Yes, I want to make West Seattle the island of Paradise with rows of palm trees and coconut trees.
It is a privilege to live in the Island of West Seattle and it is not a “right”.
If you cannot handle the traffic, you are welcome to move to the CHOP, nobody is forcing you to live here.
I like it when there is one one way to the West Seattle Island and charge a big toll for anybody who wants to come to the island.
Again, save the money and FUND the POLICE.

no bridge=less traffic=very quiet and maybe less crime.

    Posting for Michelle:

WEDDING RING FOUND: Hello West Seattle folks! A rather unusual story and one that I hope will have a happy ending. My teenage son was cleaning out his room this weekend, and came across a wedding ring he apparently found at Whale Tail playground near Alki Beach…FOUR YEARS AGO. I didn’t know he had found it and apparently he just put it on a shelf in his room where it has remained lo these many years. He said he found it in the beauty bark under the swings.
It’s a large men’s titanium ring, not sure of the size but slips easily over my thumb with room to spare. Here’s the interesting part – it has an unusual word engraved on the inside of the ring. Suffice to say, if someone knows the word it is probably theirs!
If you have any leads (or if this is your ring!) please drop a comment and get in touch. Thanks in advance for any help in reuniting ring with its rightful owner!

    Hi neighbors,

I moved into my house in West Seattle 30 years ago, and have been a weekly runner on Alki, and now both bike and run there almost every day. I am asking for support in approaching city government to relabel and “repurpose” the Alki Trail—-the part that is designated for bikes only! I’ll indicate what I’m asking for, give some background information and data, and then state the rationale.

    The Ask:

I am asking that the Trail, which is currently labeled with the same icon used in roadways for bikes only, 1. be labeled in words “For Runners and Wheels Only,” and, 2. for that part of the trail to have a dashed yellow line down the middle to indicate passable lanes.

    Background:

In these last 30 years using the trail almost every single week, I have noticed who uses it, and have actually spent a few separate hours recording its use. To be brief, depending on the season, day, and time of day—-apart from any marathons being run-—in aggregate the trail is used only slightly more by people on wheels than runners. In other words, it’s not just used by bicyclists. It’s used by a wide variety of wheels, but also by many runners.

My own reason for running on the Trail itself and not the sidewalk for pedestrians is that the wider avenue allows for more unobstructed running, where I’m not dodging pedestrians on the narrow sidewalk and risking injury to my fragile knees and back. Also, I like to run in a meditative state without dodging pedestrians or running onto the grass. Obviously, people on skates, scooters, and 1-4-person quadacycles consider it their trail, as well.

However, I have increasingly seen that part of the trail used by pedestrians standing and congregating around the trail, walking casually along it two to five people wide, or erratically crossing it, sometimes even sitting in lawn chairs camping from their cars on the trail. They essentially either block the trail or make it very difficult to navigate for those wanting to enjoy move along it unobstructed. It makes the experience of riding or running along the trail frustrating and dangerous, for the pedestrians and for people on wheels and running trying to dodge them.

And I have seen some spectacular accidents over the years. This has to do with the misuse of the trial by pedestrians as well as by people on wheels. One of the worst was a 4-person quadracycle riding along towards the left side of the trail (which they do often or they weave along it) who suddenly made a sharp right u-turn, so that a bicycle coming from behind rammed right into it. That person was put in an ambulance. I’ve seen someone open a car door onto the trail while a runner was running on the narrow outside ledge who hit their door. There’ve been several others. I doubt these are being reported.

I’ve also seen dozens and dozens of near misses!!! Bicyclists swerving to avoid pedestrians, bicycles swerving to avoid quadracycles and scooters, everyone trying to avoid people walking erratically or walking dogs on long leashes who are unpredictable or taking up much of the trail, children running into the trail causing scooters and bicyclists to swerve, quadricycles riding erratically and weaving along the road causing other wheels and runners to swerve to avoid them. This use of the trail by all involved (pedestrians, people on wheels and runners) again renders it frustrating and dangerous. Especially with West Seattle and Alki become more dense.

    Summary of the issues:

    1. The trail appears to be marked with the icon for bicycles only. It is essentially illegal for runners to use the trail. Yet, they do and have. There is no better alternative for them.
    2. Bicycles, for which the trail appears to be dedicated, already have an alternative in the labeled access to the roadway.
    3. Pedestrians also have dedicated places to walk and congregate: the sidewalk, the beach, and the grassy areas.
    4. People on wheels are using the trail in erratic and dangerous ways with no cognizance at all of the frustration and risk to others.
    5. With Alki getting increasingly crowded, accidents are happening and more will happen due to disregard for safety and the reality of it being a thoroughfare for wheels and runners.

    The rationale for my solution:

    1. Label the road in words so use is understood (as opposed to an icon image)
    2. Label it “For Wheels and Runners Only” so that:
    a. It finally includes runners who have been using it (with guilt in my case) for decades, allowing them to have a safe and enjoyable place to run;
    b. It is clear that it is open to other wheels,
    c. It is clear that it is not a pedestrian walkway or place to congregate, sit, camp, meander, or allow dogs to run on leash.
    3. Paint a dashed yellow line on the current bike-only part of the trail (similar to the line around Greenlake, only dashed) to reflect the reality that passing into the opposite lane is acceptable (and inevitable), so that:
    a. It controls traffic better and prevents accidents
    b. Discourages people on wheels from using the thoroughfare erratically, putting others at risk.
    c. Discourages and warns pedestrians all along the path who may park along the length or access the trail at any point to cross it expeditiously and look both ways before doing so.

In summary, this is an improvement in safety and enjoyment of the trail for the many varieties of wheels and runners who already use it. I’m not sure about next steps, or who in city government are the decision-makers for this project. If you agree with this plan, please help me make it a reality.

PSA… Ok I’ve had it with my friends, neighbors and West Seattle community having their very expensive catalytic converters stolen right from under their cars. Almost 600 stolen last year here and the thefts are up 1000%. The only way to prevent this is to actually do something. So at the very least, spray paint the cat with hi temp fluorescent paint. Better yet, have someone make a cage out of metal around the cat. You can go budget DIY or pay 100’s for something ready made. DIY? sure. If it slows them down, they’ll move on rather than risk being caught. But DO something about the underside of your car now before you are among the ones who have to deal with replacing a cat. How much to replace? Several thousand dollars.catalytic converter cage DIYCAT cage

Obviously, it isn’t simply a matter of disposing of them in a proper receptacle. (Then again, I’ve seen too many just tossed onto the ground – yechhh!) But, for the sake of our wildlife, particularly birds, please tear the loops that go around your ears. Birds can get their feet caught in the loops.

    Warning: R&R…
Just got back from a lovely bike ride and enjoyed touring some of the last remaining old-growth trees in West Seattle at Schmitz Park. Displayed in my opinion proper etiquette (e.g. going slow around other users, yielding when appropriate, and getting acknowledgement prior to passing) and said hello to many smiling faces! Despite that one couple was very aggressively educating me about the bike ban. Great, the only local trails don’t allow bikes. I guess I’ll deal with that but please be nice people! That’s it. Oh, and who the heck decided it’s a good idea to put stop signs on roundabouts?

    Copycat Nine Flavor Beef

I recently moved to the Midwest after spending almost a decade in West Seattle. I really missed the Nine Flavor Beef at Lee’s and so I created a copycat recipe which is insanely good. I modified the recipe from a copycat recipe of Wild Ginger’s Seven Flavor beef found here.

While both are considered fusion of Chinese and Thai I feel the Lee’s version is better because of the texture of the fried beef mixed with the additional flavors of lime and coconut. While rice is well suited here I prefer the Wild Ginger method of serving this on a platter of crisp stir-fried green and red onions, bean sprouts, and Thai basil leaves. To really go extreme, fry the basil separately in shallow oil so it crisps.

    Printable recipe is here.

    Ingredients
1/2 lb. beef flank or skirt steak
1 Tbsp. Fresh lemongrass, minced (1 stalk)
    1 Tbsp. honey
    1/2 tsp. Fresh ginger, minced
    1/2 tsp. Fresh garlic, minced
    1/2 tsp. fish sauce
1/2 tsp. dried Thai chili flakes
    1 tsp. five spice powder
    1 tsp. sesame oil
    1 tsp. kosher salt
    3 Tbsp. vegetable oil
1/2 can full fat coconut milk
    Juice of 1/2 lime
    1/3 cup chopped shallot
    20 Thai basil leaves
    2 Tbsp. hoisin sauce
1/4 green onions, sliced length wise
    1 1/2 cup bean sprouts
    1/4 cup red onions, sliced
    1 Tbsp. unsalted peanuts
    All purpose flour

    Preparation
    1. Prepare the beef by slicing in thin strips, cutting against the grain. Put the strips into a medium sized bowl.

    2. Combine the lemongrass, honey, ginger, garlic, fish sauce, dried chili flakes, five spice powder, sesame oil, salt, coconut milk, shallots, lime and vegetable oil in a medium sized bowl. Pour over the beef and using your hands work the marinade into the beef until beef is fully coated. Cover and chill for at least an hour to overnight. The longer the beef can marinate the stronger the flavor.

    3. Prepare the veggies for the stir fry. In an oiled and hot medium sized pan or wok stir fry the onions, bean sprouts and ten of the basil leaves. Be careful not to overcook as you want the vegetables still crisp. Remove from pan and set aside.

    4. In the same pan, fry the remaining basil leaves in vegetable oil for five minutes until crisp. Set aside on a paper towel. Prepare pan for deep frying by adding more oil.

    5. Remove beef from the marinade shaking excess marinade off. Set aside the marinade.

    6. In a small bowl, dredge beef in flour being sure to shake off any excess flour. Add the beef into the prepared pan and deep fry until lightly crisp. Remove beef and dredge the beef again.

    7. Remove beef. Drain excess oil from pan and on medium heat add the beef and hoisin sauce and rest of marinade and stir until the marinade reduces and the beef is well coated.

    8. Add the stir fried vegetables and basil into a large serving bowl. Add beef on top and garnish with the crispy basil and peanuts. Serve with rice if desired.

This is a thread about the West Seattle phenomena that I will now call, “PAINTED EMO STONES”. These are nice, decorative, small painted stones that were part of a few people’s yard landscaping decision to have in West Seattle. However, over time they have migrated throughout the landscape – I even have a couple that I have picked up on walks, myself.
They are adorable with bright institutional colors and sayings of complete random kindness, they can be irresistible to not want to have a better look, etc.
Note: The few “Painted Emo Stones” that I have I did not abscond with, and were not on any actual personal property, or were not being used seriously as landscape (were there only left to be seen as such).

Anyway, are West Seattle’s PAINTED EMO STONES a dangerous phenom? Do they harken of a summer too warm, or global issues such as this that are out of our control, yet that we have to keep in mind? Are they bad for migrating salmon, and the whale populations due to paint toxicity and their nearness to the sewer drains by the sidewalks that lead to the sea?

~ What Do They Do, Those “Painted Emo Stones”?

I said I’d update on how my 2nd Pfizer vaccine went and it didn’t go well for me. Got it at 3:30 on Wednesday felt good until around 8:00pm and then it hit my arm like I got hit with a sledgehammer the pain ran down from shoulder to hand and up my neck and into the ribcage area. UGH! Couldn’t sleep well from the pain even though I was taking Tylenol and drinking lots of water couldn’t eat and the smell of foods made my stomach turn. ugh again! Stayed in bed all day Thursday…Friday now, feel 85% better but still can’t eat stomach is still upset. I’ll get to 100% by tomorrow, hopefully.
As I mentioned upthread this is Waikikigirl…can never figure out how to log back onto the forums! LOL!

Hi Emu1121, you already posted this exact same concern previously about Origins. WSB responded that they have a valid curbside permit and have had one for months yet you’re posting again with the same concern. Are you looking for a different answer, just venting or what? I just searched for “Seattle curbside pickup permit process” and found a bunch of information including:

Interested in having a Curbside Priority Pick-Up Zone near your business? Here’s what you need to know:

Businesses can call or email 684-ROAD to request a Curbside Priority Pick-Up Zone. They should provide business name, address and contact information.

Staff will review requested locations to make sure a new zone will fit within the nearby curb regulations. Generally, we will install one new zone per block, so it may need to be located where it can serve several stores on the block.

Curbside Priority Pick-Up Zone signs are not assigned to specific businesses, and can be used among several businesses along the block.

I hope this answers your questions.

    Hello,

I hoping to get some clarification from the community and local businesses about “curbside” parking that has obviously become a normal practice because of Covid and food delivery services. My question is what steps need to be taken in order to get these reserved curbside pick up spaces, and how much city street parking these businesses are allowed to take up.

I live near the Whitaker on Edmunds/Fauntleroy and I think neighbors here would agree parking is a huge issue, not only because of the irregularities of ticketing but now understanding how to cope with/ respect these curbside areas to allow local businesses to best serve their customers.

For example, Sound and Fog, coffee shop has a city issued permit for their curbside pick up parking, with a 15 minute limit.
Also, there are food trucks that have obtained city issued permits to instate no parking and a towing penalty on Tuesday and Thursday in the area they occupy.

I understand these businesses have gone through the necessary process to have city issued permits, however what do we do about the other ones that don’t? In my neighborhood we have random signage changing in front of Origins Cannabis shop. I have noticed and conversed with neighbors and local business owners that they (origins) do not have a permit and seem to move the sign around everyday; taking up more and more city street parking. I believe it’s been reported to “Find it Fix it” (a very useful app. For these issues)
For the local community sake can we clarify this to avoid ticketing and towing?

FYI This business (Origins Cannabis Shop) has an enormous parking lot as is for their customers and tows regularly from there. I am just trying to clarify this for our neighbors and hopefully making businesses more responsible and accountable for reserving parking that should be available to local residents.
