I have no experience with or thoughts regarding Alki Automotive, however will second herongrrl’s endorsement of Courtesy Tire.

Over the years they have done almost as much ‘free’ work on my tires (checking air-pressure after cold spells or before road trips) as they have replacing the tires and battery on my car.

The long-term staff are a great group of guys who are eager to answer any questions and help in any way they can!!!

I wanted to like Alki Automotive because they were really convenient. Unfortunately I found them to be expensive and condescending.

I love Courtesy Tire on California. They do great work for reasonable rates, and are honest about what they can and can’t do. We had a bad transmission once and they told us they could do it, but because they weren’t a transmission shop they recommended a transmission specific shop who did it for more than $1K less than Courtesy estimated it would cost them.

Yes, there is work going on. Some weeks back, we briefly saw the owner, while we were parking nearby on our way to cover something, asked him how it’s going, “It’s going!” he replied cheerily. We were there again more recently (last week, I think) and saw work crews at the site. This is more a labor of love than some big construction project. But we are overdue for an update, and while Clay Eals had been chronicling it as part of his work as SWSHS executive director, now that he’s left that role I don’t know if he’ll continue updating it for them … Tracy

It’s been over a year since I last saw an update on the progress. Has it ground to a halt, or is there actually work going on?

Is there a limit to the distance a car can travel in a non-protected bike lane (not sharrow) before making that right turn, assuming they have yielded to cyclists first? I can’t find anything.

I know there is a limit to distance traveled the center turn lane (aka two-way left turn lane), which is 300 ft. according to RCW, so I thought there would be a distance limit here too.

The 10-minute thing is just an average too. I waited 18 minutes between two C buses this morning at your exact spot. And of course it was full. Then the next one came one minute later. Stupid.

As for crowdedness. You should have seen it 3-4 years ago. Oh the glory days.

I have my motorcycle insurance through Safeco. Have never had to file a claim (knock on wood), but everything else has been smooth. And their motorcycle rates were about half the price of Geico for the exact same policy.

Hey right turners, please familiarize yourselves with the rules of the road. You are allowed to drive in a bike lane to make a right turn. In fact, you are REQUIRED to do it, as it is illegal to turn across another lane of traffic going the same direction. You are putting cyclists at risk by crossing over their path, and you are holding up traffic that would like to make it through the green light. A turn signal would be great, too.

I think that is exactly how I feel as well re: this has to be her choice.

What we feel might improve another’s life may not actually help.

I would still love to build something, and if she want it, awesome. If not, there are others who might. If they don’t, hell, it was a fun, good heart thing to do. Learning lesson and move on.

The thing that warms me most is how so many people here want to help.

And you might ask yourself, “who makes refrigerated or frozen food products in Sonoma country that would be shipped to OR and WA?” Don’t know if Nancy’s Yogurt has their own refers or contracts with drivers making that run up and down the coast. But there’re any number of organic ice cream and dessert manufactures from So Cal north who have to bet product to the PNW. Their operations people should be willing to talk to you.

@HappyOnAlki I’ve thought about this for years and even approached my employer (who would be totally open to $ helping) about having someone fabricate her a more user-friendly ‘cart’ but it would totally have to be ‘here, would you like to use this’? and being completely open/accepting to her saying ‘Oh, that’s very nice… but no thank you’.

We all have to understand… for whatever reasons… soundly consciously chosen or not… Her LIFE… is just that…

An old or young dog, can be trained to only take food from a bowl in the house. This would mean no treats from the hand even from mom, dad and the kids, ever. It would also mean having access to the house all day for water.

I found a backpack laying in the bushes on 37th between Genesee and Fauntleroy on my walk today. It contained another backpack, and an awesome new emergency kit. I wonder if it was stolen from someone’s car? The West Seattle Precinct now has it, you can pick it up there within the next 12 hours or call (206) 733-9800 with incident number 2017-340038, and they will direct you.

I’ve had very good experiences with them. When I thought I could benefit from new tires, the guy who looked them over said I had at least another year left on them but he noticed, from the sound, that the battery would soon need replacement (but not right now). They’re good mechanics and the owner is conscientious and ethical.

I am so sorry to hear about this! I am perpetually terrified for my animals as we back up to an alley/greenbelt here in Arbor Heights and there is a lot of foot traffic back there. With two golden retrievers in the yard there can be some barking and what not, and also my animals are very oral-focused so I always worry someone is going to throw something over the fence and they’ll catch hold of it. I’m so glad your furbaby is ok, keep us posted on if you find out who did it, that’s just awful.
