Update:

Sadly, no found part yet– I was using wakeflood’s metal detector (thanks again!) with no luck before the kid came home from school, so I figured I’d wait until the kid came home to check if the detector picked up the metal in the part (there is one for each side of head) the kid *didn’t* lose. Sadly, it didn’t– not enough metal or not a powerful enough detector.

I went down to the rental place aeb suggested but alas, even theirs didn’t work. Nor did the welder’s magnet they let me borrow.

Well, as a friend said, “The lawnmower is sure to find it!”

Thanks for all the great ideas and help, I’m not giving up yet: the part hasn’t fallen off the planet, is has to be there *somewhere*!
