oceanParticipantAnyone have a really powerful metal detector that I can borrow for an hour? The kid lost a tiny part to his hearing gear. Of course it’s the part that happens to blend in perfectly with dirt and leaves, but at least we know in what 15′ square area it landed!
We tried one metal detector already but the part is sooo tiny (about a half-inch by a quarter inch!) so there is only a bit of metal in it and the detector we used wasn’t powerful enough.
Help! This part costs about $800, but most importantly, the kid *needs* the part.
Thank you very much!

mpentoParticipantSorry no metal dector but I was thinking you might be able to get one of those magnet tools for picking up screws etc. Just a thought Good luck

oceanParticipantThanks, mpento– great idea! I added another post asking about a magnet. It’d have to be pretty powerful, though, because the matching part barely sticks to our medical-grade magnet. (Who knew there was such a thing as a medical-grade magnet?)
cheers,

Janet M.ParticipantHi,
There will be a down side to this as many things will be sucked up,like the leaves,….but, it’s a thought. Place a nylon stocking over the end of a shop-vac. The dirt will get thru, but not the leaves and hopefully your tiny part will show its face and be stopped at the entrance. Good luck, and hopefully you can get a search party of neighbors out there to help you.

wakefloodParticipantI have a metal detector from Big 5 you’re welcome to. Still need one?

oceanParticipantHi, Janet-
We already tried vacuuming! Great minds, eh? But I’m guessing we missed an area here or there, and that is where the part it.
Wakeflood, thank you for the offer! Do you know how powerful it is? I’d hate to bother you if it is the same as the one we tried yesterday.
cheers

aebParticipantPacific Rim Equipment Rental on marginal way has metal detectors for rent. We used one to find my husband’s bedding band on Alki. It was very powerful and had a bunch of different settings (depending on what type of metal you are looking for, depth, etc.)so that could be an option. Good luck!

oceanParticipantThanks, aeb, great idea! I’ll call them tomorrow (while still hoping for one that I can borrow!).

wakefloodParticipantSorry, out getting dinner. It’s pretty good at picking up
Screws and nails under a few inches of soil. That sound strong enough?

wakefloodParticipantYes. Drop a note to my email wakeflood at gmail. Anything after 8am or even tonight if you want?

localmanParticipantOcean,
You probably already thought of this but have you thoroughly checked on the person of the child? Like actually in shoes between the socks and shoes or caught in shoe laces or even jacket pocket. All are places where a small item could find itself when falling from head height.
Good luck

oceanParticipantHi, Localman;
Yup, that was the second thing I did (after checking to see that the part was indeed off the unit, rather than the batteries having gone flat). Thanks for for the idea! There are stories of other kids whose parts have come off and ended up in peculiar places (wheel wells of cars, top hinges of doors, shopping carts, the list is pretty impressive!) — but this part does not have the medical-grade magnet like those parts, so it likely succumbed to gravity.
Off to try more with wakeflood’s metal detector!

oceanParticipantUpdate:
Sadly, no found part yet– I was using wakeflood’s metal detector (thanks again!) with no luck before the kid came home from school, so I figured I’d wait until the kid came home to check if the detector picked up the metal in the part (there is one for each side of head) the kid *didn’t* lose. Sadly, it didn’t– not enough metal or not a powerful enough detector.
I went down to the rental place aeb suggested but alas, even theirs didn’t work. Nor did the welder’s magnet they let me borrow.
Well, as a friend said, “The lawnmower is sure to find it!”
Thanks for all the great ideas and help, I’m not giving up yet: the part hasn’t fallen off the planet, is has to be there *somewhere*!
