JanSParticipantAim…I love the flash frozen fruit…it makes great “ice cream” in the Vita-mix, too. Instead of yogurt sometimes, add silken smooth tofu…gives it a nice consistency…:)
I’ll have to try blueberries and mango – yummmmm…so when exactly will those blueberry bushes be ready to produce, Erik? I may just have to make a sneaky trip down the hill…

SueParticipantwsChic, we found our rental house on Craigslist and got really lucky that it was the first place I called and we got it. At that price point, she should be able to find something here in WS though, however the dog might be a problem – most apartments seem to limit dogs to under 50 (or 25) pounds. My recommendation is that she should NOT rent at West Ridge Park or any property run by Allied Management – as soon as that management company took over the place went to hell and the rents went through the roof, while services diminished.

JiggersMemberHahahaha… everyone here knows that I’ve been trying to find a place to rent for awhile that’s cheaper than what I’m paying now which is obscene for a 660 sq ft studio $875. You have to know someone or take your chance with a weirdo, or pay an obnoxious amount if you want to live alone. Portland is cheaper than here. I don’t understand why she wants to move to a wetter more expensive climate.

JanSParticipantKeith…I appreciated the friendliness, too. OUr server stopped and asked if we were West Seattleites, in the neighborhood…I am, my friend wasn’t. They just seemed very interested that they made us feel welcome…it was very nice, indeed…

AimParticipantI’m a huge fan of smoothies.
Trader Joe’s or Cash n Carry for bags of flash-frozen fruit without sweeteners, Fred Meyer or Target for whey protein powder, and the rest is regular old Safeway.
I use:
1-2 cups frozen fruit. I love to combine blueberries and mangos
1/2 cup plain nonfat yogurt
1 scoop whey protein
splash of water as it’s blending to loosen it up if it gets too thick.
Occasionally I add a tsp of honey or a sprinkle of splenda if I want more sweetness. Or I just add half a banana.

in forum WSB Reader RecommendationswsChicMemberHello,
A good friend of mine is moving up from Portland and
needs to find a place to live, so far the search has been pretty overwhelming for her so I am trying to help out. Just wondering if anyone knows of a decent 1 bd/1bth apt under $1200/month that takes dogs (she has a 53lb boxer)
I would really appreciate any leads someone might have on this.

AnonymousInactive…. because his bid was ended by assassination and people like you read a subtext that wasn’t there…
I don’t for a second believe Hillary was inferring someone should assassinate Obama. However, she should have known this is a huge point of discussion in the black community, and has been since he announced. It is a very real fear that he will be shot if elected. Apparently our government feels the same since they assigned security around the clock for him before any other candidate.
The subtext is the mere utterance of the word. When people are talking about it in their daily lives and then your candidate’s chief rival uses the word, it has meaning. Period.
What other reference could she have used? How about simply saying other contests have been undecided at this point in our history. If someone ask when/who, you respond with a name. What possible reason would there be to say RFK was assassinated in June?

beachdrivegirlParticipantOne last comment before I am off for tonight. I do have to say for the poor hills campaign and how mean the press is to her….tear tear tear…it is a bit funny how they are what have kept her in this “race”. She was out weeks ago. And within the past week everyone realized it…soooo the press decided to create new headlines that insinuated Hills could still win because she was going to close in on the gap when they counted the delegates in Florida and Michigan. Ha Joke is even if they counted as is Obama still wins. So for any Hill fans out there it is time to start supporting your Democratic nominee Obama.

KeithMemberChecked it out with a pal last night. It’s a great addition to the neighborhood. My salmon was a little overdone but otherwise the food was really good. They have some unique cocktails and a nice wine list.
.
A good sign (to me) was the lively crowd eating and drinking at the bar around 10-11pm. An even better sign: NO ANNOYING TELEVISIONS! Best sign of all: the chef’s wife (and co-owner?) came over to introduce herself, see what we thought and thank us for coming.
beachdrivegirlParticipantI just think our government should take responsibility for the lack of regulations they placed on mortgage providers. The housing market wold not be in the crisis it is in if it were not for the lack of regulations that Republicans (Bush Administration) failed to put in place. So yes, I do think it is our countries responsibilty to find a solution and if we do not our economy and housing market will fail, IMO. And no Republican ever did answer how did McCains aides like being interviewed by the FBI today??? Sure does look good during election season.

KayleighMemberJoB, where did I say Hillary’s supporters are hillbillys, feminists, and bigots?
Look, you don’t get to make sh*t up and claim I said it when I didn’t.
Many of the people that voted for her in WVA are lower income whites who don’t like blacks—the former point of which was bragged about by the Hillary campaign. She has made it a campaign centerpiece that working class people are her main supporters. She bragged about it. She lords that fact over Obama.
Saying someone is uninformed because they believe something that isn’t true isn’t bigotry: it’s saying something that’s actually verifiable. Something like 11% believe Obama is a Muslim. He’s NOT a Muslim.
I’m tired of being considered elitist because I expect people of all levels of income and education to actually believe things that are TRUE, not made-up.
Now I’m tired of defending myself for crap I didn’t do. I deserve respect too and I take far more crap than you do here on this blog.
May 29, 2008 at 3:30 am #621223In reply to: Hot for Hillary
beachdrivegirlParticipantJoB my comment about demographics and working class have to do with the fact that the median income that voted for Obama was around a $3k difference(from 38000 to 41000) between W.Virginia “working class” voters and Oregon”elite” voters. Point being is it is a bunch of b.s. I am not calling you a liar but I am saying that you are trying to make your opinion fact and an opinion will NEVER be fact. And FYI I highly doubt Richardson will be VP. I think he would be a great choice I just doubt it.
And as far as I am concerned an opinion is a falsehood including my own. back it up with fact.

changingtimesMemberjust for the record, it is not always big dogs that attack, my bff has one of those little dogs you can dress up and take in your purse, the cutest thing ever, as long as your 5 feet away from it, it attacks!!! it bit a hole through her mastiffs ear :( i know that a small dog can not do as much damage as a big dog but just wanted to not put all the blame on the big guys.
May 29, 2008 at 3:07 am #622254In reply to: RANT: Highpoint dog owners
KenParticipantJust so people can target their remarks , I am male, 53 and buy my clothes and shoes from a big and tall catalog. I used to favor “direct action” to resolve conflicts but now that I am older, I prefer political solutions.
Back to the subject at hand…
Dog owners throughout Highpoint neighborhoods vary in their observation of the law. Some are scrupulous, some are repeat offenders and some switch back and forth depending on the circumstances. And some actually look around to see if anyone is watching before deciding whether to pick up the poo.
The guy with 3 labs will get a confrontation next time I see him walking up from the snake hill area with them off leash.
The older guy who only takes his mutt off leash to play fetch in the pocket park will probably be ignored for now since the dog is on leash 95% of the time.
I will contact the director of the Highpoint community center and the after school care based at highpoint/westseattle elem school as well as animal control if I see the guy using the elementary school playground as his private dog park again. The after school program uses that playground and the dog poo is as annoying to me as it is to other parents/caregivers who have to pick up kids after stepping or falling in it.
I have better things to do but it seems nothing happens without somebody pushing the civic cart along a bit from time to time.
JT, if your shy about confronting the free range dog owners at West Seattle Elementary playground, drop me an email and I will give you my cell number. I am not shy. :)
Final note. This is a rant forum. While there are rules and I am sure WSB has posted them, replies and even strong disagreements should be expected in a rant thread.
If you want to see it done with style and imagination, visit the rude pundit.
TrickParticipantShortage of Linguists were critical in Iraq. Not to have tea as you presume. Funny how we invade an arabic speaking country and have few linguists at our disposal.
Secondly, you misread the statement:
“I will not develop NEW nuclear weapons”
It doesn’t mean we won’t have them and be left with our pants down…my god.
Reducing nuclear weapons is a great goal, Why? because we taunt ours as much as anyone and why shouldn’t we lead by example. Reduction is good in order to pressure other countries, stable or not so we don’t have this panic gleeming over our heads.
It’s easy to be extreme in making statements, but before you do, read the words and don’t jump to conclusions so easily.
I like sarcasm, alot….but let’s not muddy the message so others take it hook-line and sinker like they do on the “F” Network.

inactiveMemberHey WSMom –
Went I started making them myself seven or eight years ago, I was able to buy GenSoy brand at a fair price at F. Meyer. GenSoy has a vanilla, choc and plain too, I think. They don’t use genetically modified anything, so if that’s a concern, you might want to try them. However, I soon discovered that I would get more bang for my buck if I bought bulk at Fred Meyer or a nutrition store. The trade-off is I may not be using unmodified soypowder…but I go through so much of it that I just couldn’t justify the $12 -$15/can for Gensoy. But, also, since I’ve been making them, many other canned brands have appeared which I simply haven’t bothered to try because I am OK with the bulk powder.
And, ff yoplait is simply fat-free Yoplait yogurt, sweetened with artificial sweetners, off the shelf at Safeway. But, gosh, there are a million types of yogurt out there to try…I just pick Yoplait because I like creamy yogurt with not too much tang that I can use for both smoothies and fruit/dessert. I can’t justify getting too spendy on the yogurt either, because I have about three servings a day….go through massive amounts of yogurt. I guess yogurt is just one of those very personal and subjective things.
;)
But, if anyone has better cost-effective offerings I’m not aware of, I’m open to hearing how they do it.
