Pam, I hope you tipped Matt well; sounds like he really went to great lengths to ensure you weren’t disappointed.

Boy, that IS one of those dilemmas, isn’t it JanS? Tastes are so subjective. Personally, I don’t like a CBH that is too chunky; I want to be able to get a bit of everything on my fork, and if it is a version with big, rough chunks, I have a hard time getting a mouthful. In the same vein, if it is too finely chopped, it doesn’t have enough textural and taste definition between ingredients.

But as a cook, I understand it is impossible to please everyone all the time.

Again, though, it was a wonderfully flavored CBH.

@sandybeach: speaking of things you don’t understand and hearsay: “Does this have anything to do with the drunken person who had to be removed from the dugout by the police before a game? The same person who managed to cut them self pretty badly and then proceed to bleed all over the dugout? This didn’t sound like a safe place for the kids to be. I have heard this story from two sources in the last week.” Mark T corrected the record by noting this incident was not at a T-Ball game. I guess my point is that we know what we know, and the only way to find out the truth is talk about it.

You are attacking some opinions about whether the WSLL decision was well thought out. To me and others, it seemed premature, and there can be many reasons for that, including fear of safety, fear of confrontation, racism, elitism, or simply we just don’t want to play anymore. Instead of attacking opinions, let’s find the out the truth. Whatever the reason, there was some agreement to cancel games, so “the actions of the few” became the actions of the group.

We ate there Friday night. Got there about 5:05 p.m. Matt was our waiter and very friendly and enthusiastic – gave us time to look over the menu. While the food was fine, the service was incredibly slow – in fact we waited nearly an hour to get a black and blue burger, cobb salad, chicken fried steak and the meatloaf. After a half an hour or so, Matt recognized it was beyond the time it should take and offered us free pie for after the meal. We never order dessert so that was a nice treat. Food finally arrived and Matt comped the entire meal with his apologies. That was very much appreciated and will make it easier for us to consider giving it another try.

Carson, I totally agree. There’s a walkway from front to back , street to alley, next to our building, and there’s always JITB trash and Safeway stuff to pick up. A few years ago, they’d sit in the carport and drink the cheap stuff they lifted from Safeway (guzzle is more like it)…and then get sick. We kept calling and calling the high school, but it finally ended when one dummy left some papers there with his name on them, and I called the principal – lol.

So, yeah…I’ll take Rich cruising the alley :)

Jan, they tend to use our alley to smoke pot. I think they get the munchies and head over to get lunch at Jack in the Box or Safeway and eat it in your alley! I wouldn’t mind them so much if they actually dropped their trash in a the few dozen garbage cans in the alley they trip over…

JimmyG, you are mistaken on several points. First of all, the City does NOT maintain the alleys, at least not most of them. The alley behind my property is completely unmaintained.

I don’t understand what you mean about “more eyes” preventing crime in this instance. Will the recreational alley cruiser automatically recognize a crime in progress as they scrutinize our back yards – i.e. private spaces? I also don’t understand your reasoning that suggests criminals will enjoy more privacy if unnecessary alley traffic is eliminated.

You are correct that alleys are in the public right-of-way. That does not mean that anything goes, or that residents do not have the right and responsibility to protect their property. As a matter of fact, it falls on the property owner to clean up the messes that the alley cruisers leave as we are legally responsible for maintaining the right of way areas surrounding our property. Recreational “cruising” is even illegal on some public streets, including near Alki.

Again – save the gas, get out of the car and take a walk. You might actually get to know more of your neighbors, and that makes everyone safer.

we had a discussion about the corned beef hash at the soft opening…big chunks vs. itty bitty pieces. I tasted my friend’s, and thought it delish.

Finally made it in last week on a nice, quiet morning. Had the corned-beef hash, which was very delicious. Texturally, I prefer it be a bit chunkier, but the flavor was fantastic. I would certainly order it again.

Breakfast and coffee with tip (I round up from 20%) was $20. A bit expensive for breakfast (at least one without booze) so I won’t eat there frequently, but it was good enough the first time that I will be back.

Loved seeing the Benbow back to her former glory. Seeing it again brought back a lot of hazy memories. I think.

Here are some thoughts on the last couple of posts. I’m from Iowa and that is where I became a vegetarian in the mid 80’s. I was a strict vegetarian for over 20 years and only recently started eating meat. I think both of the last 2 posts have really valid points. First I do think it would be smart for Heartland to add a veggie main dish or two. Why? Because this is Seattle in 2010 and it should not be as hard for a comfort food loving vegetarian to find a nice meal as it was for me in Des Moines (Iowa!) in 1985. Trying to make a meal out of a dollop of mashed potatoes and small side of broccoli gives me flash backs to the real heartland. Having said that, I also think that respecting a given restaurant’s niche is important. I am not going to go to a BBQ place expecting tofu or bacon free greens. When we have food needs or preferences that are not part of the cultural norm of an establishment I think it is incumbent on us to show some deference. I do think Heartland is trying to be somewhat vegetarian friendly as evidenced by offering veggie burgers. Heartland is still quite new and some thoughtful feedback might be very welcome. And while I had a fun experience Friday night, it was far from stellar. As I mentioned, my food was not particularly warm for example. And finally, if anybody wants ideas for veggie comfort food just let me know.

I don’t expect every restaurant to cater to me. You obviously missed the point; which was that the service was bad and that when I did find a suitable option, it was a pathetic offering.

And I wasn’t saying anything negative about the pirates. Only that the crowd made it difficult to attempt contact with a manager.

BB Guest: A car license number is all you need. Most of the time you won’t be able to get info such as owner’s name, address, or pet license #. I had problems with a frequent offender at my workplace. After repeated warnings, they actually pointed out houses and lied about living there, lied about the dog’s name, etc. I reported them by car license # and Animal Control showed up at the correct address and issued a $150+ fine. Turns out the dog wasn’t licensed, either. No problems since, and these people moved a month later.

I don’t want this to come across as rude, because that’s not my intent. The Heartland advertises it’s “comfort food”…midwest recipes…and not exactly vegetarian…all you have to do is read the menu to see that. It’s also not in the same vein as Fresh Bistro, Spring Hill, etc. It is what it is. People have to read the menu, and discern that this is not a place for vegetarians. Not everyone can manipulate their menus to cover all the bases. So please don’t be surprised when you can’t find what you want at Heartland if you’re not a meat eater. It is what it is.

Not every place is going to be everyone’s cup of tea. The post right before yours, Saney, was favorable. And…FWIW…they advertised that the Seafair Pirates would be in the bar that night.

Glad you could find something else close by. It’s nice that the Admiral District is finally coming into it’s own with a variety of restaurants and foods.

last night was my first time there. i cant say that i will be back (not for the food anyway)

the front was busy, so we opted to sit in the benbow for dinner. we had the WORST server. (younger girl, long curly brown hair). so slow and inattentive…and constantly had to “go ask” because she didnt know the answer to questions about the menu.

i am a vegetarian…and there really just isnt much to choose from. i had looked at the menu online. i thought i would try the volcano and just ask to have it without the gravy. (i figured mashed potatoes and green bean casserole without the gravy was do-able, right?). well, apparently (according to our server) they cook it with the gravy inside; and it cannot be altered. okay… i didnt really want a “veggie” burger, because all of their burgers feature some sort of meat on top of meat, so the substitution would just be plain. i asked for a side of mashed potatoes, and a side of “sauteed” broccoli- which was listed with the special. i ended up with a saucer-sized plate (not even a salad sized plate) with a tiny scoop of potatoes, and a wee bit of broccoli (which was by no means sauteed, or seasoned at all). each side was $2.50- which is ridiculous for the amount they gave me.

–and before you ask, no i didnt speak to a manager. they were really busy, and as we were getting our checks, the pirate ladies were “invading” the benbow room….and i really just wanted to find something to eat somewhere.

we ended up at porterhouse…..GREAT service, great prices, great food, great atmosphere…that is where i will be going back to.

Tried Heartland for the first time last night. Loved the Benbow room! We started there for a beer and then opted to not move into the dining room for dinner as it was such a fabulous setting. The food was solid, but not great. Well priced. I had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and sauerkrat. Wished it was hotter. Dining partners had the Volcano and the brat dish. My suggestions are for a relish plate starter, iceberg lettuce & blue cheese wedge, fried pickles, More pork!, walleye or catfish with hush puppies and more wine selections, it also would be great to offer small salads as side dish options. Service was very good. Oh! And the nuttiest part was about 9 o’clock the bar was boarded by pirates who were seriously entertaining. Did anyone else see them out last night?

I hate to tell you this, but “alley cruisers” are not always appreciated. We’ve had a lot of suspicious (non-resident) traffic in our alley that appears to be casing activity, so we (self+neighbors) track license numbers of these vehicles. I also don’t know any homeowner who enjoys extra traffic, reduced privacy, and increased maintenance. Take your grandkids for a walk down the alleys, but please don’t drive.

I have one child at Alki and another entering Alki in the fall. My child loves the school and his parents love the school community.

    1) Yes

    2) Yes and Yes

    3) Yes

    4) No

    5) Yes

    6) Great community, lots of involved parents, PTA funds arts (which includes music, dance, drumming, Master Artist program and Great Composers),all grades have Spanish classes year-round, fantastic gym teacher.

If you have specific questions you could probably talk to the principal, Clover Codd. She has such a passion for kids, and learning and celebrating kids – she really has been an awesome addition to the school this year.

    Greetings WSB forum members,

After being laid off last year and being unemployed for several months I recently started doing consulting work. This means I’m self employed and get paid without having any taxes taken out of my checks. This is new to me and I’m in the process of getting a business license etc. Obviously I don’t have to pay taxes right away but I would like to talk to a knowledgeable professional who could give me advice about what expenses I can write off and what documentation I need to maintain etc. Cost is a consideration for me because my budget is still pretty tight. Anyone out there have any recommendations?

I rarely drive anymore, since I haven’t had a car in over 14.5 years, but I would always slow down, and carefully look both ways, back and forth, at an uncontrolled intersection, and at the ones where the cross traffic had a yield sign.

At the ones where I had a yield sign, I’d damn near come to a stop, until I made sure there was no other traffic.

Of course, there were the occasions where I’d have some jerk right on my tail, throughout all of this, that probably wanted to be doing 30-35 or so, along those residentials with uncontrolled intersections.

OK, now I think I understand what I thought was excessive politeness. My parallel annoyance is people who do the “after you — no, after you,” routine. I stop for someone on the right (or who got there first) and then they stop and then we both look at each other and … Puleeze — if someone does obey the law, give ’em a break and take the blipping right of way. :-)

Not to mention those folks who don’t know the proper way to drive around a traffic circle!

I also stop at uncontrolled intersections and traffic circles because I don’t trust what’s coming. And yes, the lack of understanding on who goes first is maddening.

@sandybeach: I’m not mad at anyone, just curious! Someone sent me the email from Mark after his post, so actually I didn’t have any of the information beforehand. That’s why I posted the thread! Glad to hear from one SW parent-would love to hear the perspective of a WS parent. From an outsider, it does seem elitist to cancel all the games, but I’m willing to admit I could be wrong! :)

Actually, someone forwarded me an email from Mark in which he explained that 3 out of the 4 WS teams elected not to play SW. But let’s assume it’s only 2: There are 6 teams total-4 WS and 2 SW. 1 WS and 1 SW team argued. Why would the other WS team vote to not play against the 1 SW team, and why would both of the WS teams vote not to play against the other SW team that wasn’t even involved in the argument? Do you see how it all seems a bit reactionary? And it is bette to be safe than sorry, but safe from what? The kids aren’t getting hurt. As long as the parents keep quiet and settle their differences maturely, then what’s the big deal? Why is it so hard? I think the SW and WS leagues acted prematurely by canceling those games.

It seems like most commenters are blowing this out of proportion, as someone “in the know” stated: two of the four WSLL league teams have decided to withdraw from playing the second scheduled game against the SWLL team.

This means that two of the four WSLL teams are STILL going to play against the particular SWLL team, and no games against other SWLL teams are being cancelled by any of the WSLL teams.

Personally, I’ve seen enough news stories about bad behavior by parents at youth sporting events that I wouldn’t want my kids to attend a game where the parents are already known to be combative. It can take just a split second by a single person to cause permanent trauma for all the kids (on both teams). And having someone “banned” from the field is going to mean what…having police there? Do we really want our kids to be playing on a field watched by armed guards?

People can SAY that parents SHOULD behave better, but just saying it doesn’t make it so. Better safe than sorry, IMHO.
