-turds. It’s illegal, it’s dangerous, it’s incredibly messy (don’t get me started on the state of our parks and school fields on the 5th of July), and psychologically damaging to veterans and other people, and pets. Ridiculous.

It’s an interesting formula. Property taxes collected can only increase by 1% per year. (Let’s ignore the special levies for a moment.) So if the average property increased in value (assessed value) by 10% and *your* property only increased by 5% then you would actually see your property tax bill *decrease* even though your assessed value *increased.* Does that make sense?

Let’s say in year one, there are two homes in King County. Each home is assessed at $1M. Each home gets a property tax bill for $10,000. So King County collects $20,000.

Things are good in year two. Home A increases in assessed value to $1.2M. Home B increases in assessed value to $1.1M. Both homeowners are wondering how they can afford their next tax bill. Fear not!! King County collected $20,000 in year one and they can only collect $20,200 in year two. ($20,000 times 1.01 equals $20,200.) How is that $20,200 apportioned to the two homeowners? By assessed value. Home A will get a property tax bill for $10,539 and Home B will get a property tax bill for $9,661. See what happened there? Home B increased in value, but its taxes *decreased* because Home B’s assessed value increased by less than the county average.

Now… special levies are a different matter. Those are voter approved, and are not subject to the 1% increase cap. But the voters wanted those special levies and approved them. So presumably we are comfortable with the extra taxes.

Oh, mark, that is just beautiful! I hope the cop gave the dude a ticket, and did not let him go with just a warning.

My own taste of revenge, courtesy of a cop (and I’m pretty sure I’ve shared this here before), was 12 or so year ago, crossing toward the west, at 35th & Fauntleroy, over toward the Taco Time corner.

This was early morning, on my way to work at Seattle Filmworks, and after I got the walk light I looked to make sure nobody was running the left turn light that had just turned red, coming off the Fauntleroy Expressway.

It was clear, so I started across. Next thing I know first cars in the line of eastbound traffic stop, at least one hits the horn, and out of my peripheral I see this little white car running that very red light.

Next thing I see, is an eastbound Motorcycle Officer hit the lights and siren, and lane split between the cars. I gladly let him go in front of me.

He caught her down at the red light crossing Avalon. Glad it was a Motor Officer, don’t know if one in a car could have made it in time.

I hope he gave her a ticket.

Sus, I have more than enough. I just prefer not to spend in on hideous, crappy Hummer House. Modernist, really? Is that the architectural term? I stand by my opinions, and there’s no need for snottiness. A more crowded West Seattle means tons more traffic within area, which means more car pollution, tall blocks of condo buildings block all-too-rare sunlight, more mischief in our parks and public places (graffiti, for one), etc., etc.

Now, I do love West Seattle, but I stand by my views. Nuff said. I don’t want to get into a b-tchfest with you. Ugh.

Gotta admit, though, your first sentence made me smile – reminded me of the Church Lady from SNL. Very cool.

Jeannie: Well aren’t we all lucky to have you as an arbiter of taste for what should and shouldn’t be built in our neighborhoods. Fact is that there is a huge backlog of hideous, crappy houses that ought to have been adiosed a long time ago. And $900K Modernist houses seem to be selling before builders can even finish them. So it appears to me that there are a lot of people who couldn’t care less about your provincial bull**it attitude. There’s plenty of room for everyone in West Seattle, not just the people that you despise because they have more than you.

Last week, a woman on Oregon SW just east of California in a white SUV was having a terrible time parallel parking with one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding a phone to her ear. My wife and I cracked up although I gave a wide berth in getting around her as quickly as I could.

Ignorant probably is an appropriate word because it connotes lacking knowledge or lacking awareness. Anyone driving with a phone in one hand and talking is definitely not aware.

I’m a SAHM and would like to offer some in-home care for a child 3-10hrs/week (flexible, but regular/reliable). I was First Aid certified in 2010, and could get re-certified before starting. I have my own kids as well (age 2, 5, 7, though in school part of the time), so I’m looking for a family that has only 1 that needs care. I’ve been participating in a co-op preschool (with play focus) as a “working” parent for 5 years, which has been great for “experience” in childcare and child development. Let me know if you’d like to explore some options!

I didn’t hear any booms during today’s game, but as I was waiting for the bus across from the College, coming Home from the Car Show, the thought crossed my mind. Not only private residents, but I remember on one occasion three years ago, I was walking back to Transitional Housing, from Uwajimaya, and heard some of the obnoxious booms coming from the football stadium, while it was in full view of me.

The illegality of fireworks aside, it’s ridiculous that people feel the need to set them off for every. damn. touchdown. :-/

jokes aside.. this phenomenon is troubling

the people who are excited about Trump will vote in the next election…

those not so excited about what they see as business as usual probably won’t.

you can’t outnumber them unless we all think preventing someone like Trump from becoming President is important enough to get out there and vote.

Thanks for the video – just lovely. And Wales also gave us Dylan Thomas, Richard Burton, and Ioan Griffud (less talented than Burton, but sure purty! I saw him first in “Horatio Hornblower.)

As for selling and ROI, the problem is that if I ever sold my house, the logical next step wouldd be something in the $700,000 – $800,000 range, and I have little desire to pay that much.

Ah, well, onward. I shouldn’t complain too much; at least I have a roof over my head and I’m living in a beautiful city.

Anyone know why there is a strong sewer smell from Alki up to Genessee Hill? I have noticed this for about 4 days now. ICK!

I’m looking for another mom with a 2-3yo that’s interested in 3hrs a week hands free — she/he watches my 2yo for 3hrs/wk and I watch his/her 2yo for 3hrs/wk. We’re located near Fauntleroy YMCA. Please get in touch and we can talk turkey (i.e. logistics and background). Email me.

I was thinking of starting a rant on here after the massive explosion a few minutes ago, but was glad to see Jo had beat me to it.

This is effing ridiculous. It never ends. My dog is deceased and no longer tormented by this mass stupidity, but my cat was in my lap at the time and left a bloody trail as he went airborne at the sound of the blast. What happened to my right to “peaceful enjoyment” while others freely and openly break the law without consequence?

Ok.. i admit, i am not a hawks fan to start with but i wouldn’t wish defeat on any home team …

if it wasn’t for the way some fans have chosen to celebrate the legion of boom.. with loud booms every time the hawks score :(

one of my new neighbors celebrates every score loudly with fireworks by night and booms by day…

and my dogs whimper and whine and shake and hide under the bed and try to claw their way out.

my vietnam vet neighbor gets so stressed he doesn’t leave the house for days.

no matter how cool or harmless you might think that boom is.. it’s not so cool.

driving neighbors out of their homes on game day and terrorizing animals isn’t an effective way to spread team spirit.

So go ahead and bah humbug and call me a curmudgeon who doesn’t want to let anyone else have fun…

i won’t be here to hear you. I am loading the dog who just had cancer surgery and is facing more into the car with her donut of shame to keep her from reopening the incision and heading up the hill.

and trust me.. you don’t want to know what i will be thinking of those of you who boom away to show your team spirit.

We are new to the area (been here 2 weeks) and I have a Madison 6th grader that needs to get to school. I’ve just started work that requires me to be in Burien at 7am.

I’m looking for an hour in the morning and transport to school/ walk to closest bus stop. This should be short term (about a month), start as soon as school goes back, and we can discuss compensation.

Chloe & I can be reached at 804-638-3688 or via email at Christine.mantegna@gmail.com.

    Thank you!!!
