I’m thrilled to see so many comments from people who use logic! Every morning as I drive a mile or so in the lane that is going to end, I seriously feel like I am surrounded by idiots! I don’t mean to be rude, but come on people. The lane doesn’t end at the Delridge on ramp for goodness sake! It’s like being at a 4-way stop and the person who is supposed to go flags you through. I DON’T see that as a nice gesture, but more a clear display of ignorance. There are rules for a reason…and that reason is to make things flow as efficiently as possible. Germany has the right idea. What’s so hard for so many people to understand about the “zipper” concept?? Well, while all those people are trying to figure it out or are busy being angry that their commute is taking a half hour longer than usual, I’ll be sailing by and getting to work still on time :)

p.s. the “zipper” concept does not apply when it comes to an exit. If you see an exit ramp is backed up, you are a complete douche if you cut in at the last moment…it’s NOT the same thing and shows that you must have missed that day in kindergarten when they taught us not to cut in line. And if you can’t understand the difference between the two scenarios, you really shouldn’t be operating a motor vehicle.

I am almost certain that you cannot cross the lane after the peak. I have seen cops sit down at the the 99 exit before and point at cars that had been driving in the bus lane to pull over (and get tickets). I don’t think it matters the amount of distance you actually travel in it. I think it’s the same as a single occupancy car using a carpool lane to pass a slow car in the passing lane.

Great sofa sleeper, perfect for guest room or just an extra bed. Mattress is in good shape and clean. It’s on the parking strip on 47th Ave SW between Holgate St. and Massachusetts St. I don’t want it to go in the landfill, but we just don’t need it anymore. Will someone come and get it please? It’s heavy, as sofa sleepers are, and needs a couple of strong backs to move it.

Crime Sucks. Suckers who commit crime suck even more! Sorry this happened to you…

Here is how I beat this problem in my neighborhood…I advise the shipper to have deliveries be signature only deliveries.. They will try to deliver it, fail, leave you a door tag, call the number on the back, they will hold it down at the distro facility and you can run down to the UPS/FedEx locations down on SoDo (7th ave and Alaska St respectively) and get them. It is an extra step, but someone seems to have your number on this one….

Many times I just work this into my commute home or to work to make it less of a hassle…may times you can go down and pick it up later the same day as it was delivered.

Never seen so many looky-loos and slowdowns for NOTHING, literally NOTHING. *ok, back on topic* KBear, I always like it when, because I see a bus in my rear view mirror (and I want to give them a clear path), I wait until it passes before going into the bus lane, putting me into “cutting” territory by the time I can merge to the 99 lane at the top of the highrise. No realization that I was being responsible, just the glare & finger because I look like an ass. Can’t win!

Thanks for your recommendation! Unfortunately (or fortunately?), I’ve already found painters for my house.

For those of you still looking, I ended up calling a number of companies that had high ratings on Angie’s List.

I got five bids in total. Evergreen Home Painting came in the cheapest ($2300). Queen Anne Painting came in the highest ($16,000). The last three bids all came in within the $3000-$4300 range.

While Evergreen does have an excellent rating on Angie’s List, I thought (and two general contractors + interior designer I work with agreed) that their bid was almost TOO low. The concern we had was that for that price, the amount of prep work (not to mention care and attention they would give to the job) would be minimal. Yes, to a layman, the house would look beautiful once the job was complete (hence the positive consumer reviews) but how does their work hold up over a year? five years? ten years? How quickly would the paint start to chip or peel? Since my contractors/designer were skeptical, I decided to heed their professional advice and go with someone else.

I also decided not to go with Queen Anne Painting because the price they quoted me was the same price I paid for my car. Seriously–does anyone go with them? $16,000?! I about choked when I saw that price.

In the end, I went with Aurea NW Painters (206.427.8356 / http://www.aureapainters.com). They came recommended by the interior designer and their bid was in the mid-range. My reason for choosing them came down to the following:

1) They came recommended by the interior designer who has worked with them on multiple projects for the past three years. In other words, she has had an opportunity to view their work on multiple occaisions and remains suitably impressed with their work. In addition, one of the general contractors I work with had seen them prep + paint a house about a month ago and was also impressed with their attention to detail as well as the quality of their materials.

2) I knew, from experience, that going with a recommendation from a general contractor or interior designer (like in this instance) almost always adds an extra layer of protection for me, the homeowner. Why? Because painters like Aurea get a lot of their business from these individuals and are more likely to do a good job in order to keep getting referrals from them.

3) Aurea is a two-man team comprised of Erik and Rudy. In other words, the owners of the company do all the painting and they don’t hire out a bunch of subcontractors. When working with subcontractors, you never know what you’re going to get. I certainly didn’t want to trust the exterior of my house to an unknown.

So choosing Eric and Rudy / Aurea Painters was a no-brainer for me. I hired them last week and they are coming out today to pressure wash my house and will be prepping + painting the house starting on Friday. I’ll let everyone know how the job turns out!

I agree with you dgirl, two things have happened to me recently, a bicycle on the road did not stop as I was attempting to cross at a crosswalk and then, I was walking on the sidewalk and two bikes came up behind me and the one person kept ringing their bell obviously expecting that I would move onto the grass, really annoying. I agree that bikes should not be on the sidewalk but I am usually willing to share.

HMCRich.. i gotta ask. Just what future do you think this nation would have had if the financial crisis had turned into a complete financial meltdown…because that is still a very real possibility.

I spoke a couple of days ago with a man in his 50s who had worked his way into one of the most successful real estate offices in our area as one of it’s top producers. He had invested in real estate himself.. buying rental properties at a good price and immediately renting them.

Then.. the real estate market fell. rents fell. and he went back to his “old” job… the one where he scrimped and saved for a decade or two to invest in his new career.. and after exhausting his substantial savings paying the difference between the rental income and his mortgages and trying without any success to sell the properties… the bank is now calling in his loans without any option to refinance.

i met this man because he came to repair my washing machine… but his story is so common right now that he could be any one of a number of my friends and family.

He thinks it will take at least a decade for the housing market to recover because the current round of foreclosures are now happening to people who have exhausted their savings and have jobs that could pay refinanced mortgages if banks would refinance… but they won’t… not even with substantial balloons 10/15/20 years in the future.

Well educated career professionals are having difficulty finding jobs .. and often when they do finally return to work they are self employed contract workers without benefits of any kind or are underemployed in the service sector.

the current average for an unemployed person to find a job is around 3 years.

How bad does it have to get before you dismiss speeches like the one given by Paul Ryan the moment he starts telling you it isn’t really that bad?

You really want to turn our government back over to the clowns that created this mess.. to some idiot who tells you deregulation is the answer in the face of the uncontrolled greed that nearly decimated our economy?

Where is your critical thinking when you read that stuff?

Here’s the ugly truth.. American corporations are benefiting from this “downturn” at record rates. Why on earth would they want to kill what they see as the goose that provides such high short term profits?

If this market fails.. that is if our economy takes a complete nose dive.. they are counting on emerging markets in other countries to support their businesses. They do not have a vested interest in the United States any more. What is good for American corporations may in fact be very bad for Americans.

But it’s a good story and republicans like Ryan keep repeating it because Americans keep buying it in spite of all the evidence to the contrary.

yup.. the same people who want to balance the American budget on the backs of the old, the disabled, children, workers,the unemployed… those are the same people who bankrupted the pensions those people counted on to finance their family’s dreams and their golden years…

the same people who think the latest mortgage mess was just a blip in the financial market that needed correction while the evictions continue at record rates.

and btw.. the same people who have a vested interest in controlling the media and who have systematically bankrupted news organizations in favor of centralized disinformation sources …

WAKE UP! It is not in your best interests to read this kind of self serving drivel and nod along with the arguments that will ultimately put us all on the street.

It’s all well and good to propose a roadmap for financial recovery that that GAO says is feasible…

following through on that proposal.. if it was implemented in it’s entirety is an entirely different matter.

and it is NOT the only solution… just the only solution that maintains the status quo for American Corporations who do business abroad and for the very wealthy.

The republicans had full control of our government’s financial health… what they did with that control is likely more indicative of what they would do with it if they were returned to power than any roadmap proposed by a junior representative.

In the second George W election.. the St Paul newspaper endorsed George.. while admitting that he hadn’t followed through on a single campaign promise.. it was still possible that he might…

I occasionally ride the bike path at Alki (never on weekends) and am amazed at the people that don’t seem to get what the bicycle symbol on the path means. I’m more than willing to share the path with baby strollers, skateboards or anything with wheels and there’s a perfectly good walking path parallel to the bike path with a walking symbol on it. And yet, just this past week, I passed several groups of 3 and 4 walking side-by-side on the bike path, blocking everyone else. When I slowed down and dinged my bell in advance, I got snide remarks. I always say “thank you” when people move to let me pass, but this week there were a couple of groups that acted like I had no right to interrupt their leisure stroll on the bike path and let me know that I should ride in the street – like that’s a lot safer. It just doesn’t seem like it should be that hard for everyone to share. Maybe it is the “me” culture.

Ha ha, real funny – except now it’s even more seriously JUNK and will end up in a landfill it’s gone but I doubt someone actually picked it up and placed it in their living room…

No harm leaving it by the dumpster with a plan to get rid of it shortly and in a responsible manner. I’m a big fan of Second Use. I think calling for salvage is a great alternative to the dump (and dumping).

And btw, I was clear on the couch being trashed by your house, nothing to do with the Church. I mistakenly read the second post as if the church was getting rid of the torn down wood like the jerks who dumped the couch.

Mike – Love the history!

We currently have a ‘peek-a-boo’ view of the Mountain from some parts of the front yard, mostly due to the 2 story house across the street. At some point this house might have had a nice view from the front porch but now the best we can get is standing on the roof :-)

I had the very very sad experience today of witnessing a cat get hit by a car. I pulled over and my husband and I gathered kitty up and took him directly to Five Corners Emergency Animal Hospital in Burien.

We held him and comforted him, and got him to a place where they could treat him, but he was too badly injured and didn’t make it.

I am so sorry. I did everything I could do, and he was just too badly injured.

Please know your kitty was held and comforted and cuddled, and didn’t die alone on the side of the road.

I am pretty certain it was a male cat. He was solid black with no white markings at all. Fairly thick fur, but not long, and his tail appeared slightly short for his body. He had a prominent nose, pointy face, and very yellow eyes. He was an adult cat, likely over 2 years old. He was clearly loved, as his teeth were clean and his claws were recently trimmed.

Again, I’m so sorry. I hope that knowing what happened is more comforting than being afraid at what could have happened. And I hope it’s some comfort that he wasn’t alone.

Heh, I was bashing Hillcrest when it was first built back in the mid-late ’70’s.

The house I lived in throughout my high school years, and for nearly two years beyond, (1978) was on 102nd in Arbor Heights.

We originally had an excellent view of the Mountain from the kitchen window/back deck. In fact, my guardian’s husband used to put an “R” on the calendar, on the days the Mountain was out.

As soon as Hillcrest went up, with it’s highly peaked roof, our view went away. Although, IIRC, we still had a peek-a-boo.

I kinda had mixed feelings, (I mean I was seriously irrtiated with the church at the time), because my parents were married in the original Hillcrest (on 35th, current home of Mars Hill), in 1951.

Cyclists should not be on sidewalks and should slow way, way down when in the vicinity of any pedestrian. Both cars and bicycles are required by law to yield to pedestrians, which doesn’t necessarily mean it happens on a regular basis. I was seriously injured & hospitalized after being struck HARD by a bicycle cop who sped through a red light and creamed me in a crosswalk downtown. Not a pleasant experience, and it changed my view of cyclists – and cops.

Exactly! The problem is that in order for the ‘zipper’ merge to work, the people that are already in the correct lane need to start spacing themselves properly once it’s time for someone in the other lane to merge in front of them, i.e., start slowing down and leave a car’s length of space in front of them.

Unfortunately, this rarely, if ever, happens. People that have already merge feel pissed that others have zipped by them and then don’t allow them to merge in smoothly. When in fact, it is the people that merge too early that are the main cause of the backups. But don’t tell them that – they’ll only get pissed off and make things worse.

SDOT communications director Richard Sheridan wrote to WSB:

“The city is proposing to rechannelize Admiral Way, however, to lower vehicle speeds and enhance safety for all users. Adding bicycle facilities is not the primary driver for the project for improving this roadway.”

If this is true, why is the project being proposed through SDOT’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Program? Why do the proposed engineer drawings read, “Seattle Master Plan Implementation, SW Admiral Way (Olga to Avalon)”?

Interesting fact- the Seattle Pedestrian Master Plan’s map (online) with Tier 1- High Priority Areas for Crossing the Roadway, does NOT include this section of Admiral Way as a priority for improvements. In fact, Admiral Way is in the 5th (lowest of 5 total) priority area. So why is this major change of a Primary Arterial being proposed?

Even in the Bicycle Master Plan, there is no recommendation of a “rechannelization” to only 1 lane down Admiral hill. Instead, the Bicycle Master Plan recommends removing parking in order to add “median crossing islands or a full median” along with bicycle lanes- (this actually might be a good idea just uphill of City View St, adding a center turn median for more vehicle & possible pedestrian safety on the downhill run).

The master plan aslo recommends “climbing” lanes for bicycles on steep hills, and allowing “faster-moving, downhill bicyclists to have a shared-lane marking…where there is not enough space for standard bicycle lanes on both sides.”

Isn’t that what several bicyclers have written on this blog- that a sharrow lane downhill is actually safer downhill when bikes are esentially travelling the same speed as vehicles? Combined with a properly signed merge zone for vehicles going to the WS bridge (“zipper system”) and solid white striping (no cross zone), the right hand lane would not carry the last minute bargers, and would be more open to vehicles that need the lane for the right turn, as well as busses and bicycles.

Finally, in the SDOT online crosswalk project section for Admiral Way (from 2007), there is this conclusion, “However, given the importance of Admiral Way SW as a motor vehicle travel route, SDOT could not recommend a reduction in the number of travel lanes at this time.”

So, where is the required analysis for this new rechannelization proposal?

No no, don’t bash the Church!

They did not put the couch there – some other ‘generous’ person dumped it on the parking strip because it’s a convenient place to pull over. Also just happens to be across the street from my house.

The pile of wood will be over by the dumpster and will be available to anyone who wants some wood. That was more of an FYI. They are actually planning on doing the ecologically sound thing and having Second Use Salvage come and pick up some of it.

Thanks so much for ‘bumping’ us… I am still heartbroken and not a day goes by that I don’t check Craigslist, the shelters, this forum, etc…. I am impressed by the quality of these posts. This is the kind of discussion I hoped to encourage.

Those who prefer a cap may like the CLEAR bill cosponsored by Senators Cantwell and Collins. (http://cantwell.senate.gov/issues/Cantwell%20Report.pdf) Their Cap and Dividend bill auctions permits. 75% of the revenue is distributed to the public. I see it as a good compromise. It provides price brackets. The dividend and price brackets make it close enough to the carbon tax I support that I would gladly vote for it. My only concern is that the price brackets ramp up too slowly. That can be fixed later if necessary.
