This is an excerpt from a recent posting on the Garfield High School group page. Perhaps they’d let you have their piano, but as you see it will have to be picked up.
“A former Garfield family has an old upright piano that they are
willing to give to another family that will make good use of it. It
has been painted peach/red, but plays decently. It will probably need
a tuning. It is on the main floor of the house, but up some steps
(maybe 10) outside, so a professional mover or a sumi wrestler is
required to move it. Call Linda for more information. 282-9876″

DJSonstengMemberHey everyone,
I am EMT in the local Seattle/King County area so I thought I might be able to help you all out since I spend a lot of time at the local hospitals.
Highline- 16251 Sylvester Rd S- This is the main campus and the ER entrance is located just south of SW 160th St on 8th Ave SW. This is their main ER, the ER at 128th and Military Rd (Riverton Campus) is more of an urgent care. If you go to the Riverton Campus and your symptoms are more severe than they can handle, you are in active labor, or they need to admit you. They will trasfer you to the main campus by ambulance, which is aprox an $800 ride.
Harborview Medical Center- 325 9th Ave- Harborview is the only Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and regional burn center serving Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. They are ALWAYS busy and always packed. Harborview’s Centers of Emphasis for neurosciences, trauma, burns, reconstruction and rehabilitation, mentally ill and medically vulnerable, and AIDS/STD treatment provide leading edge teaching, research, and clinical care for all patients. They are also the only county hospital. Harborview gets the majority of the Airlifts from outside of seattle due to their level 1 rating. One of two major teaching hospitals for UW Medicine
Swedish First Hill-747 Broadway- The ER here is located on the West side of the building. They are fairly busy on a regular basis. They don’t really handle major Trauma.
This is what else is located at first hill:
Swedish Cancer Institute
Swedish Orthopedic Institute
Emergency Room
Emergency Room for Children
Eye Center
Health Education Classes
Joslin Diabetes Center
Medical Imaging Services
Pediatric Specialties
Primary Care
Surgical Services
Women’s Health & Childbirth Services
Swedish Cherry Hill-500-17th Avenue- The ER is located on the west side of the building.
This is whats offered at Cherry Hill:
The Swedish Heart and Vascular Institute
The Swedish Neuroscience Institute
Behavioral Health
Breast Center
Emergency Room
Executive Health Center
Orthopedics
Primary Care
Surgical Services
Rehabilitation
Wound Healing Center
Virgina Mason Medical Center- 1100 9th ave- The ERis located on the south side of the building. This ER is on the smaller side, but they are building a new one in the next few years.
UW Medical center-1959 NE Pacific -Among the top dozen medical centers in the United States as rated by U.S. News & World Report 2007 “America’s Best Hospitals. One of two major teaching hospitals for UW Medicine. This is quite a ways from West Seattle espically during rush hour.
Childrens Hospital-4800 Sand Point Way NE- Pretty much self explanitory. Most kids with trauma type injurys will go to Harborview if transported by ambulance or medics.
Valley Medical-400 South 43rd Street- South King county trauma center. Valley is a level III trauma center. They handle anything. This is a ways from West Seattle as well.
All the other hospitals in King County are a fair distance from West Seattle. The exception of is West Seattle Psychiatric Hospital @ 2600 SW Holden St. West Seattle Psych has the capacity to serve individuals who voluntarily seek psychiatric inpatient services. Case management, counseling, crisis stabilization services, group services, vocational services, domestic violence treatment, expanding community services program and child/adolescent psychiatry are other main services provided by the hospital.
I hope this information helps.

WesMemberErik, that’s funny. I always think of that old Almost Live! skit with all the white men taking off their shirts and blinding everyone. They used a mirror to exxagerate the relection in peoples eyes. Hilarious! Tanning too much is bad though to. I was in Sarasota, Florida last year and the amount of elderly people with very brown, wrinkly skin was unbelievable. It was really disturbing and tanning taken too far. It really does harm the skin.

ErikParticipantThat gave me a flashback to last June on the beach in Jamaica. A middle aged bloke on his first day of holiday plops down on a chaise lounge not far from me and lathers up his whole body with SPF 1000 sunscreen to protect his very white english skin. Fortunately I left the next morning so I didn’t have to see if it worked.

And that’s just off the top of my head, I know there are a lot more out there!

in forum WSB Reader RecommendationsbigmarkMemberDoes anyone know of any place I could get some photos taken? These aren’t actually passport photos, they are photos for a Canadian citizenship certificate, so they have specific requirements about size, etc. I guess what I’m getting at is that this might be a little more complicated than something they could do at Bartell’s or Rite-Aid, so I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. Thanks.
January 15, 2008 at 12:57 am #586246Topic: Get Crazy/Naked In Burien This Weekend
in forum Open DiscussionscottsoMemberIt’s election time: Let’s get ‘Crazy/Naked’
BURIEN – Politics! Power! Romance! Music (including one song you can actually dance to) — it’s all there in Breeders Theater’s new production, Crazy/Naked.
This will be BT’s 13th production at E.B. Foote Winery (127-B S.W. 153rd Street, Burien).
“Crazy/Naked is largely based on things I’ve seen people do and heard them say in more than 30 years of watching and writing about politics,†says playwright T.M. Sell.
“People don’t pay enough attention to politics, at all levels, and sometimes they make choices that at least invite questions,†says Sell, who teaches political science at Highline College.
Crazy/Naked follows BT’s successful summer 2007 show, Out of the Nest.
The cast includes Yana Kesala, Eric Hartley, Luke Amundson, Kelly Johnson, J Howard Boyd, Teresa Widner, and Martin J. Mackenzie. Doug Knoop directs, with music by Nancy Warren.
Show dates are Jan. 18, 19, 23, 25, 26, 30, 31, Feb. 1, 2 at 7 p.m.; Jan. 20 and 27 – 2 p.m., and Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. The Jan. 30 show is a benefit for the Highline College Foundation.
The show includes tasting of E.B. Foote’s award winning wines and hors d’oeurves, all for only $20.
Tickets are available at the winery, 206-242-3852 and at Corky Cellars, 22511 Marine View Drive, Des Moines 206-824-9462.

AnonymousInactiveHi Bonnie,
Thanks for your input! It is ironic as our daughter was in kindergarten at Arbor Heights and we moved her to Roxhill. You are right about seeing the parents more at Arbor Heights, more parent involvement at that school that is for sure! But moving to Roxhill aside from this problem has been very positive for our daughter and family. I was told by the office staff at Roxhill that more of the parents work during the day than at Arbor Heights, I do remember a high number of stay-at-home-Moms at Arbor Heights.
I am hopeful that my suggest to the principal at Roxhill will not go unanswered, as she has so far been a very good listener.
When our daughter was in 1st grade earlier this year I talked with the only one other parent on a daily basis and most of those kids took the school bus. Now our daughter is in 2nd grade and the situation of the kids being on the bus is the same.
Girl Scouts here we come!!! :)
flipjackParticipantCheyenne,
Unless you planted it in a nice thick sealed pastic barrier at least 3 feet deep there is no way to contain it that I know of. You would have to comp;etely remove the bamboo and make sure you get all the rhizomes (roots) because any that are left in the ground will continue to travel and will even go through cement foundations.

addParticipantIt’s true that Seattle Public Schools are not allowed to publish family contact information. At our school (and probably others) the PTA takes responsibility for publishing the family/school directory. Perhaps you can ask Roxhill’s PTA if they would be willing to make this happen. It involves sending home a form asking for contact info and permission to publish for the school community only and then compiling/copying the info and distributing it back out. A tedious task, but definitely worth it!! You will only get those that opt in, but that’s better than nothing at all. I find that people need a deadline, lots of reminders, and then an extended deadline. :)
Don’t get me started on the problem with lack of RSVPs. I don’t know if it’s the Seattle area or just diminishing manners in general, but it is really annoying!! People who do not respond to invitations must have never thrown a party or planned an event. It is really tough to plan, budget, prepare, etc. without knowing how many people are actually going to show up.
marcoParticipantAaaah, thanks for the background info :)

AnonymousInactiveThanks for all your suggestions!! We would love for any of her classmates to come over to play, but we can’t because they need parental permission and without a way to contact the parent it can’t happen! Again, most of the parents of children at Roxhill work and whenever I drop off or pick up our daughter I make a point of going in the school and on the playground and still I don’t see 1 parent, all the kids must take the school bus home.
When I asked the front desk for a class list all I got were the first and last names of the kids, no email or phone number as they don’t give out that information.
From what our daughter is telling me is that most of the kids take the school bus to and from school and there are alot of latch-key kids with no adult supervision at home when they get home.
Our daughter takes swimming and has taken karate and dance in the past.
As for field trips, per the teacher most parents are at work and I have already been with the kids on 2 field trips and there was only one other parent and she didn’t speak English well.
We aren’t sure if the kids in her class have transporation to events and might be embarassed to tell us they don’t have a car.
January 14, 2008 at 7:08 pm #613870In reply to: Class directory
WSMomParticipantThis is a really hard situation. Have you talked with the school about their decision to not give out a directory? A directory is really needed for parents to connect so the children can connect. I’m sure you’re already doing some of these things, but here are some ideas off the top of my head…
Driving on fieldtrips, going to PTSA meetings and helping with class parties are ways to meet the parents. Your child’s classroom teacher might be able to help brainstorm some ways you can help your daughter connect with her classmates outside of the classroom. Have you invited any children from class over just to play after school? How about organizing the girls in your daughters class to all be on the same West Seattle Soccer Spring team together. Perhaps the teacher would send the forms home with the girls. There is also West Seattle Girls Softball League. Both of the organizations are terrific and will allow kids from the same school to request to play together. I hope this is helpful! Good luck!

AnonymousInactiveNo, unfortunately there is no class directory at Roxhill Elementary. It is heartbreaking that our daughter had to forgo a birthday party just because no one even bothered to RSVP. What more could I have done, I went to the school and handed out in person the invites, I went again to deliver cupcakes and both times I told the kids that if they wanted to come to the party we need to receive a call from an adult so we know how much food, etc… to bring.
I guess I an old fashion but I was always brought up to call or tell someone in person if I planned or not to go to a party.
As my husband told me it was not my place to contact people even if we had an email address or phone number, that would be tacky. If for some reason not everyone had transporation we would have helped them out.
We still would like to throw a party for our daughter but how do we when people don’t RSVP????
January 14, 2008 at 7:33 am #613846KenParticipantTo paraphrase my mom:
Nothing wrong with a bit of skepticism until someone loses an eye.
Election fraud is the correct term rather than voter fraud. Voter fraud is mostly a myth of the republicans who are intent on reducing turnout and disenfranchising voters of historically Democratic voting blocks. Note in this state the only recent cases of voter fraud uncovered in 2004 were all Republicans voting for Rossi.
Election fraud is much more difficult to detect and the safeguards run counter to the business model currently in use. The more speedy and efficient the process, the more vulnerable it is to single point failures and manipulation.
However you are in luck in King county. You can monitor the thing yourself. If you are a party member, you can even get paid to do so. Contact your district chair and tell them you wish to be an official observer for the next election. There are several people who are regulars in this function but often several slots open up.
Also any citizen with a pulse and a drivers license can sign in as an observer at most if not all of the venues where the ballots are received, stored, counted and tabulated.
I have done such duty myself. I also happen to know that while they probably will not comment on this thread, about 2/3rds of those who are long term employees of the King County elections offices, seem to live in West Seattle…. and are hardworking, honest people who would blow the whistle if anything obvious or underhanded was done within their sight or hearing.
The nature of the combination of Windows, Access database, and secrecy by the vendor Diebold of the underlying code and scripts, continue to fuel the suspicions of anyone who understands the nature of computers and the proven vulnerabilities of the various components used in the “black box” part of the tabulating software.
Open source code and transparency is the only viable fix as I see it but that is probably a long ways off here in the heart of Microsoft and the place where millions of people use computers without understanding either how they work or how they can be compromised without any indication to the user.
The shift to vote by mail will actually remove one of the potential failure points in the chain of custody of pre tabulated votes. The memory cards. The majority of the vulnerabilities discovered by computer scientist given access to various voting machines, could most easily be compromised via code introduced into memory cards.
That’s enough for tonight. If anyone wants a long rundown of the king county elections processes circa 2004-2006, let me know and I will pull out my notes and the boxes of records and reports I had to sign off on.

We’ve used them 3 times (side sewer replacement, minor basement repairs) and they’ve been awesome.
When we bought our house in 1995 there was an old flyer of some kind from the 1960’s stapled to a basement joist from O’Neill’s. They’ve been in business a long time with good customer service.
