I rent a house here in WS. My garbage service is included in my rent, but my landlord pays the bill for garbage (and I will be billed for anything over the basic service they’ve selected). Everything has been working out well since we moved into this house in May – the one garbage can is enough for the two of us without going over (and incurring more charge) and I love having a large recycling bin for us to use without sharing it (like we did in the old apartment complex). Some weeks we fill it full, other times we don’t, but it’s nice to have the option.

About 2 months ago, I went out on Sunday night to put out recycling. That’s when I found our recycling bin (plastic/paper) was stuffed full. Not only was it not our stuff, but it was filled with non-recyclable things like styrofoam and platic bags. I did not see who did it, but I find it coincidental that it was the same week that the duplex next door had a new family move in – the styrofoam and plastic was along with boxes for furniture that presumably had been put together, as well as moving boxes. Since I had not enough room for my own stuff, and I didn’t want my landlord (or us) to get in trouble for putting trash in there, I took out the non-recyclables, put it in a bag, and put it with the neighbor’s garbage that I suspected it belonged to.

The next week I went to put garbage in my single can and found that it was half full with a bag that was not ours. (I don’t use that type of garbage bag.) I took it out and also left it next door, on top of their stuffed-full mini cans. A week later, there is more stuff in our recycling bin, and more stuff in our garbabe.

I am very frustrated by this. Garbage pickup is a paid service here, so in essence, somebody is stealing my service. It’s inconvenient for me to have to try and cram my own stuff in there because someone thought they had this sense of entitlement to use a neighbor’s can without permission. Now, if the same person came to my door and said “gee, I see that you have a lot of extra room, and I’m out – can I use your can?” I’d be more than happy to help out (if I had the room). But the fact that this is being done on the sly, and without regard for anyone but themselves, is what is most frustrating. Plus I never know if, after I put out my garbage, if someone is going to add to it – and incur a larger cost for my landlord (which they’ll blame me for), or getting us in trouble for putting the wrong thing in the wrong can.

I feel uncomfortable knocking on the door and blaming a particular family (even though it started as soon as they moved in) because I’ve never actually seen anyone do it. Besides, I don’t know which part of the duplex they live in and don’t want to knock on the wrong door. I’ve thought of putting a sign up, although I’m not even sure what I’d say.

If this were happening to you, how would you handle it? Do I confront someone? Put a sign up? Contact non-emergency police about it? Call the city trash/recycling people? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Interesting question. I suspect that it is so personal and individual that an aggregation of the responses won’t tell us much. In other words, everyone may want someone who inspires them, but what actually inspires us is all over the map.

For example, I find geeks like Gore, with powerpoint presentations and endless facts, very inspirational. And the first public figure I responded to emotionally was Fidel Castro when some CBS show interviewed him in the Sierra Maestro Mountains — I was 7 and wanted to sign up.

In some way, I find Obamamania as disturbing and inexplicable as I found the notion of drinking with Bush.

Bottom Line, JoB, responding to charisma doesn’t require study or research or thought or trips to the library. Not being able to simply respond, was why I was awake at 1 a.m. this morning, posting to another forum. I heard something very disturbing about Obama on a radio call-in show and spent half an hour doing the research (to find out what I heard wasn’t true.) If I was just responding to his charisma, I could have rolled over and gone to sleep.

The short winded summary of my long winded response is that charisma doesn’t take much work, on the part of the responder. AND many of us, on all sides, are desperately hungry for some kind of inspiration.

I do not think protest is stupid. I think it is hypocritical to burn the flag of our own country because you’re upset that we are at war. How would our troops feel to see the citizens they are fighting to protect, burning their country’s flag? That is what is bothersome about the video to me. That’s what I meant by “stupid”. I think that is a little like “booing of soldiers”.

If you are against the war, make a sign. Burning the symbol of America is as un-patriotic as you can get.

obviously flower petal, this is a mother who wasn’t thinking about anything other than the photo opportunity it presented. What if the coyote had actually approached and her little angel had “tamed” a wild beast?

If his fingers had gone with the coyote, something tells me we wouldn’t have been seeing that clip.

This is why it is so important that we are educated about the wild creatures living around us… and that we learn how to interact with them responsibly… so that our children will know the difference between wild and domesticated creatures and will not try to interact with them.

wild animals don’t get used to humans by simply watching them.. they get used to humans because someone thinks they are cute and feeds them and encourages them to hang around… and thinks it’s cute to get the animal closer and to get it to play. Generally, they are not the one who suffers for that behavior because they are a food source.. but the next person who comes along without food and uses the same gestures often does pay.

And the animal is killed. Not because it wanted to hurt humans but because some idiot taught it to see humans as a food source.

ok.. i will get off this soapbox now:)

Thank you!! We’re being inundated with family this summer and I need to be prepared, but I don’t want them to have to drive too far. (I figured that about the place on Alaska…too bad it’s literally two blocks from our house!)

Wow, those people infuriate me! Hey, look at us! We’re posing with wild animals while mommy takes a picture! oops, coyote bit my sleeve — kill it! KILL IT!

    New resident..

sharing the video isn’t agitating. it is informing.

saying that it makes you want to throw up without stating why… creating a point of discussion… is agitating.

It is indiscriminately throwing “chum” out while fishing to see what it will attract…

House’s follow up post was far more interesting and had he started there.. i might have actually looked at the video and responded to the post.

Now your comments are interesting… because you stated what you thought so that others could actually respond with thought… not just a visceral reaction.

Why do you think protesting the war is stupid? Do you think protesting this particular war is stupid or do you think protesting any war is stupid? Like house, do you believe that protests don’t work?

I am not meaning to grill you, just ask some questions so that you can clarify your thought.

I will tell you that history tells us that protest is not useless. Most major changes in our country have occurred because of the catalyst of protest.. including the one that made us a country.

And why would any protest symbol bother you? Flag burning has been a symbol of protest from the beginning of our country… and it was not always the flag of another country. during different periods of our history, one state or area has brazenly burned the flag of another.. and of the United states itself.

I would remind you that when the British flag was burned… it was the flag of this country.

I was strongly opposed to the booing of soldiers that happened while the Vietnam war was winding down because that was blaming individuals for something beyond their control..

but i am not the least bit concerned with the burning of a flag. That just saying … pay attention… i, an American, am upset with what you are doing.

i don’t find the clips of terrorists burning the flag so offensive either. They can burn anything they want in effigy.

When they cut off heads, i get upset.

Now.. there is a place to start a discussion and neither one of us has to throw up:)

This is an example of stupidity in humans, not agression in coyotes. What mother with common sense would stand around taking photos of her kid agitating a coyote? And then she appears on national television to let people know just how foolish she is.

CMP… I 100% concur!!! It’s funny how, unless something similar has happened to you, you don’t think about certain things. The maximizing parking spaces on a particular part of the street is a big deal to me. We have a curb in front of our and our neighbors and right when we moved in, the neighbors car would always be parked right smack in the middle of all that space, leaving no room for a second car. We started parking right in front of our own driveway and very close to the neighbor’s car (it looked kinda ridiculous, which is the effect we intended) and they finally got the hint. Maybe, felicialh could try something like that. We never left a note, but now both our neighbor’s and our car fit happily together in that space!

I spent part of my evening last night in our local library reading time magazine. i caught just enough of the headlines at the vets yesterday to be intrigued.

They had several articles on the campaigns.. no surprise there.. but one of them talked about the “magic” of the Obama campaign… which is mostly about the magic of the Obama campaign. And another.. surprisingly a pro McCain article.. talked about the importance of American confidence in the next President for out financial future.

The theme seemed to be that we should elect someone who causes excitement about their campaign and will inspire confidence.

This is not the Hillary/Obama thread… so i am actually asking both republicans and democrats what it is about this charisma/confidence/inspiration thing that so appeals to them.

Because when i honestly ask Obama supporters why they support him and i listen, it really boils down to this one sentiment.

And when i ask republicans i know (i do know people who really like McCain) .. the words are different, but the sentiment is the same.

I know something like this is difficult to articulate… but would those of you who feel strongly please try.

house. just thought i would help out here.

if you want to tag me .. you can accurately call me seditious.

i think of it as actually giving you something to think about… but for some people the act of thinking is sedition:)

and i meant that in only the most accurate way.

House, i have found the spell checker on the site very useful.. of course it doesn’t get me past all of it, but it sure does help. And if i actually read my posts and edit after i post (that blue background and larger type does wonders for me) it really helps.

and charlabob.. how dare you imply that i am a good little lib. you really have to get to know me better ;-0

    Robin Rich is at Spokesdog.com

this is the other training center where the shiba rescue folks take problem dogs

    Packworks .

    Gretchen Schumaker and Michael Schmidt

    425-870-7533

    http://www.packworks.org

Robin Rick is described as “espensive but worth it” and she will come to your home. the other benefit is that she does board dogs she has worked with.

Packworks will also come to your home.. but they specialize in creating environments to challenge your dog.

i think that is where i am going next.

I think some people have a bit of OCD when it comes to parking. In their mind, it makes sense to park in the same place every day, even if it’s not logical. Maybe they’re not smart enough to remember where they’ve parked so by leaving their car in the same place every day, they won’t have to worry about it.

While we’re on the parking topic, I wish people would learn how to park properly to maximize as many cars as possible in parallel parking situations. My neighbors always park like idiots and it makes me crazy. There’s a sign posted saying “no parking north of here” right in front of my building and without fail, someone will park 2/3 of a car length south of the sign, completely wasting a perfectly good space. Then another neighbor has left their motorcycle about 7 feet from the edge of a driveway so that’s another wasted space. I should call that thing in since it’s been parked like that for a month now on a busy street. Anyway, you can fit five cars in this area but we usually only manage three b/c of inconsiderate drivers. Oh yeah, park within your lines too…it’s not that difficult!

JT, I should have been specific. The fact that someone would burn the American flag over a military branch opening a recruiting facility (not on a school campus from what I understand) is something that I have a major issue with regardless of age.

I know 5 year olds that will tell you that the flag should not even touch the ground, so stupidity is not an excuse.

Protesting is fine (although I personally believe it’s useless).

    Disagreeing with Government is fine.

Disagreeing with the war is fine.

Opposing military recruitment on school campuses does not make sense unless you ban all types of recruitng (this would include college and vocational school recruiting).

And JoB, here is a direct quote from you:

“Name calling is not and never has been part of civilized conversation and that is the only kind i am interested in.”

Your validity “hit points” just went down by 50 by calling me an agitator. I can easily see how you view me as such based on your responses. Tell the truth….did you light the match for those kids?

No, House, you had a dilemma. I don’t expect reason or logic from the right…but, perhaps, judicious use of a spellchecker? Now, if I were a good little lib, I’d insert a smiley here and we’d all be friends. But I’m not…so I won’t.

PS — to my WSB friends who *are* good libs, I stand in respectful awe of your patience and good humor.

    Good night and good luck.

I don’t think anyone thinks they are harmless… but those kids weren’t following recommendations for interacting with them either…

Make yourself as big as possible… wave your arms and yell at them.

you don’t extend fingers and ask them to play.

Would you prefer to interact with the rats that are one of their food sources?

I have a day time parker right now that walks a block away to work with open spots the whole distance but for some reason likes my house. Leaves for lunch everyday too and then right back to my house. I have a driveway, but I keep thinking, why? In the past when I needed the spot and there was plenty of other parking down the street, I left a nicely worded note to the effect that I have kids, groceries, it’s always raining, it would be super nice if I could get closer to my house….The overnight every night parker (is that a word?), I again explained in a note, if at all possible could you park near the house you’re staying at so that I’m able to keep an eye on my car. It’s not the safest neighborhood, yada, yada, yada….In each case with long term parking (3 times ) I understand it’s anyone’s legal spot, but there was not a shortage in other areas and when I explained nicely why I would like the convenience of parking in front of my own home, they were accommodating and I don’t think I pissed anyone off.

I’m not trying to be flippant House, but which part bothers you? Flag burning, kids protesting, being opposed to recruiting, the crowd yelling shame on you which I’m not sure which side that was coming from. There also seemed to be neighbors yelling at everyone to go away b/c they were on their street. I’m not a big fan of recruitment at high schools, but I think they have every right and maybe even an obligation to open an office in every city. Our country certainly needs a strong military and I don’t quite understand opposing them. IMO the kids should be protesting politicians not the military regarding war. And I think they were just kids who weren’t thinking through what they were doing. In that regard I think they’re being stupid not vomit worthy.

    Stop flakin’ and perpetratin’, yo.

And JT, I am not complaining. Read the title of the thread. I had a dilema and started dialogue, then was asked to fend who I would actually like as President of the United States. All you did in your post was restate my original dilema. Thanks for your insight! :)

we tried that… he/she leaves sometime in the morning after we leave for work and is always back before we get home. Hopefully a nicely worded note well encourage them to park down the street a bit where many of the residents are seniors and do not own cars… there is not a lack of parking, its just where they continue to park that is a little frustrating. But as someone mentioned earlier, they probably have no idea they are causing a stir, by the time they are leaving in the a.m. and coming in the p.m. none of us our back from work. Crazy how many of us have these parking challenges! Thank you everyone for the advice & insights into the city planning!

I used to live over by an elementary school, if I came home during the pick up time I would be unable to park anywhere near my house, and if I tried to leave during pick up time then I would be blocked in by those wonderful parents/guardians. So I understand what a hassle it is to not be able to park near your house, but it’s public property and you can’t claim it as your own unless you have a permit.

And, Job, for what it’s worth…. I obviously don’t know House (just like I don’t know anyone else on this site), but I’m pretty sure that House respects your opinion and perspective too. I really don’t think he would give you the time of day if he didn’t enjoy debating with you. It just seems to me that House responds to both you and Jan and not many other people on this site. All three of you have very insightful views and I know I enjoy reading all of your posts.
