Yes, placing the cage in a visible spot is a good idea, from what I’ve read and heard regarding trying to “capture” a pet bird that is stuck in a tree or some other high place.
.
Another idea, is if he has a favorite treat, or even toy that might entice him into the cage, if you could place it in or on the cage in a manner that he can see the item.

Best of luck to you. I had an African Grey that died a little over three years ago, from injuries due to a night fright. So, I understand the anxiety involved in being seperated from your friend, or more accurately, “kid”.
