MooseMemberWe have SO many trees and part of the problem is some of those are holding up our hill. I need someone who can view the property and determine those that are at risk in the next wind storm and those that can be taken out to open up our back area. Also – would chipping up the cut limbs be a good solution for a drive way and or ground cover or would that just lead to a soggy bug filled mess?

jwwsParticipantTry Mark Harman at Stonehedge (WS Blog sponsor – scroll down for his contact info) or Michael Oxman 206.949-8733, http://www.treedr.com.

LibertybellParticipantI second jwws. Mark @ Stonehedge is great. Had him limb a huge fir to let in more light and they did a great job and there was no sign they had been there – No mess what so ever!!

MooseMemberThat sounds great! I love the idea of NO mess.

ws4everMemberI appreciate your concern for saving the hillside. Your neighbors will thank you for that. Neighbors on either side of me treasure their views, and I appreciate that, but are endangering the hillside by cutting down vegetation and other questionable practices. Puts me in a very awkward position, as they think they have a “right” to do this.

MooseMemberI will begin the ‘quote’ process. Thanks!!! Any thoughts on wood chipping for ground cover? we have dogs so grass never really makes it through a season. I see wood chips at the dog park but I could be missing something BIG.

The Velvet BulldogParticipantWood chips are a great ground cover and I’ve never heard of them harboring anything unsavory, though others may be able to add a story to this. One consideration is whether the wood chips will be kicked into garden areas when the dogs run across them. This could get messy and annoying if you’re trying to constantly clean it up.

jwwsParticipantMoose,
We have dogs too and replaced our grass with gravel – easy to pick up poop and rake back into place. We use wood chips on the “dog paths” in the garden beds but the dogs soon make a mess of it and some plants are not happy around wood chips, gravel is a lot cleaner too if you have long haired dogs who bring the garden indoors with them on their coats!

MooseMemberThanks jwws. That might actually work too (using the chips for the path)They made a track in our lawn and the gravel area. When the chase ensues you can hear the pinging of the rocks hitting the cars (and we wince).

yikesMemberIsn’t gravel hard on the dog’s feet? I have the same challenge in covering my sloped dog run… but I’m thinking the gravel would migrate down…. but am curious about the impact on my dog’s feet….
