First, a traffic alert if you are using Highway 99 today:

SOUTHBOUND 99 CLOSURE: WSDOT is scheduled to close southbound Highway 99 for construction work between Valley Street (lower Queen Anne) and the south end of the Battery Street Tunnel, 7 am-5 pm today.

WALK THE LABYRINTH AT TIBBETTS: At Tibbetts United Methodist Church (WSB sponsor), “We will have our rainbow labyrinth up all during Holy Week as a place of meditation and centering. The Labyrinth is made of heavy canvas and we ask that walkers remove shoes before starting. We will have hand-held labyrinths available for those who are mobility challenged and music will play softly in the background. CAMPBELL BUILDING LANDMARK HEARING: As previewed again here on Monday, today’s the day the Landmarks Preservation Board is scheduled to decide on whether to designate a second West Seattle Junction building as an official city landmark. This time it’s the Campbell Building (home to tenants including Cupcake Royale and City Mouse), across California/Alaska from the newly designated Hamm Building. Today’s hearing starts at 3:30 pm on the lower level of City Hall and this item is expected around 4:30 pm, with an opportunity for public comment. (601 5th Ave.)

GLOBAL READING CHALLENGE FINALS AT DENNY: Denny International Middle School principal Jeff Clark explains what you’re invited to watch tonight:

In elementary schools across Seattle, kids look forward to competing in the Global Reading Challenge in partnership with the Seattle Public Libraries. We wanted to continue this fun reading competition at the middle school level, but the libraries weren’t able to expand. As a result, in partnership with Aki Kurose Middle School and the Nesholm Family Foundation, we’ve made own event. Each team read ten exciting books to prepare. Thank you to the fantastic Denny 6th and 7th grade literacy teachers, Ms. Nestor, and Mr. Treistman for making this happen! Congratulations to the four teams moving on to the final Global Reading Challenge (tonight) against Aki Kurose Middle School:

The in-house competition was full of excitement with the 7th grade teams battling it out to the final lightning round, and the 6th grade teams competing through two full rounds of questions – amazing reading, everyone. For your planning purposes – we just heard about this, announced on the Seattle Public Library home page:

All locations of The Seattle Public Library and the book drops at Central Library will be closed Wednesday, March 29 for a staff in-service day. Regular operating hours will resume Thursday, March 30.

If you need to go to a library that day, the King County Library System‘s White Center branch isn’t far – 1409 SW 107th.

TINKERLAB DROP-IN: Work on a fun STEM-based craft at High Point Library after school, 4-5:30 pm. Free. (35th SW/SW Raymond)

WEST SEATTLE LITTLE LEAGUE WORK PARTY: 5:30 to dusk tonight is the first of two work parties to help West Seattle Little League recover from damage done by vandals last weekend, as the teams look ahead to the start of play. Here’s the update from WSLL:

Work parties will be Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th from 5:30 to dusk.

Work to be done:

• rebuilding pitching mound on south field – 1 volunteer needed
• filling trenches in infields (rain runoff has created trenches in both infields)
• sweeping loose material from outfield lips back into the skins
• top dressing edges of infield skins along edges of infield grasses
• resurfacing pitching mound areas in front of rubbers
• pressure washing north field bleachers and dugouts
• cleaning bulk material from hillside on north field parking area
• edging / weeding parking lot
• filling potholes on gravel road
• cleaning out bollard holes for easy locking of bollards
• painting of wooden bleachers
• hang new hooks in storage shed (hooks to be used for hanging of tools/ organization
• removing grass from under south field bleachers / spread rock under bleachers to match North Field bleachers
• installing fence cap on south field 1st base line close to scoreboard
• cleanup of bulk area
• weed eating fence lines – bring a weed eater if possible
• check scoreboard / microphone/ make sure all tech is working properly
• cleaning tools and machines
• cleaning doors / walls in bathrooms
• prep for painting of doors (and painting doors if possible)
• addressing graffiti in men’s room that is still visible
• general cleaning and prep of shack for opening day!
