“AMAHL” FINALE: Last performance of Twelfth Night Productions‘ “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” 3 pm at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center. Take along the WSB coupon (see and print it here) to get 20% off adult admission. An unsolicited review came in from Ruthi Winter, who wrote:

It is only 45 minutes long and is a gem of a theater piece….lots of singing, acting, dancing and a full orchestra with choir, plus acting on the stage. The young boy who sings the Amahl part is delightful and Amahl’s mother is fabulous. You get a lot for your money. This is community theater at its best.

It’s the busiest day/night so far this new year. Among the highlights:

FAIRMOUNT PLAYGROUND PROJECT, MEETING #2: 6:30 tonight, it’s the second of two public meetings to talk about what’s in store for the playground at Fairmount Playfield, earmarked for an overhaul thanks to $170,000 from the Parks and Green Spaces Levy. Safety and accessibility improvements are the main goals of the project, but the overall design is up for public discussion and that’s what tonight is about. Here’s our coverage of the first meeting; the official notes are on the city webpage for the project. Tonight’s meeting is at High Point Library (35th/Raymond).

BE GREEN WHILE YOU CLEAN: Tonight’s the hands-on demonstration event that CoolMom is presenting at Bridge Park – they dub the format “make and take.” 7 pm; RSVP via Evite.

SOUTHWEST DISTRICT COUNCIL: Reps from neighborhood and community groups all around the western half of the peninsula meet at 7 tonight for the first time in two months, with the agenda including a transit discussion featuring SDOT reps, plus council co-chair Chas Redmond’s presentation on the West Seattle Tool Lending Library, a project that Sustainable West Seattle is spearheading. Since the last SWDC meeting, by the way, Redmond and Jim Del Ciello, who represents Admiral on the council, have been elected chair and vice chair, respectively, of the City Neighborhood Council. SWDC meets in the board room at South Seattle Community College (WSB sponsor).

NORTH DELRIDGE NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL: Scheduled for 6:30 pm, Delridge Library. Last time around, in December (WSB coverage here), the group started talking about setting up committees focused on specific neighborhood issues.

SEATTLE SCHOOL BOARD: As noted a few days ago, tonight’s agenda as the board meets at 6 pm at district HQ in SODO (map) includes finalizing details of this fall’s transition to the new Student Assignment Plan, as well as other action items such as approving the sale of more of the Fauntleroy Schoolhouse property. (If you can’t be there in person, the meeting will be on cable channel 22.)

Welcome to the 1st day of the 1st full week of 2010!

BACK TO SCHOOL! Winter break’s over.

TRAFFIC ALERT: If you drive through SODO, reminder that several major traffic alerts kick in today – here’s the heads-up we published last week.

NEW COUNTY COUNCILMEMBER? Three weeks ago, we reported live as the County Council spent 7 hours deciding not to decide (then) who will fill the remaining almost-year of County Executive Dow Constantine‘s former council term (representing West Seattle, White Center, Vashon, and some turf north and south). When they meet at 11 this morning, they’re expected to try again. Here’s what the Seattle Times (WSB partner) says could happen. The agenda’s here; watch live online here.

NEW CITY LEADERS: It’s inauguration day for Mayor Mike McGinn, City Attorney Pete Holmes, City Councilmembers Mike O’Brien and Sally Bagshaw (and re-swearing-in for returning Councilmembers Richard Conlin and Nick Licata). It’s all at City Hall, 2 pm, followed by a public reception around 3. Watch live online at seattlechannel.org.

WEST SEATTLE HI-YU FESTIVAL MEETING: Last meeting (WSB coverage here), Hi-Yu members chose the 2010 float theme, “Dreams Do Come True.” Tonight – 6:30 pm at St. John the Baptist Church Fellowship Hall – they’re scheduled to choose the 2010 button design.

(Other West Seattle trivia spots include Feedback Lounge [music @ 8 pm Tuesdays] and Skylark [6:45 pm Wednesdays], both WSB sponsors, and Beveridge Place Pub [8 pm Wednesdays].)

A few notes: No major community meetings this week, all the better to get ready for New Year’s Eve – check the West Seattle Holidays page for an updated list of ideas for Thursday night (eclectic list this year, including the West Side Story singalong at Admiral Theater, the ArtsWest Concert with the Stars, the Highland Park parade/party …). If you’re coming off a long holiday weekend/vacation, reminder that Metro has changes all week (explained here).

Update: Lights in the sky south of West Seattle = lanterns

8:52 PM: Two notes have come in on this, from Arbor Heights and Shorewood, so we’re posting them just in case anyone else (a) saw this and/or (b) knows what it was. First one was from Scott in Shorewood:

I live in Shorewood and about 7:45 I looked out my window and saw 3 orange/yellow flames in the sky. They kind of floated around for about 5 minutes and then slowly disappeared. Do you have any idea what this was or did anyone else see?

Second, from Matt in Arbor Heights:

My wife and I just saw three strange orange lights over Burien tonight around 7:45 pm. We live in the Arbor Heights area and were out back when we saw three orange lights in a line heading from the south to the west. They grew further and further apart to eventually going all different directions and then just fading away. Very strange. We just wanted to know if anyone else saw this. I tried to capture a video on my phone but nothing can be seen as they were to far away.

Flares? Fireworks? Airport-related? We might never know (though we’re checking around for corroboration and/or reports elsewhere), but at least if you saw them too, you’ll know it wasn’t necessarily a Christmas-night hallucination. 10:03 PM: In comments, Lesley has a theory – flying lanterns. 10:13 PM: And a more direct confirmation.

Today/tonight: Viaduct alert; council interviews; Hi-Yu looks ahead

TRAFFIC ALERT TODAY: SDOT is closing the southbound right-hand lane on the Alaskan Way Viaduct for railing repairs, 8 am-3:30 pm today, tomorrow and Wednesday, between South Massachusetts Street and South Holgate Street (a short stretch south of the stadiums, parallel to what’s marked on this map).

THIS MORNING: The four finalists for appointment to the King County Council seat that represents West Seattle – held by Dow Constantine until he became County Executive — are scheduled to be interviewed by councilmembers today, during their Committee of the Whole meeting, starting at 9:30 am. More here.

TONIGHT: West Seattle Hi-Yu‘s meeting will not only feature the group’s holiday celebration, but also the general-membership meeting that’s scheduled to choose the theme of next year’s festival. 6:30 pm, St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church (3050 California SW).

HOLIDAYS: Ongoing holiday events, giving opportunities, etc. – all on the West Seattle Holidays page.

RESERVOIR PARK PLAN: Residents of Highland Park have been brainstorming for years about the future of Westcrest Park and extra parkland to be created by the covering of its reservoir (including June’s HP Action Committee mini-summit); now, the work is well under way, and while the Parks Department says park construction won’t start till 2011, its official meetings to plan and design the space start tonight. 7 pm, High Point Community Center (map).

WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL: 7 pm, Southwest Community Center (map). Tonight’s agenda includes presentations on community murals, robbery prevention and the ReLeaf free-tree program.

ARTIST RECEPTION AT THE DUWAMISH LONGHOUSE: Photographer Joanne Petrina has been documenting the lives of Duwamish Tribe members for two years, and her work is on display at the almost-year-old longhouse in West Seattle ; tonight, you can meet her at an artist reception, 6 pm. Full details here. (Side note – there’s a holiday craft fair at the longhouse this weekend.)

LOW TIDE, AGAIN: As pointed out yesterday by Lura, tonight’s even lower than last night.

TWO AFTERNOON REMINDERS: The “alley vacation” component of the Admiral Safeway redevelopment project goes before the Seattle Design Commission at 2 pm today (previewed here); another planning meeting for the Admiral-area kiosks and signposts in the West Seattle Trails project (second one this week) starts at 4 pm at the West Seattle (Admiral) Library (map).

More on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar and the West Seattle Holidays page – which includes ongoing “giving tree” and other charity efforts as well as specific time-based events – LOTS of chances to make this a happier holiday for those going through tough times.

More of what’s up tonight – and beyond, including freebies!

MAYOR-ELECT’S THIRD TOWN HALL TONIGHT: While Mayor-Elect Mike McGinn hasn’t scheduled a Town Hall in West Seattle yet, the one he’s having tonight in Rainier Beach is meant for the “south” section of the city – including us – it’s at 7 pm, 8815 Seward Park Ave. S. (map).

BAKERY NOUVEAU OPEN HOUSE: More holiday fun – the renowned West Seattle bakery has its Holiday Open House 6-8 pm tonight in The Junction, not far from this next event:

OPENING NIGHT FOR “PLAID TIDINGS”: The holiday musical fave is back at ArtsWest again this year – as explained here. You can see Frankie, Sparky, Jinx, and Smudge in holiday form through December 27, and this Friday night is a special “Toast to the Holidays” – featuring wine! – more about that here.

THINKING ABOUT REMODELING/BUILDING A HOUSE? Ventana Construction (WSB sponsor) is offering another of their every-so-often free workshops – no obligation – lots of info. It’s at their office (the log-house-style building at 5458 California SW) tomorrow night, 6 pm, free but RSVP requested – contact info’s here.

Today/tonight preview — County Executive swearing-in edition

TODAY’S MAIN EVENT: As of shortly after 4 pm today, West Seattle will be home to the officeholders of two of the state’s three top political jobs. That status isn’t permanent, but even after the changing of the mayoral guard in January, we’ll still be home-‘hood to the guy who runs the county. Dow Constantine takes the oath of office downtown at Daniels Recital Hall (the former First United Methodist Church) this afternoon at 4, and everyone’s invited. (Photo at left is one of our pictures from his primary-election-night party.) Also on the docket today:

GIVE!!!! Two days till Turkey Day. The folks fed by our local food banks need you, if you’re able to give. Here’s a few stats explaining why – from the White Center Food Bank page on Facebook, Beth Grieser (West Seattle Volunteer Recognition winner) pulled a shift at WCFB today and reported: “We fed 85 families on our shift today – 287 families for the day. The White Center Food Bank is low on large turkeys 16 lbs, cranberry sauce and dinner rolls.” You can take donations to WCFB 8:30 am-5 pm; they serve the southern third of West Seattle but all the rest is in the territory of the West Seattle Food Bank and they will be thrilled to get donations too – 9 am-3 pm today.

GIVE, #2: Tonight at Porterhouse in the Admiral District, West Seattle Helpline benefits from a sock and underwear drive — bring ’em, new — 6-8 pm, hosted by Rogue Brewing (full details on Facebook).

GIVE BY BUYING: Wreaths and poinsettias, anyone? They’ll be on sale at Southwest Youth and Family Services today, 9 am-7 pm – walk-in sales are promised, and if you preordered one (or more), it’s pickup time.

CURRICULUM ALIGNMENT: It’s been another year of hot issues for Seattle Public Schools, and here’s another one: Aligning what’s taught to who, where and when. How will it affect the student(s) in your family – if at all? Come talk with district reps, 6:30 pm, West Seattle High School.

TRIVIA TIMES TWO: If your brain brims with factoids large and small, old and new, you have your choice of two venues tonight and every Tuesday night: In Morgan Junction, Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor, and now open 11:30 am daily) is all about the tunes, with rock ‘n’ roll trivia starting at 8; at the beach, Christo’s on Alki trivia, hosted by Tom Hutyler, new starting time, 7 pm. Cash prizes at both.

West Seattle (and/or West Seattleite) scenes: Catching up

Alki Point’s Guy Smith – known most recently for the tale of the newly returned brant as well as for the Joy D. Smith Wildlife Raft – photographed the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis this morning as it headed back to Bremerton. Further east along the shoreline, we stopped by the West Seattle/Alki Wildlife Habitat Project demonstration garden weeding/planting party on Saturday morning.

If you hadn’t guessed from the photos, the garden’s at Seacrest:

Now to the rainforest – actually, Arbor Heights second graders doing a rainforest ballet as part of a recent event at Pacific Northwest Ballet:

Teacher Angie Nall explains the McCaw Hall performance: “Kayti Bouljon, Manager of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Community Education Programs, led Arbor Heights’ students in a 2-month study of dance that connected ballet with a rainforest unit. What culminated was a rainforest ballet!” Not far from there, last week a group of West Seattle moms and babies were at Seattle Center to join in a call for action against toxic household products:

Those are some of the moms and babies in the West Seattle Stroller Strides group. Proprietor Athena Frederick says more than 40 Stroller Strides moms from around the city showed up to join in the “Million Baby Crawl” event – she shared photos including this one of West Seattle rocker Chris Ballew, performing his family-friendly music as Caspar Babypants:

Probable scam alert – and a particularly callous one at that

Just got this note from Steph. There could be a tiny chance it’s legit, but more likely just a particularly callous scam to try to wrangle your credit-card info:

I got a call a few minutes ago from a guy asking for a donation to the Seattle Officers group that will help police families. Not really sure the exact name. He asked if I could donate any amount of money using a credit card. I was going to but thought this might be one of those scam calls to get my card info. I asked him to send me info and I will donate then. I don’t know if that was a good idea. I feel bad if this was legit but it feels a little weird that they would be asking for money when one of their officers had just died but I don’t think they would do that. Anyways, I thought I would let you know to see if anyone else gets the call.

As published here and elsewhere, the only official way to donate to the Brenton Family Assistance Fund is by making a donation to it through any Bank of America branch. Time and time again, the warning is always “don’t give your credit card number to ANYONE over the phone.”

West Seattle biznotes: Exxon, Tony’s, Office Depot & more

EXXON CLOSED: Thanks to Bruce for the photo and the news that the 35th/Barton (map) ex-Exxon station has shut down. He’s been watching the site for a while and reports, “It became an independent gas retailer (having the lowest price in this immediate area for a month or two) but then they ran out … Over the summer I saw very little traffic at this store, even though a gas price was posted to lure people into stopping. While I was taking pictures a Jetta was filling up at the Propel BioDiesel pump [elsewhere on the site], so that is still on and functioning, at least for now.” (6:22 pm – See comment from “C-Rad re: reported 7-11 plans.)

TONY’S SEASONAL CLOSURE: Across the street from the ex-Exxon, Tony’s Produce has shut down for its seasonal closure; during the fall hiatus from the produce business, they usually reopen with Christmas trees.

OFFICE DEPOT “TAKING LONGER”: While walking around The Junction today, we peeked into the lower level of Capco Plaza – home to the new QFC – to look for signs of progress on the future Office Depot store. The space is still truly bare-bones, and no one was working inside, so we called building owner/developer Leon Capelouto to check on its status (we’d tried directly calling Office Depot some weeks back, but got no callbacks). He says some modifications to the space have pushed back the timetable a few months, and now it’s looking more likely Office Depot will open around February. “They’re still coming,” he said. Other tenant news in the building – we noticed the signage for this physical-therapy business on the east side of the building:

Capelouto said they just opened today. And a previously mentioned tenant, Desert Sun Tanning, has just gotten permits to start working on its space. One more note: Near the newly restored bus stop in front of the QFC, a worker was installing some enhancements – which he said were structures for people to lean on while awaiting buses.

MARTIAL ARTS/YOGA: Also during our walk, we bumped into Brian Presser of TouchTech Systems, always a good tipster about new-business sightings – most recently, this one – and he directed us to 42nd just south of Alaska, where a martial-arts/yoga business is opening, listing some of its specialties on the window:

And finally:

NEW ALLSTATE OFFICE: Christopher Price has just opened an Allstate Insurance office at 3862 Delridge (map) next to H&R Block. He says 4 licensed agents will be there, speaking English, Spanish and German; the phone number is 938-AUTO but they’re offering home/business/boat insurance too, plus financial services.

PUMPKIN DECORATING AT WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: It’s the Sunday before Halloween, and kids of all ages (even the “kid at heart” ages) are welcome to try their hand today. Meantime, here’s the Ripe ‘n’ Ready list for today’s market, open 10 am-2 pm at 44th/Alaska.

FAUNTLEROY CREEK DRUMMING: 5 pm, bring a drum if you have one (but don’t worry if you don’t – your presence is what matters) to the Fauntleroy Creek overlook across the street (and up the embankment) from the ferry dock (map). This is an annual tradition to help “call the salmon home” to the restored creek.

PLUS … other events this afternoon include the second of 2 days of Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival screenings at Admiral Theater, an open house at the brand-new Lien Animal Clinic building, and more – see the West Seattle Weekend Lineup!

Today/tonight: Dakota Place; Design Review x 2; fighting crime

*LOTS* of events/activities today/tonight on the WSB Events calendar – these are just 3 of the highlights: A 3:30 pm dedication ceremony at Dakota Place Park (map) … Design Review for The Kenney (6:30 pm, presentation JUST posted online, including image above) and Admiral Safeway (8 pm, presentation online), public comment welcome/encouraged as always, both reviews at Youngstown Arts Center, 4408 Delridge (map) … Crime-fighting info for southern West Seattle at the South Delridge/White Center Community Safety Coalition meeting, 6 pm, St. James Place, 9421 18th SW (map).

In other news tonight: Memorial benefit; 34th DDs; fire call

The power did NOT go out in two areas of West Seattle where major events were happening tonight – that photo’s from Kendall (of WA Beer Blog and Beer Church fame) during the Chef Sean Goff Memorial Fund benefit dinner/movie at The Sanctuary at Admiral. He reports “amazing food” and a good turnout. (We’re expecting another report on this later tonight. Meantime, remember there’s another benefit coming up November 7, sponsored by the Westenders Scooter Club, details here.) Also tonight: Watch the 34th District Democrats‘ website for updates on tonight’s meeting – your editor here had one foot out the door to go cover it as usual when the power outage forced a change in plans. (Midnight update – just got word from the 34th DDs, their update is up.)

Last but by no means least (we have a few more stories to publish before the night’s over, as usual), WSB contributing journalist Christopher Boffoli checked out a small breaking-news story post-power outage – Sylvan Way through High Point was partly blocked for about 20 minutes because of a fire call:

Turned out, Christopher reports, to have been touched off by “food on the stove” – no major damage, no injuries reported. A 128 bus was delayed.

Today/tonight: SSCC start; superintendent chat; SNAP; more

Busy day/night on the WSB Events calendar:

BACK TO SCHOOL: Today marks the start of fall-quarter classes at South Seattle Community College (WSB sponsor).

MEET THE SUPERINTENDENT: Concern or question about Seattle Public Schools? Superintendent Dr. Maria Goodloe-Johnson is on a “coffee hour” tour and tonight she’s at High Point Community Center, 6:50-8 pm.

SNAP: That stands for Seattle Neighborhoods Actively Prepare, and that’s the program to help you be ready in case of catastrophe. With the weather turning, it’s particularly timely for SNAP to offer its free class tonight, 6:30 pm, Southwest Library.

SOUTHWEST HEALTHY YOUTH PARTNERSHIP: Support efforts to keep local kids out of potentially deadly trouble, including drinking – join this volunteer group at 6 pm in the Madison Middle School library.

PARK-LEVY UPDATES: Want to know what’s being planned with the park-levy money voters approved last fall? The Parks and Green Spaces Levy Oversight Committee – which includes 3 West Seattleites – gets the latest reports when it meets tonight at Parks HQ downtown (Denny Park), 7 pm.

3 quick notes: Radio drill tonight; veg plants tomorrow; move it!

RADIO DRILL TONIGHT: Just a note that the West Seattle Community Hubs (explained here – a GREAT website) are testing a radio system that neighborhood reps will use in case of catastrophe – in case for example you are a radio aficionado, or pass someone involved in the drill, and overhear something that sounds alarming, 5:30-7 pm tonight, don’t worry, it’s only a drill.

PLANT SALE TOMORROW: If you are thinking about fall veggie gardening, Community Harvest of Southwest Seattle wants to see you at St. James Place (9421 18th SW) noon-3 pm tomorrow for its fall veggie-start sale. And bring your extra produce for donation to food banks!!!

AMERICA ON THE MOVE WEEK: West Seattle /Fauntleroy YMCA (WSB sponsor) has a week of special events planned – the main goal, consume 100 calories less and walk 2,000 steps more every day. Here’s the full list of special events – first ones are a family boot camp and fun walk tomorrow on Alki.
