jeordiewMemberThere is a reason ranchers shoot these things on site, while the urban hippies debate their “majesty” and “right” to be in our backyards

JoBParticipantI don’t think anyone thinks they are harmless… but those kids weren’t following recommendations for interacting with them either…
Make yourself as big as possible… wave your arms and yell at them.
you don’t extend fingers and ask them to play.
Would you prefer to interact with the rats that are one of their food sources?

flowerpetalMemberThis is an example of stupidity in humans, not agression in coyotes. What mother with common sense would stand around taking photos of her kid agitating a coyote? And then she appears on national television to let people know just how foolish she is.

AnonymousInactiveWow, those people infuriate me! Hey, look at us! We’re posing with wild animals while mommy takes a picture! oops, coyote bit my sleeve — kill it! KILL IT!

JoBParticipantobviously flower petal, this is a mother who wasn’t thinking about anything other than the photo opportunity it presented. What if the coyote had actually approached and her little angel had “tamed” a wild beast?
If his fingers had gone with the coyote, something tells me we wouldn’t have been seeing that clip.
This is why it is so important that we are educated about the wild creatures living around us… and that we learn how to interact with them responsibly… so that our children will know the difference between wild and domesticated creatures and will not try to interact with them.
wild animals don’t get used to humans by simply watching them.. they get used to humans because someone thinks they are cute and feeds them and encourages them to hang around… and thinks it’s cute to get the animal closer and to get it to play. Generally, they are not the one who suffers for that behavior because they are a food source.. but the next person who comes along without food and uses the same gestures often does pay.
And the animal is killed. Not because it wanted to hurt humans but because some idiot taught it to see humans as a food source.
ok.. i will get off this soapbox now:)

KenParticipantCoyotes ARE harmless. Until we teach them that we are a source of food.
Then their own intelligence makes them dangerous.
My Rotweiler was harmless too, but I never ever took her outside the fence without a pinch collar to help her *remember* to be harmless in public situations.

AnonymousInactiveKen… good for you!!! I applaud your responsibility as a dog owner of a possibly aggressive dog. My parents dog was attacked by an unleashed pit bull.
