West Seattle Stadium’s future: Your input needed

westseattlestad.jpg

Just in from the Parks Department via Southwest District Neighborhood Coordinator Stan Lock, an update on the process to seek proposals for renovating and operating West Seattle Stadium. Bottom line, the Parks Department doesn’t have the money to fix up the stadium, so it’s looking for somebody else to do that, in exchange for “a multi-year contract that allows (the operator) to recoup its capital investment and support its own business.” First step: A draft Request for Proposal (RFP) has just been issued, and the department’s looking for feedback before officially circulating it. A public hearing then is planned before the Park Board on Oct. 23; board members are tentatively slated to vote in November, which then would trigger the formal process resulting in a January decision on who will be chosen to run the stadium. Tons of details in this document, including the draft RFP, the timeline, and specifics on what the agreement would entail; we’re still reading it but wanted to get you the link ASAP.

This property at 4432 35th Avenue SW was built in 1938 and has been determined eligible for a City of Seattle landmark nomination. View the site record and the finding of significance at: http://web1.seattle.gov/dpd/historicalsite/QueryResult.aspx?ID=532826599. West Seattle residents need to communicate to City Parks staff that any rehab or adaptive re-use at this property should be sensitive to its historic character. Preferably, City Parks staff would nominate the site as a City landmark before any changes are proposed.

It’s really sad how we in America constantly tear down or otherwise destroy our classic buildings, needlessly, in the vain name of improvement. West Seattle stadium and Memorial stadium, both of which I have used for athletics, are like time machines transporting us to a bygone era. Each time I’m in them I feel surrounded by the souls who have also played and spectated there. These places are part of our history and should be treated with more reverance. I agree with the previous comment’s call for historical classification and appropriate, careful, renovation.

What ever happened to football games being moved from WSS? I thought they wanted it to be a track only venue. I agree, we need to keep this landmark and open space. Its a great place for HS sports.

Sorry, comment time is over.
