Before the snow, we were thinking of featuring several star displays last night, for Christmas Eve. Maybe next year! But this star comes with its own story – the anonymous reader who sent the photo explains that “(an) arborist installed a hand-built, homemade, lit star on wood frame, high in a birch tree.” Other stars to see around West Seattle include the ones at Providence Mount St. Vincent (35th/Edmunds) and Nucor (Avalon/Andover). Thanks to WSB reader photos, we’ve been able to show you many views of this first West Seattle “white Christmas” in nine years – but none like these! Trileigh Tucker photographed these jewel-like closeup views of snowflakes last night.
That snowflake was caught on a strand of spider web.
Beautiful – but when not glimmering on the shrubbery, it’s potentially treacherous, since night is falling, with a forecast low below freezing, so what’s left on the roads and sidewalks is likely to turn to ice. Hope you can stay home, cozy, safe, and warm.

Before we move on to Christmas Day coverage – you might be wondering how much snow fell, and whether we’ll see more. The National Weather Service says the official Christmas Eve total measured at Sea-Tac was 1.6 inches.

That would place this at #3 on the NWS’s list of recorded Christmas Eve snowfalls:

The NWS says we could see up to one more inch of snow this morning – the Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 am. After that? Here’s the forecast: Rain and snow showers possible this afternoon; then a cold, cloudy night; and Tuesday has another chance of snow showers before (relatively) warmer rain returns later in the week.

We were involved in a car accident and this kind man gave us hand warmers and a warm blanket for our baby. We would love to send this man dinner to thank him for what he did for our family.
We were coming down SW Barton St and about 23rd and there were two cars in the middle of the road. In order to avoid hitting them, and we were sliding down the street we hit a pole. Baby was in the car and we are all okay. But I am hoping to thank the kind neighbor who gave us hand warmers and gave our baby a big red blanket to keep him warm. Everything was so crazy so we didn’t get a chance to thank him and I would love to bring him dinner or something. I know I probably won’t find him but it’s worth a shot.
He was wearing a light-up Seahawks Santa hat, a Seahawks jersey and had a beard. I’m assuming he lives near Barton and 23rd. if anyone hears about someone helping a family in a crash, please let me know!
10:09 PM: Seattle Fire is sending a “heavy rescue” response to 30th SW/SW Genesee [map], which would be on the hill along the north side of West Seattle Golf Course. It’s reported to be a two-car crash, with one vehicle gone sideways.
10:15 PM: Everyone is reported to be out of the vehicles – no “heavy rescue” extrication required. Per scanner, westbound traffic on Genesee will be blocked off at 26th.

2:58 PM: It’s light – but it’s snow. Thanks for the texts – we’ve heard from High Point, and we’re seeing light snow here on the Fauntleroy/Gatewood line, too.
3:06 PM: We’re hearing from points north, too, including The Junction. And even before the snow arrived, SDOT had sent a media advisory saying it “has increased crews for night shift deployment, and will continue to monitor, evaluate and treat Seattle roads this evening accordingly.”
3:28 PM: It’s sticking – on cars, rooftops, roadsides.
3:48 PM: But as that photo shows, the roads up here (about 340′ – check your elevation on this map) are still bare and wet. The National Weather Service‘s updated forecast predicts about 1″ of snow.

5:57 PM: Road report from WSB’s Christopher Boffoli:
I just drove back to the peninsula from Capitol Hill and I thought I’d give you a quick street report. I-5 appears to have been salted and is just wet. Traffic was light. No issues there (including on and off ramps which were fine. In my short ten minute drive I did see state plows on the freeway (though with plows up as they weren’t needed). The West Seattle bridge was mostly wet with a bit of frosty slush building up around the Delridge exit.
City streets are a different story. Most of the city streets have a light coating of snow and are pretty slick. I have an all wheel drive car – which is very sure-footed – but I definitely stepped on the brakes hard once or twice to test it and I was able to break the tires free and slide very easily. I also saw a car on Hanford, on the hill just east of California, sideways with hazards on. I didn’t see any SDOT salters or sanders at all. So I’d recommend that people exercise caution, slow down, and leave themselves plenty of distance between other cars and avoid the steeper hills if you can at this point.
We mentioned a 30th/Brandon crash earlier; we’ve since heard police (via scanner) mention closure signs on that hill, which goes between Delridge and High Point [map].
6:57 PM: Metro just sent an alert that its South Seattle area – which includes West Seattle – is on snow routes. (Find yours here.)
7:45 PM: Sue texted to say that Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Gatewood has canceled its 9 pm candlelight service because of the weather. (Anyone else with changes/cancellations? Let us know so we can add.) Meantime, Vika tweeted this West Seattle snowman photo:
8:11 PM: Light snow is still falling, and we’d gauge it at about an inch deep here on the Fauntleroy/Gatewood line.
9:44 PM: Hills continue to be the trouble spots on roads. A texter sent photos of cars that got into trouble on – and off – the SW Spokane hill by 48th earlier this evening:

In case you’ve heard the sirens and/or seen the emergency vehicles headed to Terminal 5 – a man is reported to have been injured in a fall on board “the blue vessel” that’s been docked there a while. So far, as described in radio transmissions, his injuries are not reported to be major.
You’ve been hearing talk of possible Christmas Eve/Day snow for days – and now the National Weather Service has issued an alert saying it’s looking quite likely. From the “Winter Weather Advisory” alert, which will be in effect 7 pm tonight through noon tomorrow:
… Snow expected. Plan on road conditions becoming slippery tonight. Total snow accumulations of up to 3 inches expected with the higher amounts in locations around 500 feet and above with less than an inch near the water. …
The highest elevation within city limits – near the 35th/Myrtle reservoir – is just over 500 feet. Meantime, let us know if/when you see snow – 206-293-6302 text or voice – thanks!
A 41-year-old man is being taken to Harborview Medical Center with burns to his face and hands after what was described on Seattle Fire radio as a propane explosion in an RV. Several SFD units were dispatched to 1st Avenue South and SW Kenyon [map] to fight the resulting fire and treat the patient. The fire is under investigation.
If you went to Camp Second Chance‘s community party on Saturday afternoon (one of the events on our daily-highlights list), and had a slice of pie – here’s who to thank: The South Park Senior Center. Diane Radischat, a member of the center’s board of directors, shared the photo and explained:
South Park Senior Center donated and delivered 36 pies for (the camp’s) holiday party today, enough pie for 300 people. We wanted to give back to a community we knew was deserving of a treat at this special time of the year.
Diane is second from right in the photo, with, from left, a camp resident, SPSC executive director Patricia Barker, and, also from the center’s board, Sharon Schaffer. CSC is the city-sanctioned encampment on Myers Way, home to more than 45 people as of the report given to its community advisory committee earlier this month.
8:15 PM: Police are checking out multiple reports of possible gunfire in the past 20 minutes or so. A texter in North Delridge heard it; we’ve also heard dispatchers mention callers from the Belvidere, Genesee, and Highland Park areas. No word of anyone having been shot, nor have we heard anything yet about police finding evidence of gunfire (either casings or property damage).
10:19 PM: No gunfire confirmation on the log so far, and commenter Mykscott reports seeing/hearing fireworks in one of the areas from which 911 calls were received.

Family and friends will gather next month to celebrate the life of Roberta C. “Bobbie” Healy. Here’s the remembrance being shared with her community:
Roberta (Bobbie) Carol Healy of Seattle passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Swedish Hospital, Edmonds, with her family by her side. She was born July 17, 1940, in Grants Pass, Oregon. She was the youngest daughter of Gordon and Cora Carline.
Bobbie lived her childhood years in Ellensburg until her family moved to Bellevue, where she graduated from Bellevue High School in 1958. She married Duane Healy in 1960 and soon welcomed their two sons Patrick and Michael. Duane’s work took them to California for a few years; then they returned to Washington State and later settled in their West Seattle home. The family enjoyed camping in their travel trailer and frequent trips to the ocean in the boys’ younger years.
Her favorite outings throughout her childhood years were those spent with her parents and Sister Jackie at Mutiny Bay Resort on Whidbey Island. The beach, salt air, and camaraderie of the resort were everlasting. During the boy’s school years, they purchased a place in the resort. It became a sanctuary away from the city life, a second home to her boys, and a world of lifelong friends and extended family.
Bobbie was exquisitely creative and had a love for design and craft. Over the years she enjoyed candle making, ceramics, driftwood collage, dried flower arranging, sewing, and scrapbooking, to name a few. If something was new and trending, you could bet that she was already making it! She especially loved doing projects with her boys and nieces, and loved making gifts for family and friends. The digital age opened up a completely new avenue and prompted her passion for document design and desktop publishing.
Bobbie’s career in the towing industry spanned decades. As a dispatcher for many of Seattle’s major towing companies, she was highly recognized as the best dispatcher in the city throughout her career. Her wit and charm reached thousands over the radio waves, and although some had never met her face to face, they knew her well. After leaving the towing industry, she went to work as the friendly operator at Honda of Seattle.
Bobbie was a dedicated member of the Business and Professional Women /WA, which she joined in 1988. Throughout her membership, she served in many capacities including Totem BPW President, BPW/WA State Corresponding Secretary (1993-94), and was instrumental in obtaining appointments with State Senators and Legislators for the BPW/USA Lobby Days in Washington D.C. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Washington State Business & Professional Woman’s Foundation for over 10 years. Additionally she served on many minutes approval committees, worked on the State Roster, and developed many newsletters, publications, flyers and programs for the organization. She was also involved (estimated time: 1990s to 2015) in the National Association of Parliamentarians, Washington State Association of Parliamentarians and the Point of Order Parliamentary Law Unit. She was instrumental in providing support for the 2005 National Convention held in Seattle, providing endless hours working on publications, signage, and materials for the 450+ convention attendees. While not a member of the National Ataxia Foundation, she did lend her expertise in support of the 2009 National Convention held in Seattle.
Bobbie cherished gatherings with family and friends and surrounding herself with love and laughter. She was a loving mother, sister and aunt. Her pride and joy were her sons and nieces, and she never passed a chance to hold a new baby in her arms.
She had a contagious laugh, quick wit, and a great sense of humor. Bobbie never met a stranger! Bobbie loved collecting old world Santas and displaying them at her favorite time of the year. She was a caring, compassionate person who touched many lives. Remember her laugh, her touch, her smile. Her love for family and friends will never be forgotten.
Bobbie is survived by her son Michael Healy; step sister Sandy Poolman; nieces Nancy (David) Brooks; Julie Griffin and Becky (Bob) Eilert, and their dad, Roger Griffin; her “Great nieces and nephews” R.J. Brooks (Kryss); Madison Brooks, Erin Grifka; Camis Eilert-Davis (Bill) and Todd Eilert; and “Great-great nephews and neice” Carter and Rylen Brooks; Hudson, Beckham, and Sailor Davis; her Griffin Family and giant circle of friends.
Predeceased by her parents, Duane Healy, Sister Jackie Griffin, and son Patrick Healy.

Thanks to Highland Park Action Committee co-chair Michele Witzki for the tip: SDOT crews have been out today finishing the installation of pedestrian-activated flashing-beacon signs for crosswalks on 16th SW – the one in our photo, at 16th/Trenton, as well as 16th/Thistle, 16th/Kenyon, and 16th/Webster. Along with the recently installed speed humps on Trenton, these are related to the Highland Park Greenway project, as detailed on this SDOT mailer, which includes a map of the project zone.
P.S. The beacons aren’t active yet – we learned while reporting on an unrelated project elsewhere in West Seattle recently that it takes a separate crew, with electrical specialists, to do that part of the work.
3:01 PM: It’s the day before Christmas Eve and package deliverers are busier than Rudolph and friends. In some cases, the wrong package is going to the wrong person. This happened to Summer – who got a package from UPS, addressed to her residence, but in the name of Tiarra H. If that’s you – or if you know Tiarra – let us know so we can connect you. Otherwise, Summer will be taking the package to the UPS Store in the morning, which so far is the only option she’s come up with for getting it to the correct person.
5:24 PM: Found.
10:54 AM: The video is from Heather, one of several people who have messaged us this morning with word of brown water in the West Seattle Junction area. As noted here before, it’s important to report brown water to Seattle Public Utilities at 206-386-1800 – Heather’s family did and reports that SPU says it’s because of fire-hydrant testing in the area. Here’s the general SPU advice about what to do if your water is discolored; you might recall SPU’s West Seattle flushing operations last year, an effort to get rust out of the pipes before it’s stirred up by hydrant use or pipe breaks.
12:28 PM: Despite the initial report blaming hydrant testing, it now seems there’s a water break – both Eddie via e-mail (including the photo below) and TTT via comments are reporting it.
We have a call out to SPU.
1:14 PM: Just talked to SPU’s Andy Ryan. He says they’re still working to figure out exactly where the break is – so far they think it’s possibly an 8-inch water line, and they’ve “throttled” water in the area so that what’s coming up at 48th/Alaska should be down to a trickle. In addition to the people reporting discolored water, he says six customers in the area are without service right now.

Just a friendly reminder, since Christmas is on the other side of the weekend: The Christmas People are offering a sit-down dinner Monday to anyone who is in need, doesn’t want to be alone, etc., noon-4 pm. As part of that effort and their distribution of 1,600 meals to people without homes, they are welcoming donations of home-baked cookies – more than 3,000 needed! So if you can do a little baking, a dozen, a hundred, whatever (not store-bought), your donation would be more than welcome, and you can drop cookies off at the Alki Masonic Hall in The Junction (4736 40th SW) 9 am-1 pm tomorrow, Sunday, or Monday. (That’s also where the Christmas dinner will be served.)
