Ditto the above! Fits All Alterations is great and very affordable. Just make sure you’re carrying cash or a checkbook, though, when you go to pay as I don’t believe she takes credit cards.

It’s a misdemeanor to occupy more than one seat on the bus, or to interfere “in any way” with use of the service, or to hinder or prevent access to any transit property, including seats. (Also, it’s not permissible to bring a package on the bus that would take up a seat if doing so would displace passengers.) Not that I want to see anyone cited, of course, but no one is allowed to deny another person’s access to a seat. There’s no exception, so far as I can tell, in the Metro Code of Conduct for people who don’t feel safe having someone else in the adjacent seat.

JoB: Most of your last post was incomprehensible to me, especially the last paragraph. HUH???

I ride the bus for all the reasons you described. The morning express bus seldom has passengers that I would consider so suspect that a private seat is required for protection, and yet this is the time the seat-hogging phenomenon is most apparent. These hogs are probably not nursing some deep psychic hurt that prohibits them from exercising reasonable judgment and/or courtesy. They’re just rude.

You should have a reasonable ‘entitlement’ to feel safe from being attacked on the bus, although there is no guarantee of that. Hogging the seat next to you does not provide that safety. Realistically, you’re in more danger from someone sitting behind you than one next to you, not to mention the guy with the hacking H1-N1 cough across the aisle.

Charlabob, there is nothing bad about your behavior. It is reasonable to place your bag on the seat if the bus is virtually empty. If people are getting on and visibly scanning for diminishing seats, I’d say it’s time to move your stuff. Sounds like you’re just exercising that rarity – common sense.

Rant to the guy in the black or gray truck who WATCHED his dog poop on the 30 yard line of the new turf field, got in his truck and drove away. Do you know how many people play on that field every day? Clean up after your dog.

    #594760

Today at the Hiawatha Turf Field, I watched a man let his larger black dog go #2 right on the FIELD! When I went in to tell the man at the desk, he went looking for the guy and told me that he believes it might be the same guy who did it a few months ago.

People, it is against the law to have your dog, leash or not on an athletic field. And on top of that, have the nerve to NOT clean up after your dog? That guy is giving good dog owners a bad name.

According to the man at the center, the guy drives a black or gray truck, parks in the high school parking lot and has a larger black dog. He has a video of the guy doing it.

some people have no choice but public transportation. some people choose public transportation for the environmental good of all.

either way.. they should be entitled to feel safe while riding the bus.

the recent attack on a metro driver illustrates the need for each person to do what they feel they need to do to feel safe.

yes.. i know there are seat hogs.. who by the way have to sit as close to the door as they can get… but there are also people who are simply taking care of themselves.

If you believe the worst about people.. you have to be willing for them to believe the worst about you.. and in some cultures that means attack before you are attacked…not a good thing to wish upon yourself.

Yes, and judging sidewalk etiquette, many never learned to keep right either. Personally, I think a lot of social discourtesy trickles down from the ‘hippy generation’ who felt they had to break through rules and social norms to express themselves with complete, unfettered freedom. Yield to others on a sidewalk? Leash the dog? Follow traffic rules? Don’t cramp my style, man, you’re such a facist, loosen up, it’s a free country! I notice a lot more of this behavior around Seattle than any other city I’ve been too. It could also just be that it’s a city that is increasing population faster than it can adjust. Still, you have to wonder about people who were raised with the attitude ‘what’s the problem? they can just go around ME.(because my right to enjoy myself trumps being considerate).

It is absolutely ridiculous to suggest that paying bus patrons should have to seek out any and all vacant seats before daring to ask some seat hog to move their bag. Lately when I ride the bus, every single section contains one person and a separate seat for their bag.

This is public transportation, not a private limo service with reserved seating. If you feel so threatened or unsafe at the prospect of having anyone sit next to you, then you should not be on the bus at all. It is not the responsibility of other riders to intuit your deepest fears or needs. There is no earthly reason why I, or anyone, should have to clamber to the back of the bus and sit with the drunks just because there happens to be one empty seat back there.

Frankly, my spirit feels violated every time I ride Metro, and I am actually hyper-vigilant of space and safety issues. But I don’t have such an inflated sense of entitlement that I feel justified in creating my own private “zone”.

Yeah, I’m not going to apologize for keeping myself safe and comfortable. If there are no other seats available, I ALWAYS move my bag so its not like I’m EVER taking a seat from someone who needs it. Happy for you that you were able to get past it anonyme, but I’m not quite 100% there yet.

This just in from a very high ranking person in a Puget Sound clean water organization who has been helping us on these issues — “I met with Christy True, and I have spoken to some other King County staff as well, and their intention is to work with the community, share information, set up a stakeholder committee, etc. So this is good news.”

Hopefully, this will pan out as indicated. You never know for sure until you see the action, as they say.

i was talking about violation of the spirit…

some are affected more than others by the same event.

while you may not feel your safety threatened unless someone is drunk or disorderly… we are still talking about perceptions here.

as long as there are other seats available.. you are not blocking a seat by creating your own personal safety zone.

As you pointed out.. none of us can expect much assistance from the bus driver or other passengers on a crowded bus. It is up to the individual to do what they can to protect themselves..

no matter how rude others think they are being.

there is a huge level of discomfort between unsavory and violation… violation is ample justification for maintaining a safe space.

if bags are blocking the last seat on the bus… then you have to either move them or get up and take your bags with you…

but up to that point.. safety trumps righteous indignation.

Another rant: Bus stop at 3rd and Pike (West Seattle related b/c that’s where you catch the 54/55). I’m so sick of all the stupid thugs hanging around that block. Today while waiting for the bus, some kid got the crap beat out of him, while people just STOOD THERE WATCHING. I was in shock. There are normally two police officers there (thank you thugs for making the tax payers employ two full time workers because you feel the need to make our streets unsafe) but not today. So sick of feeling unsafe around that area.

Here’s a little rant … Please share the sidewalk. Do not walk two or three or four abreast, especially when you see another person or persons walking toward you. Or, if you hear people coming up behind you.

Goodness gracious folks – didn’t your parents ever teach you anything about good manners and being considerate of others?

Please make room. That means walking single file until after you pass the other person. Really, its quite easy to do – it won’t take a lot of effort on your part.

It is the little considerate things we do that make neighborhoods so much more pleasant for everyone.

First of all, my post is not about being anti-driver…

Just a thought: what if all those drivers did not know that the hand signals (used by this bicyclist) have actual meaning?

From what I understand (being a non-driver), Washington state does not require drivers to take the written driver’s test upon renewal of his/her license. Which makes me wonder if this is a huge part of why some drivers seem so oblivious or unaware of the rules of the road… Perhaps the last time they actually thoroughly read the Washington Driver Guide was when he/she got his/her license (that could be 5, 10, 15, 20++ years ago).

I also wonder: Since WA state does require drivers to take the written test every time someone re-news their license… is this directly related to so many more “bad” drivers on the road? “Bad” drivers, for example: not signaling nor looking (for oncoming traffic, pedestrians, bicycles), when making turns or lane changes; the proper use of hazard lights; speeding in school zones; driving over the posted speed limit; running yellow/red lights; parking violations; etc.

If you take a can of food to Cafe Osita on Saturday(5/8), they will give you 50 cents off a coffee drink AND an anonymous donor will donate 50 cents for each donation brought in. They close at 3 pm…all part of the letter carrier’s food drive.

CMP you are correct. The center lane can be used to give the vehicle (cyclist) in this case safe passing clearance. And most drivers are quite good about doing this. However it’s that one driver who is so impatient and unaware that could kill/maim/injure someone that is the problem.

Todd if this were a case in which I was in a bike lane or riding in the adjacent traffic lane, yes, I would have to yield to traffic before making a leftwards movement. However, this is a sharrowed lane, meaning it’s a lane shared by both cyclists and motorists.

And if the motorist is overtaking a cyclist (or other slow moving vehicle) the passing motorist must exercise due care in passing slower vehicle on the left per SMC 11.53.200. In addition SMC 11.53.210 places limitations of passing on left; one cannot legally pass another vehicle on the left unless the pass can be made without interfering with the operation of any traffic approaching from the opposite direction or any traffic overtaken. In this case, I was the traffic that was overtaken, with my “turn signal (i.e. arm out signalling a left move)” on. Passing motorists were indeed interfering with my ability to operate my vehicle (a bicycle) in the lane. Would you pass a car on the left if the left turn signal was on and the vehicle was slowing down in front of you?

Alki Cafe was my first stop in Seattle after driving out from Chicago 15 years ago. In those early years we stopped in often for breakfast, particularly for the incredible salmon corn cakes that were on the menu at the time. For some reason the salmon corn cakes dropped off the menu some years ago. It would be awesome if you could resurrect this sublime breakfast treat.

I think it’s the same problem that causes Washingtonians to have difficulty understanding “slower traffic keep right” or “keep right except to pass” on the freeway.

We loooooooove Alki Cafe. I would assume dinner and HH/drinks would be a huge hit down on Alki for the summer. Even if you can’t get a full dinner menu going right away, people (us) love to sit outside and have a drink. Best of luck to you.

Yes, yes, yes to Super Fun Happy Dog! Our dog Miss Daisy Cakes goes there once a week for daycare and only boards there. Kimerley’s Shankly is her boy toy LOL.

Yes, you have to go out there for an evaluation but Robert and Tiffany are amazing. Completely worth it. I really couldn’t imagine trusting anyone else with her.

Oh and Kimberley, Daisy just looked at me on her bed when I tried to get her up after coming home Wednesday. Her and Shankly had a romping good time. Completely tuckered out! :)

My son played the position of catcher for many years. As I recall, even a rudimentary catcher position wasn’t used until coach pitch (around age 7) and even then it was mainly to retrieve balls. Full-contact, protecting the plate moves have no place on the field until the kids have learned to safely slide into home plate (not at 5 or 6!). Even then, the catcher should aim for the players CHEST not the face. I seem to remember my son’s first “out at home” was when he was about 9 years old, and this was still a rare “less than a dozen times a season league-wide” thing. This incident, as explained above, is wrong on SO many levels. It is sad to hear.
