Last Saturday while walking on Alki, I tripped on a high edge of the sidewalk and went down hard! My left shoulder hit as well as my right knee and right elbow. The intense pain, fear and humility was overwhelming and I burst into tears. My Phone was in pieces(cover came off).
Along came two strangers, I believe Fran and Brad-hope I got the names right! They were so kind and tried to help me up but the pain in my left shoulder prevented me from doing anything but laying still. They offered encouragement and Fran reassembled my phone so I could call for my Husband. They were exactly who I needed at that time-I felt so alone!
I asked my two new friends to bow down so I could see their faces as all I could see at the time were their legs and shoes! As they did, I felt so touched to put faces to the kindness they gave me. Fran said “I know you! You’ve walked here years ago! I saw the man who revived you!” She was referring to the time and near the same place I fell down from a heart attack five years ago! I was without a heartbeat and survived! All my angels were in place to administer CPR, defibrillator and summon an ambulance that was just blocks away.
My husband finally arrived and called for an aid car. Fran and Brad wished me the best and left as the aid car arrived and EMT’s were gathering around to do the wonderful things they do for us. I was soon at Harborview ER and discovered I had fractured my left humerus bone. Fortunately, I didn’t need a cast but a specially knotted sling that enabled the bone to start healing. Painful week since then but my heart was warmed by the memories of my two friends and all the people driving along Alki who stopped to offer assistance!
I wish I knew more of what happened five years ago as I don’t remember anything after I passed out. Last Saturday showed me there are still angels out there among us. THANK YOU!
Am I the only one who thinks this topic deserves the worst post of the year award? You are seriously coming on a message board to complain about slow down signs? I agree they shouldn’t be in the middle of the road but I am not sure how a parent putting out a slow down sign while their kids are playing outside makes them a bad parent.
Do you get angry when you hear children laughing? Does a child’s smile bring pure rage to you soul?
I am just older than a millennial and all I hear about from the older generation is how great things used to be when kids played outside instead of playing video games. Now we have this post. How dare parents/kids ask cars to slow down while they ride a bike or play whiffle ball. Give me a break.
Obviously there are exceptions to this like putting the sign in the middle of the street or on a busy street but several of my neighbors use these signs and like anyone with basic understanding I do not have a problem with it.
Maybe try being a good neighbor instead of needlessly asking parents trying to make the neighborhood safer for their kids.
“Instead, teach your kids to stay out of the street (you know, where 2 ton+ cars drive), stop expecting drivers to be personally responsible for your children”
I cannot begin to tell you how strongly I disagree with this statement. The streets belong to everyone, not just cars. My child is seven years old and I’ve been teaching her how to ride her bicycle on the street since she was five years old. We ride bikes on the street to get to Walgreens. We ride bikes on the street to get to the library.
Drivers of 2-ton vehicles have an extreme responsibility to control their cars so they do not hit a child (or adult) who is using the street to travel. If signs help change driver behavior then I’m all for them.
Yes, these cars get in our way when we are trying to ride bikes to get to our destination. But that’s just how it goes — cars have a right to use the streets too. But car drivers – in control of a 2 ton vehicle capable of traveling 100+ MPH – have an absolute responsibility to drive very slowly and carefully anywhere there are children using the street.
Also, to those parents with kids, slow down when your on MY road just as YOU expect me to slow down on yours. Living near a school I see parents fly down my street with kids in the car and then fly back up without kids. It’s really annoying that you’d drive like that on someone else’s street when you know better. Maybe the better solution is to get people to stop using residential side streets as their own personal shortcut.
You know.., it’s illegal to let your kids play in the street and the parents can be cited for reckless endangerment…
Many years ago, Some kids thought it would be funny to un-roll a fishing net and drag it across the street.., I was driving slowly over, but it hooked underneath the car and the reel struck one of the kids..The kids parents called the police, Only to find out that they would be cited for reckless endangerment.
SLOW DOWN signs, held by a yellow stick-like man have started littering our streets all over West Seattle. I can’t imagine there is a driver in West Seattle who wants to hit a child on their way to or from where ever they’re headed, and I agree that some drivers are driving faster that the established speed limit. As a matter of extreme safety, I encourage you parents who think you’re doing something useful, STOP with the SLOW DOWN signs. Instead, teach your kids to stay out of the street (you know, where 2 ton+ cars drive), stop expecting drivers to be personally responsible for your children, and (if you’re any kind of parent at all) take them to the park. There are no shortage of them in West Seattle. I know I will be attacked for writing this, and as important as you think your opinion is, just consider, it will not bring your mangled, lifeless child back from the grave. I am a courteous, cautious driver who makes every effort to obey traffic laws and yield right-of-way whenever appropriate. That said, I almost hit a child the other day (again) avoiding a distracting sign placed in the road (not on the side). Shame on the parent who let their loosely attended 4ish year old depend on a SLOW DOWN sign for safety while riding erratically in the street. Save a child’s life, take her to the park and keep her OUT of the road. In the meantime, I’m going to report to the police every time I see a SLOW DOWN sign in the street.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Neighbor

“PS…I’m a 55 yr old man and fireworks have been going off as far back as I can remember, do I like them, no, do they keep me awake at night, yes sometimes but they’ll probably keep going off until the day I leave this earth”
Seems like a very defeated attitude. Why? I don’t understand that. Public nuisances that a lot of people vocally dislike and want to end can be stopped. If 1 house on a block throws loud ragers every night, the police can step in with fines to address the problem. The same can be done with fireworks.
“so I can either ignore them or let my inner sole dwell on them and turn into a grumpy old man, what do you think?”
There’s a third option, work to get real enforcement of the issue. SPD could make a serious dent in their operating budget for the year in just two nights by ticketing anyone they see lighting anything bigger than sparklers. Set off a role of black-cats? That’s $5K. Set off mortar shells? That’s $5K for each round.
Taking a no-holds-barred approach for just one year would drive so much news everyone would know about it and maybe, just maybe, they’d drive or catch a bus south for the the 1-3 miles to WC/Burien to set them off instead. You know, where it’s actually legal? Here in my neighborhood during New Year’s the idiots across the street were setting off larger rockets (not penny-bottle rockets but not mortars) AT cars. SPD didn’t do anything about it even though I said I had video of them doing it repeatedly. That’s offensive. It shouldn’t take a serious accident before this changes but it’s only a matter of time before one of these tools sets a forest fire, or causes a car accident, or physically injures someone. Why is that an acceptable risk?

“My worry is that once an income tax is started it will go up, up, up, and municipalities and state agencies will still charge or pass new taxes further burdening everyone.”
This is exactly why we will never improve our tax system. Even when voters have a chance to move toward a fairer, more progressive tax system the defeatist attitude prevails. Just a couple of years ago there was an initiative that would have levied a small income tax on the most wealthy corporations and individuals in the state (I don’t remember the initiative number, you could look it up). It would have been enough to completely cover the costs of a state sponsored healthcare program and only affect a tiny portion of the populace. And it was something we all got to vote on, not something cooked up by legislators. Result? Not passed. Because “once they start an income tax…”
So, always a good topic for complaining, but no stomach, even among voters much less legislators, to do even the slightest thing to alter one of the most unfair and regressive tax systems among the 50 states.

So J242 did I say I was letting off fireworks as you commented, no I did not “The city already puts on a hell of a lot better fireworks show than you or any dozen people could hope to so why not appreciate it and let the rest of us get some sleep?!!?”
PS…I’m a 55 yr old man and fireworks have been going off as far back as I can remember, do I like them, no, do they keep me awake at night, yes sometimes but they’ll probably keep going off until the day I leave this earth so I can either ignore them or let my inner sole dwell on them and turn into a grumpy old man, what do you think?

Thank you!
TSurly, I appreciate your answer. My worry is that once an income tax is started it will go up, up, up, and municipalities and state agencies will still charge or pass new taxes further burdening everyone. With the political makeup of Olympia I sincerely doubt there will ever be a state income tax option. Democrats control the house and senate by the slimmest of margins and Inslee can’t do anything although I bet he wishes he could.
We all know we have to pay taxes. It is our duty as citizens.
Personally I want to throw out the federal tax system and simplify it. Exemptions are great for many people but many people do not take full advantage of it. I don’t see a change in the federal tax policy other than going up and down and special interests trying to get even more exemptions. Locally the current crop of City Council members are too tax happy.
On the 50 bus heading home to Admiral from Alaska Junction when driver slammed on the brakes, me, sitting in back of the bus with 4 year olds went flying. Not one person on the bus helped me up. Grandma with 2 now crying twins. To add insult to injury, a young man with ? Younger brother (like 12) looked up from his cell phone and then back down, resting his foot on my hand ! I had to pick up his darn foot and move it !
I grew up in a place where fireworks were rare and were a treat when they happened. I remember the anticipation before a fireworks show where we were eagerly awaiting dark skies and the adults were carefully inspecting the ignition area and making sure everything was safe. I remember the shows were special and we reacted to the colors with oohs and ahhs.
I never imagined what happens here in Seattle these days, which has gotten absurdly out-of-hand. The rolling thunder of explosions yesterday started early and lasted very late into the night, making bedtime for my child impossible and we’re paying the price for it today. Our dog spent the night in the bathroom scared out of his mind. The heart shaking booms are ridiculous. The amount of explosions is crazy. I miss just having a good time and not spending the night worried about our dog and our sleep and our neighborhood safety.
All of you who talk about “it’s just for one night”, “it’s your responsibility to take care of your dog”, etc are so inconsiderate. Many, many, many people are asking for you to listen to your neighbors and take your absurdly rude behavior elsewhere. I want to be able to celebrate this holiday, and the New Year, and every Seahawks game without this unreasonable infringement on my right to live my life peacefully in this neighborhood. Please, just listen to your neighbors imploring for your attention and respect, we will return it in kind.
I agree with you. I’m very close (about 3 of the long city blocks) to the city limits line where they are legal to set off, during certain hours on July 4th, but they go on before and beyond that, and I know what I’m hearing is much closer.
I don’t suffer from any PTSD like many of our Veterans do, but am annoyed and at time startled by the sound, but what really affects me is the smoke. I have COPD, asthma, and congestive heart failure which all affect my breathing, and I’m really feeling it tonight. Granted, I probably left the windows open too long, but even long after closing them am feeling great discomfort in my breathing.
But, the “patriots” (hold on a sec, they need to grab another beer) don’t give a crap. I’m supposed to do something like get the hell outta town, even though I don’t have a car, (but that doesn’t matter) to get to some breathable air. (Please note that nobody has ever told me that, but I figure it must be their answer considering what they tell dog owners to do). I’m tired as hell right now, and about 1 1/2 hours past my normal bedtime, but not sure I could get to sleep. I suppose, though, I should give it a try, after putting earplugs in, and eye drops since my eyes are now burning.
Mike
Yes, I said it… Idiots. Why do so many of our fellow citizens feel the need to harass their fellow citizens (many who are vets, many with pets, many with children) who cannot sleep or potentially end up going into a panic because of your fun at making thing go boom? Are you nothing more than selfish teenagers? How is that fair to service members, families with pets or families with kids? It’s just all about you isn’t it? Shame on you a$$#0les.
Shame on the lot of you. If you want to set off fireworks, drive just a few minutes south out of city limits where it’s actually, you know, LEGAL to do so. The lot of you should be hosed down with high PSI water cannons the moment you try to light one of your little fireworks.
The city already spends millions on a massive, spectacular fireworks event that you could never even remotely compare to so get over yourselves, respect your f’ing neighbors and knock it the f off!
Time to get SPD to earn thier operating budget in just a couple of nights. Go out and ticket these idiots setting of fireworks in city limits and fill up their coffers. I would hazard a bet that they could make their annual operating budget in just two nights (the 4th and new year’s eve) if they just did their jobs and ticketed these jerks!!!

Well, “Good for you Graciano”. Maybe you’d like to bring your cats over and spend the time it takes to get my toddler to sleep through the random booms all over the place? One person’s ILLEGAL fun shooting off bottle rockets should not be more important than the numerous vets, pets and kids out there. The city already puts on a hell of a lot better fireworks show than you or any dozen people could hope to so why not appreciate it and let the rest of us get some sleep?!!? (PS, I’m in my 30’s, I just have a 5am commute so the idiots around me piss me off. I’ve also been living in WS for almost 2 decades now so I’m not a recent transplant or anything)
In short, knock it off. Leave the fireworks to the professionals and if you’re not willing to? GTFO of Seattle city limits to set off your noise makers.
I’m not bothered by them, I turned on some Black Sabbath for my cat and he’s sound asleep.
Cat also likes Motley Crew and Metallica.
HMC Rich, I think most people have gone silent regarding any politics due to the complete hate and fear that is brewing in our country. If you did not vote for Hillary, you are a racist, a Nazi, it goes on and on. Trump is being compared to Hitler for God’s sake. My mind has been blown on the disrespect our country is displaying. And I can bet I will get SLAMMED for these comments, so hide and watch!
As for our local government , I would guess that the members of the WS community may actually agree that we have GOT to get new blood in our city council. I was SHOCKED that a Socialist was actually elected and now as Seattle edges ever so closely to that side of politics, I have to say after living here for over 30 years, I will not be here much longer. The once beautiful city is now becoming filthy dirty, over crowded and way too expensive. We are an exact repeat of what happened to San Francisco. From the politics, being a sanctuary city and now the homeless problem we have. I am sad to say I don’t think there is any turning back. But we were warned weren’t we? Just look north they used to say.
However I am a proud American who will celebrate tomorrow and thank God I am an American.
