“Combine a Low Tide beach walk with doing some good for the environment! Do you own a Kayak? Here is a great excuse to get it out on the water!”

9-11 am Sunday (July 21), Puget Soundkeeper Alliance will be teaming up with Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering to clean up any fireworks debris found following a private celebration on the 20th. They are looking for help from kayak AND shore-patrol volunteers, and will be removing “summertime trash” along the way. It starts at Emma Schmitz Memorial Overlook (4503 Beach Drive SW). Just show up – with or without a kayak; Puget Soundkeeper Alliance will be providing staff, trash grabbers, and bags; Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes will have pastries, coffee, and fruit for volunteers.

Without a cleanup effort, fireworks debris can become waterlogged and find its way into the delicate nearshore ecosystem. Fireworks debris contains potentially harmful residue that can be toxic to marine life.

Volunteers will be able to remove “summertime” trash as well. “We are asking everyone to help keep our beaches clean because it’s kind of a big deal!” says Laura James, Communications Coordinator for Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, ” There is an UNDERWATER garbage patch growing off the shores of West Seattle and it’s time to do what we can to be part of the SOLUTION.” James adds “If you can’t be a part of this cleanup, please check our website www.pugetsoundkeeper.org for future opportunities. ”

Puget Soundkeeper Alliance’s mission is to protect and preserve Puget Sound by monitoring, cleaning up and preventing pollutants from entering its waters.

That was quite an amazing fireworks display last night. All the neighbors west of the ridge were out to look at the fireworks. Amazing that at the end, we could hear applause coming from all over our neighborhood. Fun, even if it did leave a mess.
