I think one reason that the implementation of a state income tax has been stymied in our state is that it is always presented as an additional tax. As long as there is such an exorbitant sales tax in place, that vote will never pass. The bill needs to be written so that the sales tax is simultaneously either greatly reduced or eliminated, as in Oregon.

It’s nice that Betty has found an alter ego in William – or is he just one of her ‘multiples’? Is there a special club that teaches this writing style?

i attended a few post-9/11 sonics games at key arena. i sat through every performance of the national anthem that i witnessed there. i wore my hat, too.

what can i say? i was pissed off at our country’s ridiculous and terrified policy of bombing first and asking questions later. i was, at times, ashamed to be american; especially during such frivolous first-world events as corporate basketball games.

during those anthems, i remember fully expecting some patriotic scoundrel to engage me at any moment for my lack of reverence to the country, the troops, george bush, israel, iraq, exxon, howard schultz, or whatever else we were supposed to be blindly genuflecting for. i felt alone and exposed. i think my wife stood, but she doesn’t judge me. and even if she did stand, she fully understood my frustration.

and i was just some nobody in the seattle rank and file who got comp’ed or free tickets. (gary payton was gone, so my heart really wasn’t in it anyway.)

unlike me, though, kaepernick is a millionaire. as frivolous as his job is, he has celebrity status. if he chooses to use that as a means of speaking to an issue that he cares about, then i applaud him for opening national dialogue.

like it or not, OP, we are talking about it.

and i know i’m not following the OP’s arbitrary rules of engagement, but you’ll have to endure that from time to time in free western societies – and on other people’s servers, no less.

Betty: You might be living in such a bubble you do not hear your own sound cloud: Beast, Predator, Comrade Bernie…. all of which undermines any point you might be trying to make. In this country, we have Social Security, not Comrade Security or Communist Security. It’s social security. Bernie is a socialist which is a belief that we need to balance out unbridled capitalism. Our current system is like a game of monopoly where, in a short time from now, just a few folks will own everything. Just like the game. The solution is to do what we did in the 1960’s when Comrade Eisenhower was president and raise the taxes on the top tier. Comrade Nixon followed in his footsteps and kept the same tax rate which was as high as 91% for some people. Despite our socialist rulers at that time, we enjoyed a general prosperity unseen in any other country.

Since you can’t speak of Hillary in anything but derisive terms, perhaps you could provide some positive reasons for voting for Trump? I haven’t yet heard any.

yet another astroturf organization, funded by large corporations interested in making the most money they can before the world collapses. Example of one of their board members:

Meanwhile, the Northwest Passage is now open for the first time to cruise ships. West Virginia experiences “1000 year flooding” and Greenland is starting to turn green.

Yes, there have been violent protesters on both sides but you know what the difference is?
The Dems denounce the violence and call out their constituency that commit the acts.
Regardless of that, even though the DNC and everyone running on the platform are against the violence from their supporters the RNC are complete hypocrites on the matter.

1st: the stock market is not indicative of the health of a nation or its economy there are far more indicators. It’s indicative of the stock market and trading.

2nd: the tendency to attack “liberals” rather than their ideals and on a factual basis rather than an emotional basis makes it easy to dismiss their ranting.

Let me lay some knowledge on ya. Democratic presidents, with few exceptions, have left the country in better condition than republicans. To stick with recent history, Clinton and Obama lowered the deficit (current reporting is that Obama has managed to lower the deficit by more that a 1 trillion dollars from a little more than 1.4T to 400Bn [CBO]. Clinton shrunk to -$127Bn, that’s a 127Bn surplus, which Bush then used to write checks to all of us taxpayers prior to the deficit and debt plummeting to the lowest level ever faster than ever. Reagan and Bush I increased the deficit more than any president in histroy up until that point en toto. Additionally, Reagan, that paragon of republican presidents, RAISED taxes, as did Bush I.

As for Obamacare (also known as the Affordable Care Act) this plan was originally proposed by Nixon, then Bob Dole prior to it being put in place by Obama and a democratic congress. Keep in mind that this plan requires citizens to purchase health insurance (not healthcare) from private for profit companies. Talk about a boon to the insurance industry!

Regarding the violence and other campaign shenanigans: This violence is perpetrated by individuals, not campaigns. That said, Trump is the only one that employs explicitly violent rhetoric and encourages acts of violence by members of his audience against protesters. I’ve not heard Hillary or Bernie make similar statements and Ipay close attention to these elections. While I’m sick unto death of this election as it’s been going on for about 100 years, I’ve only heard patently ridiculous statements from Trump. As to investigations for criminal activity Hillary and Trump are both being heavily investigated.

Hi! I worked as a vet tech for several years and do know it can be difficult to get information as clinics are very busy.
It is true that finding experience when you are under 18 can be difficult. I would draft out a letter and say exactly what you posted here, you are in the running-start program and are interested in anything they can help you with, job shadowing, interviews, and kennel cleaning (I know the clinic I worked at, we had a volunteer kennel cleaner that was in high school). Are you interested in exotics, emergency or large animal (horses and farm) medicine? Mention this! If there is a particular field you are interested in, find out which clinics in the area specialize in that area, it’s okay if you don’t know yet, ask for the experience anyway.
Call the various vet clinics in the area and find out who their head or lead veterinarian is, and write the letter to them.
As angelscrest suggested, call a few of the rescue groups and ask about volunteer positions. I currently volunteer for one and it fills my need for helping animals as I am not currently working at a clinic.
Congratulations on your chosen career path, and I wish you the best of luck, it is very rewarding.

    More about Pecos Pit Bar-B-Que:

Pecos Pit Bar-B-Que Restaurants trace their roots to 1980 when Ron & Debra Wise opened Pecos Pit Bar-B-Que in Seattle, WA on 1st Avenue South. They served two essential ingredients to their customers, warm welcomes and smoked meats. Their delicious alder smoked, slow roasted beef and pork soon became legendary. Their habit-forming slow cooked sandwiches with piles of meat and an addicting sauce became wildly acclaimed. The sauce alone was a real point of distinction, separating those who stood in line by how daring they would be. “Mild” for those sanely enjoying the meat, “Medium”, which to most is adventurously hot, and “Hot” for those who don’t mind their hair on fire. Three heats, only one sauce. It became known as “The Only Sauce”. Pecos Pit humbly began in an old open-air gas station–stand in line in rain or shine or don’t bother. And line up they did. Devoted men and women in everything from hard hats to suits have come for years to get their Pecos fix. This humble beginning started a Northwest born obsession for barbeque that Seattleites have never gotten over, nor have those who visited.

    Pecos Pit Opens 2nd location:

So now after 36 years of having a single Pecos Pit Bar-B-Que location, Ron and Debra Wise have teamed up with Gerry Kingen to share their iconic Seattle jewel with the rest of the world, starting with West Seattle this coming spring It will open at the corner of 35th Ave SW and Fauntleroy Way SW in the former Yasuko’s Teriyaki location, across from Taco Time. The West Seattle location will feature indoor seating, and an outdoor deck as well as a handy drive through. The new Pecos locations will serve the same famous Pecos Pit BBQ found on 1st Avenue for decades, along with some new habit forming options. Offerings include our traditional pork, beef, and chicken sandwiches in a decidedly sloppy style, plus beef brisket, and hot links, with prices ranging from $7.75 to $9.50. You can add hot links; just say “spike it”, as well as bleu cheese, sharp cheddar, smoked bacon, cole slaw, pickles, extras sauce and onions. New variations include stuffed smoked potatoes (sweet or russet) for around $8, and a “Walkabouts Bowl” filled with the meat of your choice plus cheese, cold slaw and sauce. We serve healthy salads made with your choice of smoked meat, or have it veggie style, with baby kale, olives, tomatoes, cowboy caviar, cheddar cheese, and blue cheese or ranch dressing.
You can even buy bulk, smoked meats including Pecos pork, beef brisket, turkey legs, and smoked chicken ranging from $7.95 to $14.95 per pound. Word has it that the rum runners are hard at work vying for moonshine and libation offerings. Stand by for whispers on this one.
Kingen is planning on opening a number of company owned locations locally and will expand nationally to share our delicious Pecos Pit Bar-B-Que with hungry customers across the country.

captainDave, I apparently didn’t “submit” an earlier reply to your post 835427 properly so I’ll try again.
I note that WA is #48 in access to mental health services, so I believe the opportunities abound for improving that state of affairs, including community based home, half-way and outpatient services. The WA Supreme Court has focussed on measures to end the “boarding” of patients waiting for inpatient beds and while I’m sure that’s a problem needing attention, I also suspect that more outpatient programs would likely reduce the incidence of acute crises.

It’s evident the need for some degree of integration of information concerning resources is necessary, if not actual coordination between them (which I realize would be very difficult to accomplish). That’s not intended to imply that the public funding for mental health services would be sufficient if it was only managed better. I think it’s an area that’s simply not adequately funded and that includes via private insurance which strongly limits reimbursement for mental health services. I think that all has a net effect of constraining entrepreneurial opportunities.

To your concern about methadone as an intervention for heroin addiction, I was struck by the use of suboxone in lieu of methadone in the PBS Frontline documentary. I don’t think it’s generic, however, so the whole cost benefit issue would have to be addressed to deploy it widely in public mental health/drug treatment programs.

JoB: I did not say that Trump was the perfect candidate. He would have no chance if our political establishment in both parties did their jobs in accordance to their respective oaths of office.

But here we are: Nearly 20 trillion in debt, highest number of people on welfare, lowest number of full time real jobs in 30 years, stagnate wages, a mass exodus of companies fleeing from the highest corporate taxes in the world, lowest number of new business start ups ever recorded since they started counting, highest number of destitute homeless since the depression… etc. etc.

Trump’s major appeal is jobs, security and his apparent lack of obligation owed to the corrupt unelected power centers who have controlled our politics for decades. It does not take a rocket scientist to know that reducing monopolistic regulatory barriers and taxes will restore the productive side of our economy.

Who are the fools here? Obama got elected on the promises of free stuff on the credit of people who haven’t even been born yet while he strangles the middle class out of existence. Hillary vows to continue the same program while the country is on the verge of another economic collapse.

JanS: You really need to open the scope of your reading to include more than just the left leaning news sources. You will find that facts are twisted to fit narratives on both sides more today than anytime in recent history. Data and logic matter, otherwise its like trying to play checkers in a tri-level chess tournament.

Digging, transporting, and transplanting any tree of that size will cost several thousand dollars – are you ready to pay that much? The root ball alone will weigh several hundred pounds. There are a couple of outfits who do that kind of work, ‘Big Trees’ in Snohomish is one that comes to mind. I love your idea of rescuing a tree (I do it all the time!) but be prepared to pay for it. I also would not recommend such a transplant much past March – or preferably, wait until fall.

Alternatively, you could choose a slightly smaller tree that grows really fast. There are a number of these. Pawlonia (‘Empress’) trees grow extremely fast, are relatively rare around here, and have the large-leafed, spreading canopied, exotic look of your former locust.

Best of luck, and I hope someone volunteers a tree for you.

@ Ws98116: To be frank is to be direct.

In none of my posts did I let bad behavior off the hook. What I DID say is that the over the top reaction to the topic at hand is at issue. There are all sorts of ways to deal with this issue, but for you it is clearly a veritable assault on your person. To me, it is something I find to be irritating but not something that cause me to rupture an organ. It has nothing to do with having a dog so much as what can I really do about it? I can bring my can in. If there happens to be poop in it I put it in the small bin outside of my garage, where I place the bag from my yard collections, and forget about it. I can’t collar every scofflaw. If you read my first post, I have returned said abandoned poop to the rightful owner.

As to dogs being filthy and parasitic; it’s simply not accurate. Cat’s on the other hand, wander the neighborhood and crap in your garden, bury it and let you dig in it, subjecting you to their parasites, which are much more numerous and to toxoplasmosis, which is incredibly harmful. Not to mention that there are cats EVERYWHERE.

@Valvashon: First of all, yes, I think fishing a poop bag out of your garbage bin and then flinging it in the street is absolutely insane. Perhaps not clinically but figuratively. As to my comment that you’d cut a b**** well, perhaps that was a bit of humor…or would you? You live in a neighborhood with a lot of dogs and dog walkers. Elimination functions happen and the vast majority of people deal with it appropriately. I’m sorry that the scofflaws make you feel that you need to police you garbage can so scrupulously.

redblack: You apparently have not tried to start a business in Seattle lately. I have first hand experience doing business here for over 30 years. I have no problem paying taxes and fees when they are due–as I always have. I have a big problem with the lawless arbitrary hostility I have personally experienced in the last several years from Seattle finance and licensing officials. If Seattle is so economically diverse, why is OED spending our tax money in a vain attempt to reduce the mass exodus of traditional businesses?

Also, JFK was not a big fan of collectivism since he was fighting against communism. I think you are misunderstanding his statement. JFK was a proponent of private enterprise and capitalism. He wanted to motivate American workers and businessmen to innovate and competitively out produce the rest of the world.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usury

Usury (in the original sense of any interest) was at times denounced by a number of religious leaders and philosophers in the ancient world, including Moses,[22] Plato, Aristotle, Cato, Cicero, Seneca,[23] Aquinas,[24] Muhammad,[25] Jesus,[26] Philo[citation needed] and Gautama Buddha.[27] For example, Cato said:

“And what do you think of usury?”—”What do you think of murder?”

Interest of any kind is forbidden in Islam. As such, specialized codes of banking have developed to cater to investors wishing to obey Qur’anic law. (See Islamic banking)

As the Jews were ostracized from most professions by local rulers, the church and the guilds, they were pushed into marginal occupations considered socially inferior, such as tax and rent collecting and moneylending. Natural tensions between creditors and debtors were added to social, political, religious, and economic strains.[28]

…financial oppression of Jews tended to occur in areas where they were most disliked, and if Jews reacted by concentrating on moneylending to non-Jews, the unpopularity—and so, of course, the pressure—would increase. Thus the Jews became an element in a vicious circle. The Christians, on the basis of the Biblical rulings, condemned interest-taking absolutely, and from 1179 those who practiced it were excommunicated. Catholic autocrats frequently imposed the harshest financial burdens on the Jews. The Jews reacted by engaging in the one business where Christian laws actually discriminated in their favor, and became identified with the hated trade of moneylending.[29]

That same Old Testament you wingnuts use to pick and choose your bigotry from had this to say:

Exodus 22:24 (25)—If thou lend money to any of My people, even to the poor with thee, thou shalt not be to him as a creditor; neither shall ye lay upon him interest.

Leviticus 25:36— Take thou no interest of him or increase; but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee.

Leviticus 25:37— Thou shalt not give him thy money upon interest, nor give him thy victuals for increase.

Deuteronomy 23:20 (19)—Thou shalt not lend upon interest to thy brother: interest of money, interest of victuals, interest of any thing that is lent upon interest.

Deuteronomy 23:21 (20)—Unto a foreigner thou mayest lend upon interest; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon interest; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou puttest thy hand unto, in the land whither thou goest in to possess it.

Ezekiel 18:17—that hath withdrawn his hand from the poor, that hath not received interest nor increase, hath executed Mine ordinances, hath walked in My statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

Psalm 15:5—He that putteth not out his money on interest, nor taketh a bribe against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

    Christianity

Christ drives the Usurers out of the Temple, a woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder in Passionary of Christ and Antichrist.[33]

The New Testament contains references to usury, notably in the Parable of the talents:

“Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest..”

    — Matthew 25:27

“…Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow. Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?”

    — Luke 19:22-23

The following scriptures teach about lending:

“Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”

    — Matthew 5:42

“And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.”

    — Luke 6:34-35

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

    — Luke 6:38

Shall we mention all the ethnic groups over the years which have not been allowed to borrow money or to buy homes outside of ethnic enclaves? Many of us live in one now. So which ethnic minority were your ancestors Mrtrollseattle? Irish? Italian? French?

I thank all of you who bother to apply facts to wingnuts even though their factual immune system will discard them in the very next troll post.

smitty: didn’t paul schell light the aurora bridge for a while? i lived in north QA whenever that was, and it was pretty cool.

turns out that the energy costs were exorbitant, though. so it only lasted a couple of weeks.

the jeanette williams memorial bridge is a beautiful structure, IMHO, and i think lighting it would make the skyline really striking at night.

and with new fiber optic and LED technology, maybe costs wouldn’t be so bad.

Anyone else notice how many new people are working at the Junction QFC? I asked someone there if there had been an exodus or just a new influx and he said “a little bit of both.” The employees I used to recognize there mostly seem to be gone. Wonder what went down…?

if you want to step into the Way Back Time Machine, CNN did a special on the 60’s last year; I’m sure it’s available on-line somewhere, but here’s a photo montage:

for you all young-uns … CNN is airing a special on the 70’s on June 11th at 9 pm

As for the music of my childhood, I’m satisfied with YouTube (home of videos that disappear due to ‘copyright violations’) and the occasional Time-Life late night infomercial on hippie music.

    * WARNING! Richard Nixon, the president conservatives prefer to forget, is mentioned. Proceed at your own risk!
