My buses regularly run red lights, block intersections, speed, cut off cars, etc. Sometimes it’s scary, but I’ll admit it’s often fun.

The speed limit is the MAXIMUM speed you’re ever allowed to drive under ideal conditions, not the speed you’re entitled to drive at any given time. If you slid into the intersection when the light changed, you were driving too fast for conditions and not paying attention to the changing light. You got what you deserved. Please do not waste my tax dollars tying up our court system to weasel out of your punishment. If traffic fines are too much for you to afford, consider obeying traffic laws or take the bus next time.

DP, thanks for the article. It was a trip! As for the Admiral work, I don’t know if it will make things better for cyclists. Admiral from Olga to the bridge is part of my regular route, and I usually ride down the right lane at speed limit (which is still not fast enough for some people) and up the hill on the sidewalk. A dedicated lane downhill might be nice when it’s raining, so I could feel safe slowing down, but usually this stretch is ok. I think I would continue to take the sidewalk uphill.

The stretch of road from Olga to Starbucks I avoid at all costs. I don’t know if that stretch is part of the plan, but to narrow that to one lane would be a huge improvement, most of all to pedestrians who have no safe place to cross, and I think cars would also benefit with a much safer road.

As far as having a lane on the road vs a dedicated bike trail, both are nice, I usually prefer road to path. There really is no such thing as a dedicated bike trail, as there will also be roller bladers, dog walkers, very new learners, speed walkers, stroller pushers, you name it. Trails are nice, but I see them more as recreation than as a network of roads to get you somewhere.

I live just off that intersection and am tickled with both the red light camera and speed enforcement on 35th. I used to avoid the 35th freeway and chose Delridge as the safer alternative :( now I can safely use it.

that white van and the speed warning signs have really slowed down traffic and have certainly made me more aware of my speed…

History has been very kind to the Founding Fathers and thats being very very nice. When you have a little time, find a few history books about America NOT written by Americans for use by grade school kids. You would be shocked at how different they are. Slaves, rape, etc are just a few issues that have been whitewashed out. Howard Zinn is a great place to start and easy enough to find. (and one of my favorite professors in college)

Glenn Becks shows about the founders dealt directly with the issue of slavery and how the founders treated their slaves. In fact most of the founding fathers wanted to abolish slavery and tried to pass legislation to end it twenty years after ratification.

Also did you know that the first slave owner in America was formerly an indentured servant who gained his “freedom” then had indentured servants. Unfortunately the indentured servant lost a court battle and became the property of that man. That land owner who won and had formerly been an indentured servant was black.

At about the same time a White landowner had three servants run off. He caught them and took them to court. Two were white and one was black. The two white people had to spend five more years as indentured servants. The black man had his freedom taken away. It was government who interfered with these men’s rights and slowly brought about slavery.

Slavery could not be abolished in the US until January 1 1808 because there were three slave states at the constituttional convention in 1787. 1789 they abolished slavery in any new territory. 1794 they banned the exportation of slaves. 1808 they banned the importation of slaves. Unfortunately in 1820 they repealed the anti slavery law and put in the Missouri compromise. It became worse after that.

First guy shot in the American Revolution was black. Crispus Attucks. In Philadelphia read about Richard Allen and Absolon Jones and the yellow fever outbreak.

Once Woodrow Wilson was out of office, Harding turned the country around in 18 months. He and the congress reversed quite a few of the Progressive legislation and made the twenties a successful time. Calvin Coolidge carried on a lot of that success. Unfortunately Herbert Hoover made bad Choices and policy and the seeds of the depression were sewn. FDR and his policies extended the depression.

The last stimulus promised shovel ready projects. That didn’t spur the economy. Instead some of it was used on research in Russia and non domestic studies and projects. There is still about 50 billion left from that. Why not use that?

If Obama had come out early in his term and had pushed infrastructure building and funding I am certain I would have supported some of it. This new one and middle class tax cut extensions sounds like a panic move to me.

So I will re-iterate. If Bush and the Republicans did cause all the woes of the country then you are damning a large and out of control Federal government. Why then would you support even more growth and deficit spending from the current Democratically controlled congress and Presidency? Why are you supporting the War in Afghanistan where we are not doing so well. Maybe we shouldn’t have gone to Iraq but we did. We deposed a despot and helped an country become a fledgling Democracy. Those brave soldiers did not die in vain. We achieved the objective.

Seems to me you should be advocating a Libertarian hybrid government. (rich winks).

I’m free in the morning until about 3 in the afternoon. On September 11th, 2001, I was part of the vigil at the International Fountain in Seattle Center. I later lit a candle and left flowers at our Statue of Liberty and then took flowers to my local firehouse. I would happily take part, lending my support for the respect of the Koran, Muslims, peace and neighborly love. I like the idea of returning to our West Seattle Statue of Liberty for this event.

Let me start by welcoming you to the blog and apparently to driving as well. I do not have difficulties stopping in the rain. Over the years, I have noticed some patterns I will share with you now, I hope they help. A traffic light will turn yellow prior to turning red, to indicate that a reduction of speed should occur. If the speed limit is 35 mph, you should not have been traveling at that rate so close to the intersection, causing you to slide into it. I do not attempt to stop abruptly; I reduce my speed gradually so that I do not slide around. I read the blog, warning us to drive more carefully because it was the first day of school for most students in West Seattle. I listen to the forecast that explained it would be wet on the roads. From experience I know wet roads are slick. It is for the above mentioned reasons I believe you were driving recklessly and deserve the ticket you generated when your car was photographed in the intersection sideways. Feel free to take the bus downtown, or just take your ticket like a man. You earned it!

However you decide to get the word out, you must figure a way for it to be a headline worthy action. This guy is obviously a sociopath. The reason he is getting so much attention is because of the shock factor. This kind of shit sells papers and ad space. If you want to get a message out to the world that this guy is crazy and a radical, and us folks here in Seattle are against it, you must do so in a way that gets attention and sells ad space…just as he has done. If it doesn’t make headlines, or shock, or appall the general public, then it won’t get the attention necessary to get the word out. We live in a country of people and events defined by thirty second sound bites. You must take advantage of this fact to get your issue into the mix. I can’t say what you must do to achieve this, but you MUST achieve this to get your word out. Sad, isn’t it?

Has any one had trouble stopping at these camera lights when its raining? I just slid into the intersection side ways today & the camera took my picture mind you i was going exactly 35 when I attempted to stop for the light. Now i will need to go downtown i will then pay for parking go to the municipal building explain this to the judge & he is only going to cut my ticket in half. So i just lost a days pay & payed for parking & that adds up to a little more than the ticket was?@#$%*. charlabob: Good luck on ‘taking back’ religion. I mean, it’s a nice idea, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. In fact, I don’t think it CAN happen.

Unfortunately, there will always be a number of bullies and other mean-spirited running around out there, and I’m afraid they will never have a hard time finding religious justifications for their cruelty, regardless of the particular religious text they rely on for “guidance.”

Zionist Jews (and there are many) claim that the Torah gives them a right to occupy Palestine and to treat everyone there who’s not Jewish as a second-class citizen.

Radical Muslims (and there are many) feel the Koran justifies the taking of life in the name of the faith, and they can cite you the passages to prove it.

Extremist Christians (including some in very high places) feel that America is on a “civilizing mission” in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere. And if they should happen to bring about the Apocalypse in course of civilizing people? Why, that’s all right. They’re just fulfilling Biblical prophecy!

Show me a religion with a fool-proof mechanism to keep out the haters and the crazies, and I’ll show you a religion that never made it onto the world stage.

Now, having said that, I am well aware that there are many good and loving people who use religion to justify what THEY do as well. In fact, I believe that good religionists far outnumber bad religionists. However, I think I’m in the Carson camp on this one: We need to move beyond religion all together if we’re going to survive as a species, because religion has proven itself singularly inept at helping us unite in the face of common threats.

Think about it. If we were living in a secular society right now, instead of the religious-influenced one we are living in, it wouldn’t even occur to these nut jobs in Florida to burn a Koran. Because it wouldn’t mean anything.

How about a Q’uran/Bible/Torah (who did I leave out) reading at the Statue of Liberty plaza on Alki Saturday? We organized peace vigils in less time than this early in the Iraq war.
