West Seattle history: Husky Deli’s new, ‘old’ sign

Something old is something new in The Junction today – that sign that’s just gone up outside Husky Deli is a replica of the one that marked its location for more than thirty years. Husky proprietor Jack Miller gave us the heads-up it would be going up today; he told us in a quick video interview this morning that it’s something he’s wanted to do for a long time:

The sign is still being tweaked, and, as noted in the video, will be turned on tonight; we’ll add “after” photos later. Read about Husky’s history, from West Seattle 101, here.

P.S. Other local businesses have rediscovered their history – two and a half years ago, you might recall, we chronicled what turned up during Elliott Bay Brewing’s facade remodel (commenters added lots of great information); also on that side of the street, early work at the 4730 California site turned up a sign from a long-gone business.

West Seattle holidays: Wanted – Christmas/New Year’s biz info

 |   Holidays | West Seattle businesses | West Seattle news

With Christmas less than two weeks away, we are making the rounds again for the traditional WSB lists of coffee shop/restaurant holiday hours – specifically, who’s open Christmas Eve/Day and New Year’s Day, because those are the dates we’re more often asked about. If you have a West Seattle/White Center/South Park restaurant/coffee shop and know your plans, we appreciate a note – editor@westseattleblog.com – to save us/you the phone call. And while we’re not able to make a comprehensive list of other types of businesses, we would be happy to include them in the WSB Holiday Guide if we receive that info (for example, letting us know you’re open until X on Christmas Eve). Thanks, and watch for the links to those lists in the guide and our calendar soon!

P.S. We’re also still adding to the other areas of the guide, as the info comes in – from holiday events to religious services to giving opportunities – same e-mail address.

The majority of our business happens through word of mouth, and we could not be more grateful for our referrals! The best part of our job is that we are as much inspired by our amazing clients as they are by us. West Seattle – We Have That! 10 reasons to shop offline

EDITOR’S NOTE: Earlier this year, WSB started a series of stories about independent local businesses and why they matter more to a community like ours than you might realize. Then, the West Seattle: We Have That” campaign launched at midsummer. Now, we’re continuing to publish stories as part of the series – and inviting you into the conversation. Many of the reports are being underwritten by the West Seattle Junction Association, but not as ads – it’s their contribution to an issue of importance from Alki to Admiral to Westwood, Fauntleroy to Highland Park to North Delridge, and all over WS.

Tomorrow night is the next Shop Late Thursday in The Junction, one of many ways West Seattle shopkeepers – outside The Junction, too – are hoping to attract your shopping dollars this holiday season. As we have noted before in the ongoing series of West Seattle: We Have That! stories, they are also very aware that competitors are literally at your fingertips. So here are 10 reasons to consider shopping in person instead of/in addition to online:

#1 – Super-cute shops, great personalities

Shopping alone in your pajamas has its benefits, but there’s nothing like the personal connection you get in a boutique. Independent local retailers are your neighbors and they really know their stuff. They’ll answer your questions, serve as your personal shopper, tell you about the latest trends and offer a second opinion whenever you need one.

#2 – Seeing is believing

Followup: Inside The Bridge as it prepares to open new location

(MONDAY UPDATE: Jenny at The Bridge now says the new location opens THURSDAY at 5 pm)

The dilapidated exterior of 6301 California SW is now a memory, but the old Chuck and Sally’s Tavern sign lives on in the back of the building’s new incarnation as The Bridge. With it are two of the co-proprietors, Trevor Garand and Rita Dixson, in their Seahawks gear because they opened the new place to invitees for this afternoon’s game.

You should be able to watch the NEXT Seahawks game there, because they’re expecting to officially open on Friday (December 13th) Thursday 12/12.

The site is returning to life as a business for the first time since August 2007, when it abruptly closed, initially, as reported here in September of that year, with just a sign mentioning cooler problems. A “For Lease” sign went up in early 2011, but it continued to idle as a vandalized eyesore. Then this past May, as first reported here, Rita, Trevor, and partners Jenny Almukhtar and Ahmed Almukhtar signed a lease and confirmed The Bridge would renovate and move into the building. Its original building near 35th and Avalon, closed last week, is scheduled for demolition when a six-story, 160-unit, 162-parking-space mixed-use building goes up.

Who wants to sell marijuana? First West Seattle retail application

Thanks to Mike for the tip: The state’s second weekly list of recreational-marijuana business applicants (linked from this page) includes the first application for a retail location in West Seattle, for A Green Life, at 5435 California SW, same site as the storefront that’s been home to several medical-marijuana outlets in the past few years.

There are also two additional West Seattle filings for marijuana-growing licenses – Northwest Medicinal at 5420 26th SW and R&B Group at 3601 W. Marginal Way SW, same address as the Evergreen Herbal application reported here last week; R&B is also seeking a processor license. The state is midway through a one-month period of accepting applications from those wishing to become involved in the recreational-marijuana industry enabled by voters’ passage last year of Initiative 502. Next list is due out next Tuesday.

West Seattle Saturday highlights list #2: Special shopping day at independent local businesses

North to south, you’ll find shopping specials at many independent local businesses today. But don’t just make it a one-day thing, because all season long:

The WSB West Seattle Holiday Events and Info Guide includes a standing invitation for local businesses to let us know about their shopping events – open houses throughout the season, as well as this special day. Here’s what we’ve received word of for today, north to south – lots more out there, we’re sure, so if YOUR West Seattle business has something special going today, please let us know ASAP!

Ex-Allstar Fitness bankruptcy: Newly mailed notices NOT related to current ownership

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

Some confusion tonight regarding notices sent to past/present members of the former Allstar Fitness club at 2629 SW Andover in North Delridge.

We’ve heard from three people so far who received the notices in postal mail today and assumed they have something to do with current concerns at what has since last March been West Seattle Athletic Club.

The new notices do NOT have anything to do with current ownership.

They are part of the pre-existing bankruptcy proceedings for West Seattle Fitness, the official name of the ownership from the club was Allstar Fitness. You might recall that back before the club was sold to its current ownership, the previous ownership had been going through bankruptcy proceedings (here’s our coverage archive, newest to oldest) and there was some discussion of when members should get notices regarding those proceedings. According to images of the court documents in the new notices, they relate to a hearing December 20th on setting the amounts to be paid to people involved with those bankruptcy proceedings, including the trustee who for a time oversaw the former Allstar Fitness, and lawyers. The notices invite recipients to respond, and note that if no responses are received, the motions might be granted without a hearing.

We just checked the online file for that pre-existing bankruptcy case involving the prior owners, and that appears to be all that is going on (although we urge you to review anything you receive for you reading any legal-type notices you receive.

Separately, after a flurry of e-mails from members in recent days, we have been checking on the situation with the club under current ownership.

West Seattle scene: Sign time for The Bridge’s new location

10:27 AM: Perfect day to put up a sign! That’s what a crew from City Lights Sign Company is doing this morning at the new location of The Bridge at California/Graham, where six months of renovation work have made the old Chuck and Sally’s exterior a distant memory. Next Monday (December 2nd) – featuring the Seahawks on Monday Night Football – is the final day/night of operation at The Bridge’s current location at 4439 35th SW, making way for a 150+-apartment mixed-use development, and they’re inviting patrons and friends present and past to commemorate the closure with a group photo, set for 3 pm Sunday (December 1st). No exact date set for opening the new location but The Bridge’s Jenny Almukhtar describes it as “shortly after” the old one closes.

12:37 PM UPDATE: Went back for an “after” shot:

P.S. Back at the current location, per Jenny: “Starting today, we are offering an Open-Faced Turkey Sandwich with cranberry cream cheese, piled high with mashed potatoes, stuffing & gravy. Served with a side of green-bean casserole or a traditional Turkey Dinner with all the aforementioned sides, gobble, gobble. While supplies last!”

Who wants a marijuana license in West Seattle? State’s first applicant list

As the state gets closer to granting its first marijuana-selling licenses, it’s just published its first list of who’s seeking them. Reviewing the list for local applicants, here’s what we found: So far, no West Seattle applicants for a marijuana-retailer license; no West Seattle applicants for a marijuana-processor license, though there’s one in nearby Shorewood (Going Green, 2525 SW 102nd Lane); one West Seattle applicant for a marijuana-producer license, Evergreen Herbal, in the Riverside area at 3601 W. Marginal Way SW, seeking a Tier 3 license – described as “10,000 to 30,000 square feet of plant canopy.” The state says it will update this list weekly during the one-month application period, which ends on December 19th (more info here).

West Seattle holidays: Chamber ‘After Hours’ previews Westwood

Show of hands, now, who’s been naughty and who’s been nice? That’s Dave Montoure, West Seattle Chamber of Commerce board chair, doing the asking during the Chamber’s “After Hours” event at Westwood Village on Thursday night. Call it the first holiday party of the year, convened at Wyatt’s Jewelers (WSB sponsor):

The heart of the party was a sampler of Westwood businesses – including Massage Envy (WSB sponsor), whose therapist Gunnar offered five-minute samples:

Westwood’s Holiday Wonderland opens for Santa photos the day after Thanksgiving, two doors down from Pier 1.

Congrats to West Seattle’s ZippyDogs, national award-winners!

West Seattle-based entrepreneurs Elise Lindborg and Kelli Henderson will be in “the other Washington” later this week to accept a national award. Here’s the news release we received about how the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce will be honoring them:

Elise Lindborg and Kelli Henderson, leaders of ZippyDogs, a Seattle-based supplier of Made in USA and eco-friendly promotional products, will travel to Washington, D.C. on November 22 to be honored at the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) National Dinner. This black-tie gala is dedicated to celebrating leading LGBT business owners and entrepreneurs, corporations and supplier diversity advocates, as well as government and community leaders. From a competitive field of applicants, ZippyDogs was selected as LGBT Supplier of the Year.

The LGBT Supplier of the Year award recognizes an exemplary certified LGBT Business Enterprise® (LGBTBE®) for their outstanding achievement and contribution to the development of LGBT supplier diversity. ZippyDogs assists companies to market their business through the creative use of eco-friendly and Made in USA promotional products. Earlier this year, ZippyDogs customers responded with overwhelming satisfaction to a service survey and described the company as innovative, responsive, reliable, friendly, and “off the leash.” ZippyDogs is led by “Top Dog” Elise Lindborg and “Chili Dog” Kelli Henderson, who both attribute their company’s growth in part due to the NGLCC’s Supplier Diversity Initiative.

“The NGLCC has been pivotal to the success of ZippyDogs, and that makes this award extra special to us,” says Elise Lindborg. “Not only do we provide products that we are proud to sell to our clients, we take every opportunity to educate our customers about eco-friendly, Made in USA products, and supplier diversity. If we can help influence companies into this forward-thinking model of business, then we can wag our tails at the end of the day.” ZippyDogs has been in business since 2000; however, the last three years have seen sustained growth for ZippyDogs. Since purchasing their World Headquarters and becoming a LGBT certified business in 2010, they have hired two employees, won two government contracts, they are on par to make 2013 their best year in business yet.

The “World HQ” is in the north Morgan Junction area, as reported here when they celebrated its opening.

SCAM ALERT: Fake ‘City Light’ callers still buzzing businesses

|    Comments Off on SCAM ALERT: Fake ‘City Light’ callers still buzzing businesses
 |   Crime | West Seattle businesses | West Seattle news

Another West Seattle business has just received the scam call claiming that City Light will cut off their power immediately if money isn’t handed over. This time, the report comes from Wendy at Flower Lab in Admiral. We’ve reported on two others in the past week and a half – here and here. If you get this (or another) scam call, report it to police! It’s not new – as City Light explains here – but the scammers are gambling they’ll find someone who doesn’t know it’s fake, so spread the word, especially to businesses. West Seattle businesses: Architect, photographer collaborate for regional Green Building Slam presentation tonight

A presentation tonight at a regional event celebrating green-built projects will feature the work of two West Seattle businesses, one of which has added a new specialty as a result. Here’s their announcement:

Local businesses LD Arch Design and Holli with an i Photography want to share news of a recent collaboration – and two related opportunities.

LD Arch Design is pleased to announce that a Green Lake net-zero remodel project will be featured in the Northwest Eco Building Guild’s 10x10x10 Green Building Slam (tonight, November 16th). The Slam is an opportunity to see exciting new green building projects – it is a fast-paced evening with ten projects, ten minutes, ten slides each. More information and tickets can be found at the NW Eco Building Guild’s website.

The slides will feature some of the beautiful photos from Holli with an i Photography, which is how the story of collaboration began. Parie Hines (of LD Arch Design) has long been a fan of Holli Margell’s work, and approached Holli to see if she would be interested in architectural photography. The resulting photos have a uniquely warm and approachable feel to them. And Holli discovered in the process that she enjoys photographing people in their homes.

So Holli with an i Photography has a new opportunity for portraits called “Home Sweet Home” which focuses on photographing people in their home or garden. Parie’s own “Citrus Manor” home is the model for the new package, which can be found on Holli’s website here.

LD Arch Design is a WSB sponsor. There’s more information about tonight’s Green Building Slam, happening at the UW, here. In addition to that event, by the way, Holli with an i Photography is participating in the Fauntleroy Fine Art and Gift Show that continues today and tomorrow.

ADDED 11:43 AM SATURDAY: Parie tells us the event was moved to a larger venue so tickets are still available – check out the links above. But if you can’t get there, she says, “The 10 projects are on display at the AIA gallery downtown, and there will be
a reception on Tuesday the 19th at 5 pm. The projects will be on display until January 6th.”

Service Dog Academy to close storefront, expand medical-alert training

Mary McNeight, proprietor of Service Dog Academy, has announced she’s closing her storefront at 6040 California SW while expanding another line of her dog-training enterprise:

On World Diabetes Day, Service Dog Academy announces its upcoming pet dog training program closure on December 31st and expansion of Diabetic Alert Dog Training program.

I started Service Dog Academy after being frustrated with the Puget Sound region’s lack of qualified trainers to help me train my own service dog. Unfortunately numerous factors including the death of my father, the loss of a marriage, a business model that gave too much back to the community to my own financial detriment, a 26% increase in rent in one year, and numerous health crises that landed me in the hospital have resulted in a company that never made enough to allow me to draw a salary.

Despite winning two national dog-trainer awards and being a featured speaker at the 6,000+ member Association of Professional Dog Trainers conference this year, it was not enough publicity to keep our doors open in this economic climate.

Service Dog Academy will be closing our pet dog training location so that we may focus on raising and training medical alert dogs for Diabetes, Seizures, Narcolepsy, Migraines and Asthma.

AAA Washington: Welcome, new West Seattle Blog sponsor

Today we’re welcoming a new WSB sponsor, AAA Washington. AAA’s West Seattle team wants to make sure you know about everything AAA offers:

AAA Washington has been serving members since 1904. We opened our West Seattle office in 2004 and recently moved to our current location in Jefferson Square. You know us for our legendary emergency roadside assistance and traffic safety advocacy, but AAA offers much more.

Did you know that AAA Washington Insurance Agency is the largest personal-lines insurance agency in the state? Yes, we’re dedicated to helping you find the best coverage for your home, auto, life, boat, RV, and umbrella insurance needs. Three of our best insurance agents – Deb-e, Dane, and Linda – work right in your community. They invite you to come in and talk about your insurance coverage needs, and will provide you with a free insurance review.

AAA Travel is also the largest leisure travel agency in the state. Unlike many travel agencies these days, we don’t charge service fees for cruise or tour packages. Mary and Alison would like to help you make your vacation dreams come true! The West Seattle office Travel Store also offers luggage, travel accessories, destination guides, travel gear with identity theft protection features and many other travel items. Our West Seattle office has two member travel counselors, Kathleen and Debra, who can assist members with trip planning, maps, TripTik routings, and TourBook guides. Our members rave about how helpful our staff is when it is time to pack up the car and hit the road. Need a passport photo? It’ll just take a few minutes. International Driver’s License? We’re the only place in the state that offers them. Foreign currency for your international trip? While you don’t need to be a member to take advantage of all these services and products, members do receive special discounts and benefits.

Our West Seattle staff also wants you to know that giving back to the community and public service is a big part of our DNA at AAA. Through our “Soap for Hope” toiletry donation collection program and similar community outreach programs, we support local charities such as Seattle’s Sojourner Place. Unused toiletry donations (soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc.) can be dropped off year-round at the AAA West Seattle office.

The friendly and professional staff at AAA is proud to be a part of the West Seattle community and very pleased to sponsor the West Seattle Blog. We look forward to seeing you soon!

We thank AAA Washington for sponsoring independent, community-collaborative neighborhood news via WSB; find our current sponsor team listed in directory format here, and find info on joining the team by going here.

2nd ‘West Seattle: We Have That!’ report: We have change; what about its effects?

EDITOR’S NOTE: Earlier this year, WSB started a series of stories about independent local businesses and why they matter more to a community like ours than you might realize. Then, the West Seattle: We Have That” campaign launched at midsummer. Now, we’re continuing to publish stories as part of the series – and inviting you into the conversation. By Keith Creighton
Special to West Seattle Blog

This past month, my wife and I moved from a hill atop Morgan to that same hill a mile south in Gatewood. One of the biggest considerations we faced was trading more space for less view and giving up the easy walk to the Morgan and Alaska Junctions.

We’re not the only family facing big changes in West Seattle.

How will the surge of demolition and construction (California/Alaska, above), store closures/moves (Sweetie, Coffee to a Tea, Alki Arts) and chain introductions (including Fatburger on Alki and plans for Whole Foods Market, LA Fitness) affect the values of your home and the quality of your life? I asked several Junction-area residents and real estate pros to share their expertise:

Dawn Leverett of Windermere Real Estate
Katie Hildebrand and Kirsten Donovan of The Usonia Group/Keller Williams Realty
Jill Campbell of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northwest Real Estate

Can you put a price tag on the concept of walkability? What will happen if the big chains push mom and pop shops out of West Seattle? Is White Center becoming the new West Seattle? Read what the pros have to say and weigh in with your comments.

West Seattle biznotes: Updates, changes, winners!

HOTWIRE HISTORY, THE FOLLOWUP: Banish the gloom with the history-making “light bar” at Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor) – now up and running. As first reported here last month, and shown in several citywide-media reports since then, Hotwire has installed full-spectrum lights, to set up the city’s first “light bar.” See them – and bask in the glow – next time you’re at the coffeehouse next to The Junction’s post office, 4410 California SW.

BANK CHANGEOVER DATE SET: Also in The Junction, the date is set for the official transition of AmericanWest Bank (4022 SW Alaska) to HomeStreet Bank. We reported back in July that the change was on the way; a company spokesperson tells us the bank’s first day as HomeStreet will be December 9th, and the signage will be changed a day or two beforehand.

EQUILIBRIUM FITNESS MOVE: This business is leaving The Junction; November 14 is the date that the fitness studio expects to open its new location at 3270 California. Signs are already up; the storefront was previously Cloud City Skateboard Shop, which closed quietly a few months ago.

CARTER’S COMING TO WESTWOOD? According to city-permit records, the Carter’s chain of children’s-clothing shops is planning a location at Westwood Village. No date or other information; we have an inquiry out to the company.

TONY’S PRODUCE CLOSED FOR THE SEASON: Also in Westwood, in case you hadn’t already noticed from passing by – Tony’s produce stand at 35th/Barton is closed for its fall break before reopening with Christmas trees later this month.

SPEAKING OF CHRISTMAS TREES: Son-in-Law Tree Farm, most recently in the former Charlestown Café parking lot, plans a new West Seattle location this year – on Alki Beach, on the lot that holds Wheel Fun Rentals during the summer season, 2532 Alki SW, opening the day after Thanksgiving, November 29th. (Any other new tree lots/locations? Let us know for the WSB Holiday Guide, which is in the works right now.)

AND THE WINNERS ARE … Congratulations to local winners and runners-up in KING 5’s Best of Western Washington. The 200-plus-categories winners’ list is now online; reviewing it for locals, we see Metropolitan Market (WSB sponsor) as Best Gourmet Grocery, Salty’s (WSB sponsor) for Best Seafood, Best Brunch, and Best Outdoor Dining, Easy Street Records for Best Records/CDs, Bakery Nouveau as Best Bakery, and WSB, fourth year in a row – we never ask for votes, so we are especially grateful to get them. Congrats to all! P.S. West Seattle had one non-business winner too … Alki Beach was voted Best Pickup Place.

West Seattle biznews: About those Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices real-estate shingles you’re seeing

A new name started turning up today on a whole lot of real-estate shingles around West Seattle (and elsewhere). It’s the name you see on the signage with which we photographed Mike Gain today – a year and a half after his company Prudential Northwest Realty announced it had been bought by an entity affiliated with tycoon Warren Buffett. Now, it has a new name, described as “inspired” by that affiliation: Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northwest Real Estate. The change was celebrated at a company gathering at the Museum of Flight, where we found local agents including (below, from left) Travis Duty, Sean Jolly, Sonya Wind, Jeralee Knittel, and Steven Henke:

Gain is president/CEO of the newly rechristened company, which includes more than 350 agents working from six offices, in West Seattle as well as Burien, Bellevue, Federal Way, Kent, and Lynnwood, and is a WSB sponsor.
