Congratulations to the Seattle Lutheran High School Saints Track and Field team for an outstanding showing at the 1B Tri-District Championships in Port Angeles! 17 teams each for the boys and girls participated with the SELU girls finishing in 3rd and the boys placing 9th.
District champions include Taylor Stordahl in the 100m (qualified for the maximum four events) and Macey Crooks in the Pole Vault. Other qualifiers:

More post-season high-school sports tonight at Southwest Athletic Complex, as the district track and field meet continues. From the West Seattle High School coaching team, Doug Cooper updates us on the opening night Wednesday and looks ahead to tonight (Friday):
Head Track & Field Coach Will Harrison’s Wildcats did more damage to the school’s record books Wednesday evening at SWAC Track. In what may have been the most thrilling race of the day…the WSHS Boys 4×400 Relay team broke their own school record by running the second-fastest qualifying time of the day of 3:27.41…PR’s splits across the board for all relay team members (Rylee Farrison, Miles Hairston, Chaaka Trahan and Cass Elliott), sophomore anchor Cass Elliott ran a brilliant come-from-behind split of 49.3 seconds to secure first place in their qualifying heat. This 4×400 team is an exciting group of over-achievers who are looking to qualify for a shot to compete for a State Title in Tacoma next week.
WSHS Girls did some damage on the Field Events side as Natalie Fuller used a 5 inch PR jump of 16’5 feet in the LJ to qualify herself for next week’s State Championship meet in Tacoma. Fuller is also one of the top Triple Jumpers in the State and looks to qualify in that event Friday night at SWAC also. Meanwhile, Junior Maggie Cooper busted out a 6-inch PR of her own in the Pole Vault. Her 10’0 foot vault set a new school record for the event and propelled her right into next week’s State Championship Meet.
Other highlights included Cass Elliott edging out Nathan Hale’s Tremaine McAdams, the top-rated 300 hurdler in the State, for a first place in his 300 hurdles heat. Elliott’s time of 40.2, was the fastest preliminary qualifying time of all 300 Hurdlers. The 300 Hurdles race Friday evening at SWAC Track will feature three of the Top 5 300m hurdlers in the State…including Elliott and Senior Chaaka Trahan. Trahan is also the 3rd Ranked 110m Hurdler in the State.

Junior Hurdler / Pole-Vaulter Maggie Cooper [above] also qualified for District Finals in the 100m Hurdles.
Throwers in action Friday night, include Lexi Ioane, who looks to advance herself to the State meet in the Girls Shot Put … Ioane is the Metro Champion and leads the District in this event. Outstanding Sophomore Sprinter/Thrower Saoirse Cumming, the new school record holder in the Girls Javelin, will also attempt to advance to State in the Javelin on Friday.
The West Seattle Track team features some outstanding individual performers spanning a wide range of events. Please come and watch the kids Friday between 4:00 and 6:30 at SWAC Track (near Chief Sealth IHS) as they compete to qualify for next week’s State Championship meet in Tacoma.

The West Seattle High School Wildcats will play tomorrow night for third place in the district-championship tournament, after losing to Lake Washington tonight, 6-1, at Southwest Athletic Complex.
It was close through five innings, really a pitcher’s duel, with ace (and Metro League MVP) Gabby Wenn [above] on the mound for WSHS and Tori Bivens for LWHS. The Wildcats led 1-0 after Lucy Mead came in to score on an RBI single from Sam Hemmert.
In the sixth, concurrent with the arrival of rain, LWHS’s Kylisa Hull scored to tie it up [above], and then in the seventh, they loaded the bases before Marissa Ewald‘s triple to centerfield started the scoring that ended up 6-1, Kangaroos.
WSHS has already earned a spot in the state tournament, as the district’s top five will move on to that level, but in the meantime, they’ll play Eastside Catholic at SWAC tomorrow, 5 pm.
The Metro League-champion West Seattle High School Wildcats won their first game at the district softball tournament tonight, 4-0 over Bainbridge at the Southeast Athletic Complex. They’ll be back in West Seattle for their next game, 6 pm Thursday night vs. Lake Washington at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle).
The photos and report are from Sam Brown, who along with Billy Edwards, both Special Education staffers at West Seattle High School, coach the WSHS Special Olympics Unified Sports teams. If you’re not familiar with Unified sports, she explains, “These are teams that are made up of both Gen-ed Students (Partners) and Special Ed Students (athletes) who compete with other schools in the state.” The big news, from her announcement that went to the entire school:
This last Saturday, WSHS took two teams of Partners (gen – ed students) and Athletes (special education students) to the King County Special Olympics District soccer tournament.
Our “Player Development” team took the SILVER MEDAL, losing to Mercer Island in a double overtime situation [photo above]. Our “Division 1” team [top photo] took the GOLD MEDAL, beating Chief Sealth 3-1 – this allows our D-1 team to move on to the Washington State Special Olympics Championship Games, vying for an opportunity to take first place in the whole state.
This may seem like just another team and another announcement of athletic success – but it is SO much more than that. West Seattle is so blessed to have gen-ed student partners who are willing to volunteer their time and energy to make these games happen. They are bridging the stigmatic gap here in our school between gen – ed and special – ed students, creating relationships and silently advocating for equity all across the boards. West Seattle is also blessed to have spEd student athletes who are hard-working, motivated and so amazingly ATHLETIC!!
Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of this group of students. We will be hitting the State Tournament the last weekend in May, waiting on location details.

Whether you’re there to cheer, to run, to walk, to roll, you’re invited to Alki next Sunday morning (May 22nd) for the 2016 West Seattle 5K. It starts by 61st SW and SW Alki – usually after some opening stretches at and around Alki Statue of Liberty Plaza – and around quarter past 9, everybody heads out along Alki Avenue, which is closed to vehicles until late morning. The WS5K is presented by the West Seattle High School PTA, and this is its eighth year. If you’re not registered yet, you can do it online until Thursday, do it at West Seattle Runner (2743 California SW; WSB sponsor) during packet pickup noon-6 pm next Saturday, or show up at 8 am on race day and sign up (at a higher price). More athletic achievements for local students – this time at the Metro League track championships.
Doug Cooper, who coaches hurdles for the West Seattle High School track team, shared the videos and news of some big achievements in that sport:
Chaaka Trahan, a senior at West Seattle High School, ran a sizzling time of 14.20 seconds in the 110m high hurdles to win the league title in the event at Friday’s Metro League Championship meet at the SWAC track.
Trahan also won the Metro League title in the Long Jump with a jump of 22’7, and then added a third title to his collection for the day when he and fellow standout hurdler Cass Elliott and sprinters Rylee Farrison and Miles Hairston teamed up to smash yet another school record in the 4×400 relay and bring home the Metro League title in the process.
If all that wasn’t enough, Trahan added a 2nd place finish in one of the very best Metro League 300 hurdles finals in recent memory:

Trahan and Elliott finished 2nd (39.49 seconds) and 3rd (39.63) to Nathan Hale’s Tremaine McAdams (38.49). These times from their race on Friday vaulted Elliott, Trahan, and McAdams into the top 5 fastest recorded times in the entire State this season.
Trahan and Elliott led a strong cast of athletes on West Seattle’s Boys team to a 4th-place overall finish in the 16-school Seattle Metro League, which is considered by many to be the most competitive league in the state. All of them along with a great girls’ team which finished 8th in the league will be back in action at SWAC Track near Chief Sealth IHS this upcoming Wednesday (5/18) and Friday (5/20) for the Sea-King District Championship meet. Both meets kick off at 4:00 pm.
Cooper added that Trahan’s 14.2 in the 110 may have broken a half-century-old WSHS record – 14.3 by Al Karlberg in 1965 – but more research needs to be done, he explains, because “hand times were used back then and automated or converted automatic times are used now.”
He also adds that Quinn Wiley, a Chief Sealth International High School hurdler who trains with WSHS because Sealth has no hurdles coach on staff, won the girls’ 300 Metro League title – despite never hurdling until this year! She had, Cooper says, “one of the best times in the state, 45.93 seconds!”

9:02 PM: The West Seattle High School Wildcats, coached by WSHS athletic director Trevor Leopold, have just won the Metro League softball championship for the first time ever, beating Ballard 5-2.
They were behind 2-1 going into the top of the sixth, when winning pitcher Gabby Wenn hit a leadoff homer to tie it up, and her teammates added three more runs.
ADDED 11:55 PM: Wenn’s performance seemed inevitable, as she was honored before the game as Metro League MVP.
But for a while, it wasn’t clear that this rematch of last year’s Metro title game would end with a Westside win (last year, the Beavers won, 3-1).
Things started well: West Seattle’s #4, Lucy Mead, hit a leadoff triple off Ballard pitcher Lauren King.
#9, Sofia Sallas, sacrificed to bring her in, and it was quickly 1-0 Wildcats.
But that’s all the scoring WSHS did until the sixth.
Ballard, meantime, got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first, with Hannah Schubert hitting for both RBI’s, and that was it for the Beavers’ scoring for the entire game.
The second inning was three up, three down for both sides. The third also went relatively quickly except for a WSHS single by Sallas.
Moving on to the fourth, the game was intense but not tense. The between-innings tune was Neil Diamond’s 196x classic “Sweet Caroline,” and the WSHS girls sang along boisterously. Leadoff batter #13, Brynn Snodgrass, made it to second base on a Ballard bobble. She wasn’t easy to keep there:
But Ballard’s subsequent fielding eventually left Snodgrass stranded. The Beavers also got one runner on in the bottom of the fourth and left her stranded too.
The pattern repeated in the fifth – each team getting one player on base, but leaving her there; the Wildcats’ Mead hit a solid single to right field; Ballard’s Elizabeth Breckow bunted to get on base. But by the end of five, it was still Ballard 2, West Seattle 1.
That’s when everything changed, starting with Wenn’s leadoff homer off King. Snodgrass then hit a single to left field; #1, Berit Syltebo, sacrificed to get Snodgrass to second; then #16, Emma Atkinson, smacked a triple to center field, bringing Snodgrass in and giving WSHS the lead, 3-2.
Ballard changed pitchers, to #10, Megan Quigley-McAlister, but that didn’t stop WSHS.
Next up was #2, Rosa Grossi, who battled Quigley-McAlister in a big way before finally getting to first and bringing Atkinson in. Grossi in turn scored on Mead’s hit to center field, advancing the score to what became the final an inning and a half later, 5-2.
Now it’s on to the district tournament for the Wildcats, with their first game at 6 pm Tuesday (vs. either Seattle Prep or Bainbridge) at the Southeast Athletic Complex.

Don happened onto tonight’s photo session at Seacrest for the University of Washington rowers, who swept the Windermere Cup on Saturday (congratulations!).
A Metro League baseball-playoffs extra-innings thriller has just ended at Steve Cox Memorial Field tonight, between cross-peninsula rivals Chief Sealth International High School and West Seattle High School.
Sealth had led the whole game until the 7th, starting with 3 runs in the 1st.
But WSHS tied it up in the bottom of the 7th, and one inning later, the game ended with the Wildcats loading the bases with no outs and having the winning run walked in. Final score, 8-7 WSHS; they advance in the tournament, playing Eastside Catholic at noon, also at Steve Cox, tomorrow.

Soccer player(s) in the family? Two notes tonight – first, about an open training session tomorrow for one group of potential Premier players, and second, tryouts next week for two groups of potential Select players. First:
The Highline Soccer Association (HSA) currently represents more than 4,000 youth soccer players from the communities of Des Moines/Midway, Sea-Tac, West Highline, and West Seattle. The Association is made up of two Recreational Soccer Clubs (the West Seattle Soccer Club and the Highline Soccer Club), a Premier Soccer Club (the Highline Premier Football Club), and a Select Soccer Program (HSA Select).
Highline Premier FC, the highest level of training in the HSA, is hosting an open training session tomorrow, May 4, from 6-7:30 pm, at Walt Hundley Field in West Seattle, for boys born in 2007/08. Families with boys in this age group are encouraged to come out for a kick around, meet the coaches, ask the managers questions about the club, and let the boys have some fun and test their skills. Meantime, the HSA Select program continues its tryouts next week. On Monday (May 9th), girls born in 2004 try out 5-6:30 pm at Walt Hundley, where boys born in 2003 and 2004 try out 6:30-8 pm that same night. Full details on the tryouts can be found here, including how to register for tryouts.

Our area’s only rowing club, based in nearby South Park, has an invitation for you this Saturday (April 30th):
Duwamish Rowing Club continues to grow. Last season we added 3 “new” racing shells. They are new to us but not totally brand new, although they are all very fine raceable boats. The funding for the new boats came through the Duwamish River Opportunity Fund grant. None of the new boats came with names and so it’s time to name them and have a dedication party.
We will be honoring several of our donors and supporters including Bob and Dagmar Cronn, and Pacific Medical Centers. The dedication ceremony will be held at the 12th and Elmgrove Park across from the DRC boathouse at 4 pm on Saturday, April 30th. Refreshment to follow.

3:28 PM: Just announced by Chief Sealth International High School athletic director Ernest Policarpio:
Chief Sealth International High School welcomes Luther Carr III as the Seahawks’ newest head football coach.
Carr comes to Chief Sealth with over 21 years of coaching experience, 10 at the college Division 1 level. In 2012 to 2013, Coach Carr led the Seahawks to two playoff berths and two Huling Bowl victories.
The Chief Sealth community is excited to have Luther Carr back as a Seahawk.
Simon Iniguez coached the Sealth football team the past two seasons. (added) AD Policarpio confirms he left “in good standing.” We also confirmed with him that in a way, Coach Carr has never left – he’s continued on the teaching faculty at Denny International Middle School next door.
Exciting baseball game this afternoon as West Seattle High School hosted Chief Sealth International High School. Caryn Johnson, who’s been reporting on the Wildcats throughout the season, tells the story of their faceoff with the Seahawks:
A crosstown rivalry transpired this afternoon at Hiawatha Field between West Seattle and Sealth. Many West Seattleites came out on a sunny but chilly day to watch the “Battle in West Seattle.” It was a pitchers’ duel between Carson Wright for West Side and Nik Turcinec for Sealth.
The score remained very close through 5 innings with a score of 2-1, Sealth leading. Top of the 6th, Sealth would tack on two more insurance runs and West Seattle would answer with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Carson was able to complete the game, pitching through the 7th inning and not giving up any further scores.
Then it was a do or die for the Wildcats in the bottom of the 7th. Jack Page would start off with a single before a pitching change was made by Sealth. Senior Jamie Maples would come to the plate and hit a ground-rule double into center field. Senior Morgan McCullough would then be intentionally walked to load the bases.
Next batter to the plate would be sophomore Anthony Coats, who sent a deep sacrifice fly ball to center field to score Jack from third, and advance Jamie. Junior Andrew Burggraff would be next up to bat, during which the Sealth pitcher would be called on a balk to bring Jamie home and tie up the game. Burggraff would eventually draw a walk after a 9-pitch at bat to load the bases again. Then Senior Nathan Johnson [top photo] walked to the plate with one out. He would drop a slow roller by the pitcher that would allow Morgan to score the winning run from third. Nathan was immediately mobbed in the right field by his celebrating teammates.
In the end, West Seattle would come out on top, 5-4. Do we expect anything less from these two teams??? It was a great afternoon of baseball and to see so many come out and cheer on all of the locals was inspiring. This was the last home game for the West Seattle Seniors and they did not disappoint.
Final WSHS game of the regular season is on Wednesday against Seattle Prep at Steve Cox Field in White Center, at 3:30.
Wednesday is also when Sealth plays its last home game, 4 pm vs. Cleveland at Southwest Athletic Complex.

The Madison Middle School Ultimate Frisbee team took 3rd place in their division at the 2016 Spring Reign tournament this weekend in Burlington, WA. The team had a 3-0 record at the end of day one and entered day two in the winners bracket. They won their first game on day two, but came up just short of making it to the final in their 5th game. A decisive win in game six gave them 3rd place.
A great weekend overall in the rainy and wet conditions. Thanks to the coaches and parents and giant kudos to the players.

Cross-peninsula rivals West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School met on the diamond Friday afternoon. Final score in the game at Southwest Athletic Complex: Wildcats 19, Seahawks 9.
What’s ahead: Both teams have games on Monday (April 25th), both 4 pm at SWAC, against different teams – Sealth plays Cleveland and WSHS plays Seattle Prep.
Also on Monday, there’s an all-you-can-eat benefit for the WSHS Booster Club to help the softball team, 5-9 pm at Pecado Bueno in The Junction (4523 California SW). $15 adults/$10 kids under 12 for the all-you-can-eat taco bar, all proceeds from which will go to the fundraiser.
The winning pitcher in Chief Sealth International High School‘s 8-5 victory over Bainbridge had a big day at the plate as well as on the mound. Thanks to head coach Ernest Policarpio for the box score: Isaac Hamilton was Monday’s winning pitcher with 5 runs over 6.1 innings and also went 4 for 4 with 2 RBI. Next up for the Seahawks – Seattle Prep visits them at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle), 4 pm Wednesday.

The most prestigious high-school track meet in the state was held over the weekend, and West Seattle HS Track put their program on the map. The Pasco Invitational, hosted by Pasco High School on Saturday, April 16th, included 105 teams and over 1500 athletes. West Seattle had two individual winners at the event – Lani Taylor secured a victory in the 400m Dash in 56.11 seconds, and Chaaka Trahan won the Long Jump with a leap of 22 feet, 9.75 inches. Those marks put both athletes in the No. 1 spot in the current 3A state rankings. Taylor also placed 5th in the 200m Dash, and Trahan placed 6th in the 110m Hurdles and 9th in the 300m Hurdles. The Wildcats also had school record performances in the Boys’ High Jump (Nuradine Abdi at 6’2”) and Girls’ Triple Jump (Natalie Fuller, 35’9”). Other notable performances included Lexi Ioane taking 9th in the Shot Put and Cass Elliott placed 10th in the 300 Hurdles.

4:25 PM: The biggest sports event in West Seattle today has another hour-plus to go (until 5:30ish) at Alki Beach, this year’s “home” for the University of Washington Huskies. They’re hosting Oregon, on 2 courts. No admission charge; good crowd. More photos, and scores, later.

Here’s the roster. Checking the schedule, this appears to have been the one and only “home” match for the Huskies this year, the third one for the beach-volleyball program at UW, so they’re not expected back at Alki this year. We’ll check to see about next year.

Go root for the West Seattle High School Wildcats at Safeco Field tomorrow! There, they will face Bremerton’s Olympic HS after a tough loss at home to Roosevelt HS this afternoon. Thanks to Caryn Johnson for the report and the next three photos:
Friday afternoon was a little chilly, but another nice afternoon for baseball. This game would see 24 hits between the two teams and 16 runs scored. Junior Ryan Kimsey started on the mound for West Seattle against senior Tomiz Medina for Roosevelt. The Rough Riders would score in the first three innings to take an early 5-2 lead and then tacked on another two in the top of the 5th. West Seattle would come alive in the bottom of the 6th inning, with three hits, two walks and 4 runs scored. By the end of the inning it was all tied up. Unfortunately, the Wildcats would fall short and ended up losing 7-9.
Jamie Maples (photo above) and Anthony Coats had three hits each to produce 5 RBI’s between the two of them.
Defensively, Nathan Johnson (photo above) made two great catches in center field to keep the game close.

One of our routine Google Alerts delivered news of the Huskies-Ducks beach-volleyball match at 2:30 pm Saturday. This afternoon West Seattle lost a heartbreaker to Bishop Blanchet at Hiawatha. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, but just couldn’t hold on in the end, losing 3-6. Carson Wright pitched a great game for West Seattle and Daniel Lo came in to close out the 7th inning. But in the end, the bats of West Seattle just couldn’t produce enough runs to come out ahead.
Next game, Friday – West Seattle hosts Roosevelt at Hiawatha at 3:30PM
Remember that West Seattle will be playing Olympic HS (from Bremerton) on Saturday, April 16th at Safeco Field in the High School Baseball Classic at 12:30. Entry to the game is free and parking is $5 in the Safeco parking lot. Come out and cheer on the Wildcats!!
In a home game this afternoon, the Chief Sealth International High School baseball team beat Roosevelt, 5-4, and will play them again Friday.
