West Seattle, Washington
13 Monday
3:12 PM: Seattle Police and Fire are headed to a reported crash at 35th and Kenyon. According to scanner traffic, a motorcycle rider is involved. That’s all we know so far; avoid the area for a while.

3:31 PM: No traffic effects; Seattle Fire has already left the scene. The motorcycle is on Kenyon just east of 35th; the only police left at the scene were talking with what appeared to be the rider, and another person.
6:14 PM: Thanks to the texter who sent word (and photo) of a crash in the 1700 block of Alki Avenue [map]. Seattle Fire has sent a medic response; the texter says it appears a vehicle almost hit a house. We’re en route to try to find out more.
6:41 PM: Just arriving at the crash scene. Does indeed appear to be a close call. Police are still here. General traffic alert: Alki Avenue is jammed both ways – looks like a summer night down here.
6:45 PM: Police tell us the driver apparently had a medical problem that sent the car off the road. No one was seriously hurt otherwise. SFD is gone and the remaining SPD cars are not in the traffic lane, so the jam down here is not related.
8:23 AM: Big emergency response for a boat reported to be in trouble off the 10400 block of Maplewood Place SW [map], which is in southwesternmost West Seattle.
8:28 AM: From the scanner, 50-foot boat, “foot of water in the bilge,” three people on board, no injuries, “the boat is secured but not to shore yet.”
8:43 AM: Our crew has arrived. It’s a fishing boat, and this is all taking place on private shoreline. The Coast Guard is helping Seattle Fire.

(ADDED: Photo texted by Kathleen)
8:50 AM: More information from SFD – the boat lost power, ran aground, and sprang a leak. Two of the three people on board were taken to an SFD boat by a small USCG craft, while the third worked to fix the problem and get the boat under way again.
9:04 AM: Added photos. The incident commander tells us the boat will head back toward the Duwamish River, and that a fireboat is following just in case there’s any more trouble.
7:35 PM: Thanks for the tips and photos – neighbors near 39th and Raymond [map] report a semi-truck took out a fire hydrant, sending water into the street, and reducing water pressure in nearby homes.

Seattle Fire Department is there. No report of injuries – the call is classified as “investigate, out of service.”
7:42 PM: Another texter just sent word of brown water at a home nearby. Having just toured the city drinking-water control center today (story tomorrow) – we can confirm the hydrant problem would definitely cause something like that, though we would still advise making sure Seattle Public Utilities knows – 206-386-1800.
9:36 PM: Commenters in the affected area say SPU’s telling them water could be out until about 4 am.

(ADDED: WSB photo)
7:27 PM: If you are hearing the sirens – a sizable emergency response is en route to a crash at 15th and Henderson.
7:41 PM: Eastbound Henderson is blocked at 16th. An ambulance has been summoned for one person.
8:07 PM: Two vehicles collided; they have since cleared to the side, SFD has left the scene, and a passenger from one vehicle has been taken to the hospital. The road was reopening after some debris cleanup.

11:25 AM: We’re getting word of a police/fire response at Don Armeni Boat Ramp, and one tipster says it’s affecting traffic on Harbor Avenue SW. It reportedly involves a person in crisis in the area. Avoid the area for now. We’ll update when we find out more.
11:38 AM: Police tell us the first call on this came in about an hour ago. They have crisis-trained officers on scene and “are doing everything they can to resolve it peacefully.” Harbor is blocked near Seacrest on the east side.
11:41 AM: Per scanner, the situation is now under control and police are reopening Harbor and the boat ramp shortly. The person had been reported to be threatening suicide and police had been told the person was believed to have been armed. (Reminder, as we always note when we mention situations involving self-harm or threats of it, the Crisis Clinic‘s 24-hour hotline is 206-461-3222.)
11:50 AM: Now that this is being resolved, we’re adding photos sent to us (thank you) showing the response:
11:56 AM: Our crew arriving in the area says Harbor is still blocked at California.
12:01 PM: And NOW it’s reopened. The person in crisis is being taken to a hospital. And police/fire are clearing out of the park.
10:25 PM: Another crash tonight – this time, in Arbor Heights, at 35th and 104th. According to scanner traffic, a driver has hit “several” parked cars and a fence. We’re off to check it out.
10:36 PM: This appears to have happened on the east (northbound) side of the street; traffic is getting through.
6:47 PM: The crash on the SFD 911 log for 37th and Alaska has traffic diverting from both the eastbound and westbound directions on Alaska, per a texter. If you’re headed out, avoid for now.
7:03 PM: The crash is blocking the westbound side of Alaska but firefighters are directing traffic around it, both ways.
We’re heading next to a crash Russ has been tweeting about, a motorcycle down by Chelan and West Marginal.

— Russ Walker (@russ_walker) March 19, 2016
Avoid that area too.
7:16 PM: SFD was clearing from the corner east of Chelan Cafe; medic unit headed out toward the eastbound low bridge. No info on injuries but no evidence of setup for the level of investigation that life-threatening injuries would require.
7:31 PM: Just went back through both areas. Chelan scene was totally clear, no fire, no police. The motorcycle is still on a patch of greenery by the sidewalk. On Alaska, SFD, SPD, and two crashed cars are still there.
4:17 PM: Thanks to the neighbors who texted about this: Seattle Fire is in the 8100 block of 15th SW (map), blocked off while a possible natural-gas leak is under investigation. One neighbor tells us they’ve been evacuated from their house and the street’s been blocked off. We’re en route to see if we can find out more.
4:32 PM: Puget Sound Energy (which is our area’s natural-gas utility) is on scene now to find out what happened and to shut off the gas; as our photo shows, they’re digging next to a hydrant. No injuries or damage. The street closure is just covering part of the block where this is happening, south of Elmgrove. It’s a residential street so no businesses are affected.
6:16 PM: Neighbors say they were allowed back in their homes by 5 pm; SFD has closed out the call.

9:26 PM: What started as a heavy-rescue call and became a hazmat call is blocking 1st Ave. S. south of SW Kenyon [map]. It’s a tanker truck that went sideways but police tell us nothing spilled and no one was hurt. A tow truck has been summoned.
9:55 PM: Added a photo showing the truck on its side right by the gas station that’s there by the freeway ramp.
5:30 PM: Thanks for the tips – we’ve just checked out the incident that has eastbound Barton blocked across from central Westwood Village, west of 26th SW. Emergency responders tell us a female pedestrian was hit while crossing there. She’s being taken to the hospital by private ambulance, indicating her injuries are not life-threatening.
5:44 PM: Our crew tells us police and fire have all cleared the scene and the road is open again. Community advocates have long lobbied for safety improvements there, and SDOT indicated at a recent meeting that some are finally in the works.
Thanks for the texts about the emergency response near the Alki Community Center. Here’s what it was about: A woman was injured in Schmitz Park, about midway between the upper and lower entrances to the main trail, apparently from some kind of fall. She had to be brought out via a “Stokes litter” (in photo, post-rescue), the incident commander told us, which took some time; she’s been taken to Harborview.

(ADDED: WSB photo of flipped car. Gas infrastructure is at left)
FIRST REPORT, 12:01 AM: Seattle Fire is sending a “heavy rescue” response to the 900 block of SW Holden, just west of Highland Park Way [map]. It’s described as a rollover crash, with a ruptured natural-gas line, which might mean evacuations of nearby apartments. We’re on our way.

(Photo tweeted by @cmosetick)
12:15 AM: We’ve just arrived a few blocks away in the Highland Park Improvement Club parking lot. The odor is strong in the air even here. According to the scanner, people are being evacuated within a block of the crash; one person was reported to be in the car, injuries apparently not major.
12:25 AM: Residents are being sent west. Our crew has been told that the car hit a meter near Holden/Highland Park Way. As you can imagine, we’re being kept a ways back for safety too.
12:30 AM: It’s an inch-and-three-quarters line, SFD says, and Puget Sound Energy (the gas utility) is reported to be here dealing with it. More SFD units are arriving, with sirens, too. From @bites via Twitter, here’s a Vine with the screeching sound of the ruptured line.
12:50 AM: Three Metro buses are being brought in for evacuees to get shelter. Here’s one, by 12th/Holden:
About 150 people are reported to have been evacuated. PSE has not yet been able to shut off the leak, according to the scanner, and has called for a “pressure team.”
1:34 AM: Lots more PSE people here now. So is SFD’s public-information officer Corey Orvold; we’re asking her if there’s an estimate of how much longer it might take before people can go back in. The rolled car is still in the bushes near Holden/HP Way; the driver, described only as “male,” is at Harborview. Police are still trying to sort out the circumstances.
1:52 AM: Per scanner, “PSE has got the gas shut down.”
2:01 AM: Most of the SFD units have been dismissed. They’re reopening Highland Park Way but keeping westbound Holden closed for now. We finally have a photo of the flipped car to add atop the story. Checking on the evacuation status.
2:13 AM: SFD has tweeted that evacuees have been allowed home.
2:29 AM: SFD’s Orvold confirms everyone’s been allowed back inside. A tow truck is here and they’re strategizing how to get the car out.
6:50 AM: Per Tweets by Beat, this is classified as a DUI investigation.
7:19 PM: If you’re seeing police, a helicopter, and/or traffic east of Roxbury, we’re checking out reports of a search for a hit-run driver after a crash in the 3rd/Olson vicinity (map).
7:37 PM: We’re at Arrowhead Gardens (2nd and Olson), where police have reportedly found one suspect. Another is still being sought. Guardian One is circling overhead; the crash scene is along Olson on the north side of the complex, and tow trucks are on scene – traffic is still getting through both ways, but slowly.
Seattle Fire Engine 11 is there and via scanner we’ve just heard them call for SDOT to come out to clean up “a significant amount of oil on the road.” We don’t have details of the crash yet but did see a private ambulance leaving as we arrived.
7:45 PM: Police tell us that two vehicles were involved – the hit-run suspects, who got out and ran (and are reported to have left a gun in the vehicle), were in a dark SUV; they hit a white car. We’ll be adding photos in a bit when back at HQ. Police confirm the suspect they have in custody is male and they are still seeking a female; no further description. They also confirm one person, from the car that was hit, was taken to the hospital by private ambulance. The Guardian One chopper is still circling over Arrowhead Gardens.
7:17 PM: No, it’s not a fire that brought several SFD units to the 2600 block of 42nd SW, across from Safeway. We just talked with firefighters at the scene. A water-pipe break on the top floor of an apartment building sent water down through the building; firefighters are helping with cleanup. No fire, no injuries.
7:36 PM: In the few minutes since we left, the call has closed on the SFD 911 log, which means the units have all departed.

8 PM: Police and fire converged on the 2400 block of SW Holden a short time ago, not far from the Southwest Precinct, where we’ve been covering the West Seattle Block Watch Captains Network meeting and heard the sirens. What we’ve found out so far is that one woman has gone to the hospital after falling from an apartment window. Whether it was an accident or deliberate, police are trying to sort out.
8:56 PM P.S. We’re not likely to be able to find out more about this until morning, because of this incident which was unfolding in South Seattle at the same time.
(SCROLL DOWN for newest information)
10:52 AM: A big Seattle Fire response is headed to a “trench rescue” call in the 3000 block of 36th SW (map). More to come.

(Added 1:08 pm, WSB photos by Christopher Boffoli, unless otherwise credited)
10:56 AM: From the scanner – first crews on scene say this is a person “buried up to his head” in an 8-foot deep, 3-foot wide hole. They’re working to dig him out. We won’t know until our crew arrives if it is related, but city files show a side-sewer repair permit for the address listed on the 911 log.

(WSB photo by Patrick Sand)
11:09 AM: If you’re in the area, you’ll see specialized SFD vehicles heading that way – technical rescue equipment. (The heavy-rescue vehicle, shown above, is already on scene.) We’re awaiting an update from our crew.
11:16 AM: They’ve confirmed this happened during sewer-repair work. SFD’s public-information officer is on scene and gathering information from the SFD crews, more of which are still arriving. There’s also at least one TV helicopter in the area.
11:21 AM: Just announced via radio communications – “this is now a recovery operation, not a rescue operation.”
11:52 AM: Also just announced – state Labor and Industries, which investigates workplace incidents, is on the way. Seattle Police will investigate the incident for starters, according to SFD, whose spokesperson Corey Orvold has just briefed us and other media at the scene (update: here’s the video):
They say the soil was too dense for them to get to the victim in time – there was no real way to make a path for air.
They’re still using vacuum equipment to try to clear it. 36th SW remains closed between Hanford and Stevens and likely will be for a while.
2:21 PM: Some crews remain at the scene. We’ll be checking back there within the hour. No additional investigation information so far. A few lines above, we’ve added the video of the early briefing SFD gave media at the scene.
4:25 PM: Only TV crews left at the scene. Meantime, we just talked with Elaine Fischer at Labor and Industries. She says this was the first trenching fatality in our state since 2008. And she confirms what our search of online records indicated – there was no history of safety investigations for the company doing the work, Alki Construction LLC of Burien. L&I doesn’t have any information about the person who was killed – that would come from the Medical Examiner, likely no sooner than tomorrow. No additional information from SPD, who SFD had indicated would be doing some investigation too.
ADDED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON: The King County Medical Examiner has identified the victim as 36-year-old Harold Felton. We have a message out to L&I to find out if there’s anything new in the investigation.

1:23 AM: Big response for a crash at 8th SW and SW Roxbury, reported to involve two vehicles, one on its side. The initial “heavy rescue” response has been scaled back because everyone’s reported to be safely out.

1:47 AM: The crash is actually on 8th north of Roxbury; 8th is blocked both ways until it’s cleared. Both vehicles are on the east (northbound) side of the street. No serious injuries – no medic unit or ambulance summoned so far.
2:02 AM: Added photos.

11:23 PM: A crash is blocking Beach Drive both ways in the 5300 block (map)- and as you know if you’ve driven it, the stretch south of Jacobsen has few outlets. No other details about the crash so far.
11:56 PM: Thanks to Christine for the photo, added above. She says two cars were involved, one apparently speeding, and that one person was taken from the scene by ambulance.
12:08 AM: Scanner traffic indicates Beach Driver either has reopened or will shortly.

(WSB photo)
Police are still on both sides of Delridge at Willow as they investigate the crash that sent a driver to the hospital and left his classic Cadillac up on the sidewalk. He was transported by private ambulance, so his injuries aren’t life-threatening. No tow truck on scene yet but traffic is getting through, except for pedestrians on the east side of Delridge. (Thanks to the person who texted about this – our hotline is 206-293-6302, text or voice, any time.)
4:19 PM: If you’re headed to or from Morgan Junction, the California/Fauntleroy intersection has trouble in just about every direction because of a crash. No word yet on injuries. More to come.

4:27 PM UPDATE: We’ve added a photo of one of the two cars involved – it’s still facing the wrong way in the northbound lanes and police tell us a tow truck might still be half an hour away. The other car is north of the bus stop. Vehicles are getting through in part by using the center lane.
12:49 PM: Thanks for the tips – a natural-gas leak in The Triangle is reported to have led to the evacuation of the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) – early word is that it’s not believed to be at the Y itself, but Seattle Fire is at the scene and making sure everybody’s safe. We’re en route and will have an update.

12:58 PM: Fire and police vehicles are blocking eastbound Avalon just west of 35th, so avoid the area.
1:11 PM: Seattle Fire is leaving. They tell us they’ve done some safety checks, and Puget Sound Energy is on the scene, and it’s been determined it’s safe for those evacuated to go back in. Per comments, Alki Lumber was among those evacuated, and firefighters tell us the Luna construction site was too – we saw hard-hat workers standing on the north side of Avalon. Josh Sutton from the Y says it’s reopening at 1:30 pm.

If you’ve noticed the police, fire, and ambulance activity on SW Alaska west of California – police are looking for a suspect in an assault reported on a Metro bus. The victim has been taken to the hospital. No other details yet.
