Remember DP, a tax CUT is equivalent to any other form of government spending, in dollars spent/cut, they just have never had the same positive affect on the country as a whole.

Spending a few billion dollars to build infrastructure spreads the wealth around and improves a much larger segment of the economy than the direct benefactors.

Tax cuts to billionaires get quickly shuttled offshore into tax havens.

Both are public dollars spent, but only one REALLY provides any return to the public at large.

dgirl, I agree with you. I am a cyclist and slow waaaayyy down when using the multi-use paths if there’s peds around. Going fast I take the street. I have also seen too many cyclists, and been passed too close (just the other day in fact!) by other cyclists when on my bike and walking.

I try to always signal someone when passing and can only hope that others do. Sometimes I don’t, but usually due to a situation in which I either need to be watching another ped, oncoming traffic, or other crazy thing. Which does happen. And as DOC says, lots and lots of times if a cyclist yells “on your left” the pedestrian moves left instead of right. Or if I say anything they stop and turn around rather than moving right. Bells work much better!

Remember, we are living in the culture of “me” so that sadly there are many people both in cars, cycling AND walking that simply will not mingle well with other road/sidwalk/MUP users. And for those of us who prefer to think of our situation as a “we” problem, we’ll be never endingly frustrated.

I agree with Jan. If someone yells “on your left” (or whatever) BEFORE they get right up on top of you, there’s less chance of startling someone. Slowing down would help too. It’s scary how fast some bikes are going when they whip by me as a walker.

how about this…when there are walkers present, SLOW DOWN. Is that really too much to ask? I have nearly been hit when walking at Alki because the biker invariably yells “left” at the exact moment they’re passing, not before as a warning…it’s startling !

I agree with you that it can be scary when you are walking on the sidewalk and get passed by a biker without realizing it, but think of this. You are walking, suddenly you hear a loud “on your left”, you jump, often to one side or the other, and 50% of the time it is right in the path of the biker.

I slow down when I am in a situation near people and space it tight, but when I pass a person, I give no warning. Because almost every time, that warning results in the person jumping directly into my path, which turns a “that biker almost hit me” story into a “I just got hit by a biker”.

I know this may sound a little odd, but I have realized it is much safer for you to get scared after I pass you then before I pass you.

OK….I understand all of the fears and frustrations that bicylists have with cars…BUT…as a walker, I have the same fears and frustrations with many bikers. Please note…I did not say “All” bikers. Way, way, way too often on my various walks on pedestrian/biker pathways, there is no bell, no “on your left”, not even a clearing of the voice as a bike whisks past me. If I had veered slightly to my left (or staggered…) I would be road kill!! Please, all you environmentally conscientious, green, gas free bikers…get a clue and WARN a pedestrian before you race around them. This is not a rare, one-time occurence. It happens at least once on every walk I take on a city path. I am a big walker, so the numbers add up. I have a very hard time sticking up for bikers when my life is constantly at risk by too many of you. Follow the rules folks…they are for all of us!

As it turns out, you can correlate the national debt with the ruling party and it doesn’t turn out quite like the republicans tell us it does.

in my lifetime, democrats have definately been the party of fiscal responsibility…

while they don’t turn off the corporate tap to the public trough.. they do make sure that some of the funds trickle down to minor matters like job creation and safety nets that create taxable income …

as for the exception Obama is likely to be in his first term…

I would like to know if you would have been happier if he had sat on his thumbs and allowed the mess left by the last administration to collapse the economy entirely.

we still have some employed middle class taxpayers floating the national boat… and that’s a good thing.

Now all we have to do is end the tax breaks to those whose wealth is increasing exponentially in this severe downturn and the great deficit balloon springs a major leak.

We could simply tax what they have earned on our backs during this “downturn” … that’s why they call it an income tax… and get a leg up on digging ourselves out of this financial fiasco created by republican largess to the most wealthy corporations and individuals in America.

I have an idea.. how about we give those affected by having their tax rates restored a credit for living wage US job creation … that would create some actual taxpayers to dig us out of this mess and give them all kinds of opportunity for profit in the process.

We recently changed out a toilet. I called the city to request a “bulky item” pick-up. The guy on the phone said they do not pick up toilets, but he ACTUALLY suggested I put it on the street with a “free” sign on it!! I could not believe it!

That might be true for Madison, but I go by HP Elementary every day, and rarely see any cars in the lot (for teachers or summer program chaperones).

The first time I drove 9th after school let out, I took a right SB off of a residential street midway along the school zone and didn’t notice the lights were flashing until I saw the NB lights in my side mirror after I passed them! Lucky. Now I see that there is a flashing strobe on the backside of the sign apparatus, so I look for that when I know I’m entering a school zone off of a non-arterial. Not helpful for unfamiliar neighborhoods, but I know where most of the school zones are in my area.

Saw a truck in front of me get ticketed on Henderson that same afternoon, going too fast in the school zone AND failing to yield to a crosser at 11th (I stopped for the ped, and the inconspicuously marked cop pulled out in front of me!).

Dumping furniture and other “free” stuff seems to be fairly common around West Seattle. Are the trashy people doing this from West Seattle I wonder, or do we just get dumped on? This mentality of putting junk out on the parking strip seems to be rather pervasive here. Do we just have a high concentration of inconsiderate jackasses in the area, or do the goobers who do this really think it’s okay to litter? Yeah, that spongy, filthy recliner from the 80’s looks like a real sweet deal, especially when it’s been out in the rain a few days. And how about one of those discarded mattresses, of dubious provenance, and a battered old dresser to round out your new pad? It’s all “free”! (except for the one that eventually has to haul it away and dispose of it). If you want to rid yourself of your stuff, use craigslist or have a yard sale…otherwise it’s LITTER.

Oh and Thank You Hammerhead for doing what you do! When my kitty Ruby passed away suddenly a some years ago I was devastated. a few weeks and a million tears later my husband and I went shopping and happened on one of the kitty rescue adoption events. With some prodding I held one of the cats, and we made an instant bond. I still have her 6 years later and she sleeps on me every night :)

I want to say a couple of thank you’s. To Jessica Forsthye, she has graciously let FCAT and FAF to use her salon on Sunday’s for adopt a thons. Next to Nature doesn’t have air conditioning. Plus we are able to put a completely enclosed tent for the kittens to run around in and people can go in a visit. It is really great.

Also for all of the NEW business I have gotten over the past month. I have picked up at least 10 news clients and they are ALL from the West Seattle Blog. I just can’t thank the blog enough.

earmarks are not necessarily bad. Some of these are grants that keep the things in this state running, I’m sure. Perhaps if you break it down according to what was helped by each one, or what you opine to be worthless and spendy, maybe that would help. Our representatives are there to work for the state, for the people, and while I don’t feel that they are doing a magnificent job, I won’t throw them under the bus on just numbers.

And it ticks me off that you have blinders as far as Patty Murray is concerned. Everything you say/post etc regarding these things is targeted to her. Biased a little against her?

And a sincere question. How should we fund the military? Or are you simply against having one. Nothing will change magically overnight if money is taken away totally. Having been a member of the military a long time ago (think Vietnam era), I saw tons of waste back then, so I’m sure that hasn’t changed much. We can’t NOT fund the military at all, but I’d like to see it run in a different way. And I’d like to see a heck of a lot more put into veterans after they have served. That’s one of the things that is positive about Patty Murray. She does that. Now, if you think voting for slick Dino Rossi is gonna bring a new day to this state, then go for it…but take the blinders off. He’s a salesman of the worst kind, in my book.

I’m pleased to say that two of my favorite Representatives, McDermott and Inslee, are on the bottom of this list.

On the other hand, I’m saddened, but not at all surprised, to see that Patty Murray is way out in front with 210 earmarks total—which is 38 more earmarks than Maria Cantwell and 130 more projects than her nearest competitor in the House.

It would be nice if this Web app gave dollar totals by sponsor, but it doesn’t. What it does do, though, is give us some good info about the earmark itself, including the dollar amount and what it was for.

If we look at Patty Murray’s earmarks, for example, we quickly see that a large number of them—and nearly all the most expensive ones—fall into the categories of Military Construction, Homeland Security, and Defense.

Here are just a few of Murray’s recent gifts to the military:

I’m posting this information for the benefit of those among you who hold that there are irreconcilable differences between Republicans and Democrats across the board. Certainly there are differences, but not when it comes to feeding the military beast. In fact, it’s hard for me to imagine Dino Rossi or any other Republican funneling more taxpayer money into the Army’s maw than Patty Murray.

Want to vote Murray for other reasons? Fine. But please don’t vote for her because you have some hazy idea that she’s different from Republicans when it comes to supporting the military-industrial complex. As the numbers show, it’s just not true.

Now get out there and vote for your favorite militarist!

Our daughter ended up going to Denny. We were apprehensive and with our hands covering most of eyes but I have say, we have been very pleasantly surprised. It was a little slow start for her but she gained a lot of confidence and has made a GREAT group of friends. I know there are stories but it seems to me that it’s really up to the child and family for how the experience turns out. She hasn’t had any issues and I’m proud to say she’s a straight A student but she did have to work to get them. It wasn’t a hand out…. They do have advanced programs you can enter that we will be starting next year.
