West Seattle, Washington
21 Wednesday
Again this week, the Seahawks game vs. the 49ers was preceded by a military flyover, visible from West Seattle. Thanks to everyone who sent photos; the ones above and below are from Steven Rice, with a closeup look at the U.S. Air Force C-17 cargo jet.
To be specific, someone posting forLumen Field describes it as a “C-17 Globemaster III from 446th Operations Group, Joint Base Lewis McChord,” which as you probably know is south of Tacoma.
First order of business for a special trio of tourists who are visiting The Junction today – photo! They’re from Scandinavia – with the phone above is Frederikke from Denmark, with Sofia from Sweden at left and Maria from Denmark at right. Smiling in the background is Bethany from the Port of Seattle, shepherding them around the city – they’ve already been to Ballard, Capitol Hill, Georgetown, and Chinatown-ID. The Scandinavians are content creators so they’re working with the Port to promote Seattle tourism. This morning, they took the Water Taxi from downtown and are now in The Junction, starting with a sound bath at Inner Alchemy (whose proprietor Maari Falsetto is second from right below):
The visitors focus on food, wine, and wellness; their next scheduled stops include Husky Deli and Easy Street Records, and another of their hosts, Stacie from the Junction Association, greeted them at the Water Taxi dock with treats from another iconic Junction business, Bakery Nouveau.
Since this morning, we’ve heard from more than a few people who had found what one described as a “weird flyer” on their cars along streets west of The Junction, with this heading:
It’s accompanied by grainy black-and-white images that appear to cross-reference as photos of men many have seen, local rock ‘n’ roll superstar Eddie Vedder and country great Waylon Jennings. The rest of the flyer has nothing to do with them – sketches and text about a 2001 triple-murder case in Florence, Montana, and suggests the case is unsolved.
However, comprehensive searching (not AI) suggests it’s more like unresolved.
Two men were arrested and charged; according to this 2021 report, the charges eventually were dropped because prosecutors didn’t have enough evidence to go on, though the men both went to prison on other charges.
There is no indication online of an official search for someone, though sketches on the flyer trace back to a site purporting to be a true-crime podcast.
Even weirder, the QR codes go to a page with a research abstract dating back about a year suggesting the death of another Seattle rock superstar was homicide, titled “A Multidisciplinary Analysis of the Kurt Cobain Death.” (Here’s what Snopes.com made of that study.)
So who distributed the flyers and why? No hint of that yet. But it seems to have been widespread enough that someone likely has it on security video.
We’re not showing the photo because the check has names, but Iris reports finding this near 37th/Edmunds:
While out in my neighborhood I came across some trash but upon further inspection it looks to be a paycheck and stub from [a West Seattle restaurant]. The name on it is [initials WG]. Maybe with the blog’s help it can be reunited.
If yours, contact us and we’ll connect you.
Recognize any of this? WSR found it:
Hoping to connect these items with owner. Jacket & pack on parking strip. Looks like pack has been emptied. East side of 42 Ave SW between Brandon & Dawson.
If you recognize any or all of that, contact us and we’ll connect you.
1:26 PM: Two just went over us while we were out walking in The Junction. Seahawks pregame flyover – it’s kickoff time right now.
3:50 PM: West Seattle photographer Steven Rice says they were “Navy Lancers EA-18G Growlers” and sends these photos he took at the Museum of Flight (Boeing Field):
They’re based on Whidbey Island.
The photo and report were sent by Z:
Potentially stolen … 8 boxes of n95 masks at Charlestown and California. 6 boxes stacked unopened on Charlestown near Shug’s. Looks like 2 boxes brought across the street outside of 7-11, one open and empty, the other opened during the day (potentially by passersby). They have been there since at least 9 am.
First – a spectacular sunset! Thanks to everyone who sent photos – here are a few:
Above, from Greg C; below, from Brooke Gosztola:
And from Bert Huelmann:
On the other side of the clock, this morning’s full moonset was photographed by Dawn Roeder:
Sunday’s moonset is at 8:22 am; the sunset will be at 6:56 pm.
Thanks to Margaret for the photo and report. She snapped the pic of a Tesla Cybercab on the Admiral Way Bridge today, first spotting it on the West Seattle Bridge and following it onto the peninsula, turning away as it continued to head westbound toward Alki. Though the Cybercabs are described by Tesla as part of its Robotaxi fleet, they aren’t likely to be operating autonomously here any time soon, as it’s not yet allowed, and city policies remain under development (though test runs with human “safety drivers” on board are allowed). Cybercabs are only in operation currently in Austin, Texas.
Josh wonders if somebody out there is looking for the scooter he found:
Just want to see if we can help reunite someone with their scooter.
It’s an adult “fun” scooter, not for medical or accessibility. It was abandoned last Saturday (Aug 22nd), early in the morning. The front wheel is severely damaged and the tire is flat. There were a lot of parts and accessories scattered all over the road. Seems like a joyride gone wrong.
I filed a police report with SPD and they “concluded” their investigation.
I don’t want to give too much detail, as it seems to be expensive and it looks like the person who had it put a lot of consideration into what they put on it.
It’s a motorized, electric scooter. Large, heavy duty and just heavy (took a handcart to move it). There’s a sticker on the body.
If this might be yours, email westseattleblog@gmail.com and we’ll connect you.
Thanks to those who sent photos this week of the Lincoln Park “Love Rock” with a tribute to Dolly Parton. We haven’t had much time till now to truly contemplate the magnitude of the loss created by the musician/philanthropist’s departure from this plane of existence; we were in a coffee-shop meeting with three other people on Tuesday when something one person said led two of us to pick up our phones to look something up – and there was the sad news. Ms. Parton is reported to have had a simple burial ceremony yesterday.
One more event, not on our daily highlight list because we just happened onto it: The Eazy Duz It Car Club‘s annual family gathering is happening at Alki right now, and you can admire many members’ low-rider cars parked along Alki Avenue west of the Bathhouse.
Eazy Duz It is active around the area, including a summer car show in White Center, and partnerships with local students.
Some of the cars are artistically decorated as well as sporting bright paint and gleaming chrome.
It’s not an official car show but we saw many admirers milling around.
Earlier this month, we reported on the volunteer work that beautified the southeast corner of 44th and Alaska in The Junction. Today, we got the photo above from Chris Mackay of the West Seattle Junction Association, after a surprise addition to the corner – the Stars and Stripes for its century-old flagpole. “Look what a do-gooder did!” Chris said. “I have no idea who put it up, but I like it!”
Seattle’s biggest tribute to the Seahawks and their fans – visible across Elliott Bay, on the JPMorganChase Center downtown – is not simply because the preseason is about to kick off, but also, our tipster tells us, for the HBO series “Hard Knocks,” which has been chronicling the NFL champions’ training camp.

That photo is from one of multiple readers who have messaged us to report a sighting of ICE officers at Alki Beach this afternoon. The sender, who also sent this video, said the officers, in unmarked vehicles, converged on that vendor stand along the sidewalk, then left apparently without detaining anyone.
The photos and report are from Alyson:
ound dumped back pack, work bag, serious lunch box
Found on parking strip in front of 3436 61st SW. Looks like it was stolen and all rifled through. Many items broken open but the nice bags, lunch box, and thermos are intact. Well worth picking up if it belongs to you.
Reminder: When items seem more truly lost/found than stolen/dumped, you can look for/post them in our Community Forums‘ Lost/Found/Non-Pets section.
A stretch of Harbor Avenue is lined with “no parking” signs right now because of what you might consider the Seafair Torchlight Parade floats’ side trip – some of the visiting floats park on port property (Jack Block Park/Terminal 5) before and after tonight’s parade, and need the full width of the street when they convoy in and out. (The parade is on Alaskan Way along the downtown waterfront for the second year, and starts on the (corrected) north end at 7:30 pm, heading south. We checked with Metro earlier this week for those taking the Water Taxi to the parade; it’s following its regular Saturday night schedule.)
So reports Samantha, who sent the photo after seeing this and spotting the couple nearby: “They looked so happy.” No backstory, but – congratulations!
Thanks to everyone who’s sent photos and/or reports of that huge cloud visible looking toward the Cascades. Even before researching, we guessed it had to do with the wildfires, and that’s what Kevin Freitas, who sent the photo above, says: “Pyrocumulus cloud from the Little Giant Fire.”
(added) The photo above this line was sent from Tasha, aboard the Water Taxi.
The report and photo were sent by Kelly:
Came home from work to this probably stolen and ransacked abandoned van in front of my house. Location is 18th and Elmgrove.
It’s been reported to police but is still there as of moments ago.
5:37 PM: No visual yet (aside from X clips like this) nor full ID, but for those who thought the World Cup flyover jets might have been the Blue Angels – same type of jets, F/A-18 Super Hornets. We saw them over West Seattle twice, after they took off from Boeing Field, and when they headed back for the actual flyover just before 5 pm.
6:56 PM: Thanks to Steven Rice for the photos, above and below!
Before the holiday weekend is entirely in the rear-view mirror – new views of what we’ve already shown briefly:
FRIDAY AURORA: Kevin Freitas just sent that time-lapse video of the Northern Lights seen, faintly, from West Seattle on Friday night (featured here that night thanks to a reader tip/photo).
The next night …
SATURDAY FIREWORKS: On Sunday morning, we featured a photo by David Hutchinson of the Lake Union fireworks as seen from West Seattle. Since then, Bob Spears has sent several pics – above and below:
Thanks again to everyone who shares photos and video with us so we can share with tens of thousands of your neighbors! (Email westseattleblog@gmail.com or text 206-293-6302 any time.)
We hadn’t heard of The Big Banana Car until Max sent us that photo from an encounter at Don Armeni Boat Ramp today. But it of course has its own website and social-media feeds. We don’t know who the guy on the left is, but the bearded guy in the car is clearly the car’s creator Steve Braithwaite. He’s been based in Michigan but according to this post from two months ago, he’s becoming a “full-time nomadic banana-car driver.”
