You could also check out some of the Vancouver/Victoria ferry services! A beautiful, relaxing way to make that commute if you ask me and it’s not exorbitantly expensive. Cheaper than a flight, cab, Lyft, etc but more expensive than a greyhound.

I really don’t understand why we need to bring animals from CA for adoption when we have so many here. I also think $500 is exorbitant.

JoB, You described Trump’s actions and reactions within government agencies then said perhaps it’s time to examine the big lie.

OK. The biggest lie is that the Democratic Party has advanced policies that support working people. Sorry, the Democratic Party has been party to successive implementation of neoliberal assaults on middle income earners for decades. That’s why so many Democrats voted for Trump and also why so many Democrats didn’t vote.

The statement “there was no difference between the democratic and republican parties” while perhaps uttered frequently misses what I think is the key underlying perception in the electorate—-both parties have neglected the welfare of ordinary working Americans repeatedly.

I suspect that resistance may well be essential to forging real policies focused on real goals that Americans will feel are worth supporting. We’ll see how Jaxon Ravens fares today at the party gathering in Olympia to see how strong the move is to reform the party and reverse the backsliding that has been going on in WA. Otherwise, I think all opportunities for people to resist Trump’s takeover of the government are very important.

yes…I remember lying on my cot in my barracks outside of Frankfurt, Germany, in 1974, listening to Richard Nixon when he resigned, over Voice of America. Now it will simply be a way of hiding the truth, the real world, and will be a propaganda machine. Heartbreaking, everything that is going on.

PLS: You seem to justify leftist violence by concluding that Trump supporters would be violent if Hillary had won. What is your evidence of this? Leftist regimes throughout history have consistently resorted to violence against their conservative counterparts. Where was all the widespread right-wing violence when Obama was elected twice? If Hillary got elected, there probably would have been a mass exodus of political refugees from the US as the left would have immediately started cracking down on dissidents–starting with curtailing the “alternative media” as proposed by Hillary.

Many of our ancestors came to the US escaping leftist totalitarianism in other parts of the world. My family escaped the oppression of the Ottoman Empire. When the left dominates, most people don’t fight, they just leave. That’s why Seattle no longer reflects the rest of the US. There has been a mass exodus of conservatives out of the City over the last several decades because of leftist domination in our bureaucracy. With only 8% of the local vote going to Trump, Seattle is only second to Detroit and DC in leftist unity. That fact alone should raise red flags for future economic stability.

There won’t be any common ground between the progressive left and the rest of America because its core tenants are based on a completely opposing ideology. Fortunately, the vast majority of people don’t really support the ultimate goal of socialism. Over time, you will find a diminishing contingent of support for the left as people are exposed to the truth–thanks to the efforts of non-leftist media.

RedBlack: When a person believes that workers should collectively own and control the means of production through centralized government, they are advocating marxism. All marxists are socialists. “What looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, is probably is a duck.”

do you feel like i do?

i know it’s a free market economy, and that real estate and rents are exorbitant here. and that everyone with property is looking to cash out and retire.

all of that aside, we, as a community, are damned lucky to have a business like west seattle produce.

(a nod to their neighbors, too. with a goodwill drop and a consignment store, it’s like the sustainability corner there at fauntleroy and alaska.)

does anyone know who owns that land? is it still a huling?

in my humble opinion, whoever owns that tract should invest in cultivating that vibe. maybe sexy it up a bit. maybe ask for volunteer planning and construction to give it a little more curb appeal. encourage arts, crafts, beer brewing, whatever. maybe go up with a couple floors of open loft businesses. maybe some rooftop gardening. outdoor spaces. evening wine tastings. chocuterie (sp?). baking. locally produced stuff. a destination. give whole foods some real competition.

i think it would be smart business to keep and improve that vibe. we don’t need any more corporate retail.

PCC, although I look forward to the opening of Whole Foods and their lower prices. Yes, you read that correctly; I do a lot of comparison shopping, and WF is extremely competitive – especially with their house brand merchandise. WF also has great produce at reasonable prices. Occasionally I enjoy a visit to Roxbury Safeway for great prices on Earth Balance, Morningstar Farms – and Snoqualmie ice cream! I also appreciate the lack of pretension at that store; just ordinary folks buyin’ some groceries. TJ’s and Met Market are too far north for me (transpo challenges). Thriftway is exorbitantly overpriced, with the exception of their weekly sales on snacks like Kettle chips.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Westwood QFC had to close due to the criminal invasion. The poor employees and security guard can’t even keep up with the constant theft, and based on what I’ve seen happening at the salad bar and bulk bins I would never touch anything from either one.

JTB, your recipe for human survival is dependent on some unlikely scenarios. Do you really see a global consensus on priorities happening any time soon, when we have world leaders who are pro-fossil fuel climate deniers? Do you see humans voluntarily agreeing to breed less? Do you see humans agreeing on…anything? Human nature has changed little since we stopped dragging our knuckles on the ground. I see little chance that such a sea change would take place in the minute window of time we may have left to save ourselves. I realize this sounds grim, but I’m a pragmatist.

Even Hawking concedes that it is unlikely we can make the technological breakthroughs that would make it possible for colonization of another planet before this one collapse. Meanwhile, the most useful technology would be a way to create new, clean water. There’s a reason the world’s biggest investors (including Exxon) have bought up rights to pretty much every drop of water on Earth.

anoyme, it seems to me your observation is correct mostly to the degree one accepts the distribution of natural and capital resources as dictated by the need for private profit and capital accumulation. The rise of despots is made possible and even facilitated by capitalist political allies. Consider the autocrats throughout the Middle East who were installed by British, French, and American interests following WWI or a number of tyrants in Africa who have been supported by Exxon Mobil in order to assure its grip on oil supplies.
While I accept the roll of money in commerce, I think we (society) have been subject to arbitrary assumptions and rules about the nature of money that benefit private capital and preclude or constrain a more productive and equitable use of it. If government through active and/or regulatory action were able to direct economically and socially more productive use of money than what is taking place under finance capitalism, the global economy would undoubtedly be in a much stronger position that its precarious current state. That would undoubtredly result in a more equitable distribution of income and goods, including good necessary to sustain life such as food. Similarly we’ve already have ample evidence that some goods and services such as healthcare and education, fair better for society as a whole when seen as natural monopolies and subject to public management.

there is no such thing as clean coal, because it’s not economically viable. by the time you process it enough to be “clean,” the cost per kwh becomes exorbitant to producers and consumers. and you still have to level hills and valleys to get it. ever been to west virginia?

besides, here in WA, over 80% of our power is hydroelectric. yes, i know that dams are destructive to watersheds and their ecosystems. but they don’t emit poison.

and i would point out that we are importing less oil than we have since carter was president. obama’s “all of the above” energy policy is working well enough… for a country that has never had an effective energy policy.

letting big oil write their own rules doesn’t count as energy policy.

Sorry guys… I’m not going to “let it go” in any sense of the word, I’m OK with Jo continuing the verbal firing squads and I will NOT be part of the blame sharing. I saw the out-of-control train coming and did everything this one little citizen could think of to stop it. I am not part of the “big bucks” class and don’t have a lick of political power but will tell you one thing I firmly see and believe right now: This election was NOT won fair and square, as evidenced by the latest reporting by our intelligence agencies. A foreign government had influence here and this troubles me more than anything, except for the fact that it was all kept quiet until after the election, except for Senator Feinstein who was poo-poo’d and ignored. And now the Exon guy is being considered for Secretary of State who did major business with Russia and has medals of friendship from Putin himself? Move on people, nothing to see here? I don’t think so!!

A recount is called for in some states because of concern about the chances of tampering in our election and Trump sends in attorneys to stop it? REALLY? A patriot concerned about his country would say something like: Sure, go ahead. It’s important that we have faith in our election system and I support any effort to prove to the American people that our system is sound. But noooo… this President-elect has to fight it tooth and nail. Something smells here… smells real bad and I will not personally move on until the rot is exposed.

well, cD, your comment has me stumped; prithee share what ‘tax concessions and special government favors’ Amazon gets from any federal, state or local government and write a 100 word essay on how those ‘favors’ compare to T rump’s giveaway to Carrier. For extra credit, substitute ‘Exxon’ for ‘Amazon’ in your post and write a 1,000 word essay on corporate welfare. For a bonus, try actually answering the question I asked (how did a threatened 35% tariff morph into $7mil in state tax credits?) Note that I was not objecting to the giveaway; I was asking how a penalty turned into a gift. Oh wait, this happened in TrumPenceland where there are no facts and something is true only as long as it takes for the Emperor to say something else … never mind.

nice job on slyly slipping in the snarky Muslim reference; you have learned well. my ‘liberal mecca’ (wink, wink; nudge, nudge) is just fine without Amazon, thanks for asking. I’ve never shopped there and never will; absolutely hate their website even though they have an amazing selection of, ahem, adult products.

What i find most disheartening is that people of color, the descendants of non-white immigrants, gays, women and a host of other people who don’t look like “patriots” think they should are being harassed on our streets by people who think they have a perfect right to “put them in their place”… mostly verbally but sometimes what they say and do really crosses the line into aggressive physical behavior…

and we are dissecting this election as though it was any other…
just another after game breakdown of the strategies without any attention at all to the outcome.

I honestly don’t know any more if this is the outcome most of those who voted Trump or withdrew their vote for reasons of conscience intended.. but it is certainly the outcome… and denying it like some deny sexism, racism and homophobia doesn’t change the fact that more than half of this country’s population no longer feels safe on the street in their own neighborhood.

I know it’s easy to dismiss this as a few “nut jobs” and think it doesn’t matter… but i have to ask.. at what point do the number of “nut jobs” … the number of people who think it’s their right to verbally or physically accost anyone they think needs to be chastised in any way become large enough to ask yourself if the “nut jobs” have taken over?

is it when they have organized themselves? they have.
is it when they are prosecuted for their actions and walk away exonerated? that has happened too.

or is it when someone you care about .. or you . becomes the target?

I know it’s a short video but you can see the violation plain as day. This happens all too often and SPD can’t or wont enforce red light runners at this and other locations. When I’m first at this intersection on Oregon, I wait and LOOK after my light turns green. You should too. If I would have gone when my light turned green, there would have been an accident.

I’ve also asked Seattle DOT to help and it’s always the same story, “doesn’t meet criteria”. Or I never hear back from them. Newer blue Ford F150. Washington plate C1***6F with tabs expiring in December.

I believe the order goes something like this: NixonCare, DoleCare, ClintonCare and, finally, ObamaCare.

By the way, Healthcare INSURANCE (capitalized on purpose) CEOs are still pulling down record annual compensation and Premera just raised premiums something on the order of 7% and are planning on a double digit raise next year. I capitalized the word insurance because this is a key part of the equation that no one talks about, or not as often as they ought to. What I pay for every month, at usurious rates, is insurance. It still allows the carrier to deny care. It’s not healthcare, it’s a multi-billion dollar business. Profiting from pain and suffering is reprehensible and it’s the system that we’ve allowed to flourish and to become entrenched today.

redblack: I was in the tech development business for over 20 years. The number of entrepreneurial businesses in Seattle now is a tiny fraction of what it was in the 80’s and 90’s. There has been a mass exodus of businesses out of Seattle because of the anti-business policies. Good and effective government can only be achieved if we have leaders who understand the free enterprise system. Academics and social engineers just screw things up because they get the cart in front of the horse. Seattle is not going to grow much new business without net positive incentives.

JoB: Look up the definition of “Straw man Argument”. That will explain your entire debate premise.

Under “progressive-speek”, I should have been forced by law to state “Straw-woman/person/zie/sie/ey/ve/man” in fifteen languages to honor the extensively wasteful and inefficient government that you liberals want to see developed under an “equality”themed Clinton dictatorship.

Meanwhile, Trump just did a short ten minute speech at his new DC hotel exemplifying what he want’s to do with this country. This is why so many people are voting for Trump:

Do you really think Trump wants to risk losing his hotels in a nuclear war? Hitlery on the other hand, believes that we need to drastically reduce world population and war is the most efficient tool. “Nasty” doesn’t begin to adequately describe her.

JoB: I don’t believe any group of people should have rights over any other group of people. I know that is a common them of the left–to promise “things” to specific classes of people for votes. Most of the time those “things” never really get delivered. i.e.: the forty-year-old democrat war on poverty that has left more people impoverished than ever.

Where are you finding that molesting women is a legal activity? (Other than Hillary’s ability to exonerate rapists and destroy the lives of women molested by her husband).
