(this post covered updates till 12:33 am Sunday; the next post is here)
(video from California/Thistle [map], added 8:50 pm)
At least here on one of the “higher hills,” as the forecast always refers to it. We have at least two Twitter reports of Alki/Beach Drive snow, too, so it seems to be West Seattle-wide. Adding photographic evidence shortly. “Teensy little flakes,” reports the snow-country-born half of the team, “must be REALLY cold up there (in the clouds).” Forecast has warned of the possibility of snow “showers” so we’ll see how long this lasts. 8:46 PM UPDATE: Getting heavier. And drivers on our hill are starting to sound, shall we say, challenged. Send pix if you have ’em! editor@westseattleblog.com
CLICK TO SEE THE REST OF OUR SATURDAY NIGHT SNOW UPDATES, WHICH CONTINUED TILL WE STARTED A NEW POST AFTER MIDNIGHT:
9 PM UPDATE: Still waiting for the next National Weather Service forecast update; midafternoon update did say:
SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY. LOCAL ACCUMULATIONS OF AN INCH OR TWO POSSIBLE. LOWS IN THE MID 20S. NORTH WIND 15 TO 25 MPH DECREASING TO NORTHEAST 10 TO 15 MPH AFTER MIDNIGHT.
9:30 PM UPDATE: Ron is on the steep slope of Morgan between 35th and Fauntleroy and reports a Metro bus pulling over to be sure it doesn’t get stuck. Which reminds us, the Seattle citywide snow and ice route map we linked to the other day is available from this SDOT webpage. Jenny just sent this photo from Genesee Hill (thank you!), where she describes the snow as coming down “softly and gently”:
9:40 PM: Adding updated video from our neighborhood:
10:07 PM UPDATE: Took a brief break to check TV news. Looks like Everett northward is major trouble – the only in-city crew we saw was on Queen Anne, looked like here. No report of big problems in the metro area at this point. Needless to say, don’t drive if you don’t have to. Thanks to Celeste at 40th/Genesee (map) for this pic:
Monitoring the Twitter stream of snow talk, Pam from Nerd’s Eye View, who lives in Gatewood, pronounces her vicinity “flocked.” Exactly how our bigger shrubbery looks. 10:18 PM UPDATE: Remember we have various traffic cameras, with quasi-live screengrabs, on the WSB Traffic page – right now the roads look wet, but that could also be ice, yikes. You can see all city-run cameras from this SDOT page. Getting more pix from around West Seattle, too: Via Facebook, Talani at Stor-More Self-Storage (WSB sponsor) in the Luna Park business district sent this pic:
The National Weather Service has published its new forecasts and says this may not really stop before midday tomorrow, so now they have issued a “winter weather advisory” through noon Sunday. 10:34 PM UPDATE: One of the newest comments on this post is from Julie in Arbor Heights, who mentions rare “hexagonal snow crystals.” Coincidentally, we also just got Arbor Heights pix via Facebook, from Tom (thank you) – love this one:
Our street is now white. With the subfreezing air following, this indeed could be setting itself up like the semi-undriveable days of early 2007. We’re lucky that WSB HQ is just feet away from the end of a plowed route, but “plowed” still isn’t exactly bare and dry. Please keep us updated on road conditions in your area, too, especially once morning arrives, so we can share that info for people who have to get around town. 10:47 PM UPDATE: In comments (keep checking those, lots of GREAT reports, thanks to everyone!), “P” reports a snowplow heading north on 35th around Barton (map). 10:57 PM ADDITION: Here’s the latest image (it’ll change whenever you refresh the page) from city traffic cam on Fauntleroy at Alaska, looking northeast:
11:05 PM UPDATE: Quick TV news break – 7 has a reporter downtown, 5’s still on Queen Anne, haven’t seen anyone in West Seattle (hmph, and WE have the highest point in the city!). Via Facebook (if you “friend” us at WS Blog, you should be able to see all the posts people are leaving there), Talani sent another photo from Stor-More on Yancy just east of Avalon – she notes that’s a popular route for folks going to Allstar Fitness, too, so beware:
Just looked back at our Traffic page and realized the Fauntleroy ferry-dock cam view is pretty impressive too:
ADDED 11:21 PM: Now some fun pix. Not West Seattle, but via Twitter, P-I Big Blog reporter Monica Guzman tweeted this link to this photo with her snowpeople. And we got a lovely shot of the Lowman Beach Christmas Ship visit from Linda Ann Cox (thank you!):
Our ORIGINAL plan for tonight was to see the Christmas Ship at Seacrest to get video to post here for a preview of the later stops (and we did just that, in this report), and then to go back for the later Lowman and/or Alki stops just for fun. Snow and subsequent coverage pre-empted that, but we’re not complaining. ADDED 11:35 PM: Thanks to everybody who just sent more photos – first, from Darren in Arbor Heights:
Next, from David at 34th/Findlay (map):
And an update from Jenny on Genesee Hill, who sent a less-snowy version of this view earlier:
Side note, you can watch Seattleites post quick snow notes on Twitter by following these search results. We’re going to throw some shoes on and go out to get some closeup pix of the nearby arterial and environs. P.S. We’re not done with this post yet BUT a pitch if you’re calling it a night any time soon – please send updated pix/info in the morning if you can; we’ll start up a Sunday report once it’s light, to share reports on the roads etc. (even though it’s Sunday, everyone still needs to know if they can get to church, the Farmers’ Market, store, etc.). 12:33 AM UPDATE: Just back in from a walk around our neighborhood. Still snowing lightly but steadily. Looks like maybe 2″ worth up here (400 feet elevation or so); the side roads have about half to three-quarters-inch accumulation. Will add a few pix shortly. Actually, so many pix have just come in that we’re going to add more than a few, in a separate post (heck, it’s Sunday anyway). So, fellow night-owls, stand by. (That new post is here.)
