FOLLOWUP: Final phase of Alki Point ‘Healthy Street’ work

Thanks for the tips. SDOT has just done work on the south end of the Beach Drive stretch of the Alki Point “Healthy Street.” One reader summarized it this morning:

Yesterday, the protected path in the road along Constellation (Park) was extended to the stop sign (there wasn’t previously a widened path between 64th and 63rd), and some parking there around the corner near the new crosswalk light was also blocked off.

Can I go thru that street if I live there?

    • GreenLakesLover October 22, 2026 (1:50 pm)

Yes of course as can everyone one else who wishes to visit the area. The only difference is that the pedestrian/bike path has been extended all the way to 63rd .

Isn’t that why we have sidewalks? So the people who are walking can walk on them and not be hit by cars. People need to use common sense and not walk out into traffic.

Oh dear, here we go: common sense wisdom from someone who has no knowledge about what they’re talking about.

As a frequent pedestrian on this street, I can tell you the sidewalk can get crowded between walkers, runners, strollers, rollers, cyclists, dogs, etc… we’re giving them a little extra space! It’s nice!

If common sense was common, every driver wouldn’t be on their phone all the time and would drive the speed limit.

That sidewalk is nowhere near wide enough for all the people that walk down there. This is a major improvement. Maybe get out of your car and enjoy the nice walk down there.

Every once in a while, I get tired of endlessly circling the block that I live on and want to cross the street. At that point I am, yes, walking out into traffic.

Having walked and run through it many times, I can tell you that this corner is particularly sketchy because of the limited visibility in both directions since the crossing is right on the bend. Then Beach Drive traffic turning right are often only looking for south bound traffic, and not for crossing pedestrians to their right. One of my least favorite intersections in WS and I’m delighted they have improved it.

how to say “your car isn’t welcome on this street” without outright saying “your car isn’t welcome on this street.”

    • WSB October 22, 2026 (2:15 pm)

Well, people are driving on it anyway. In the very short time I was there to take photos, four drivers turned from WB 63rd to NB Beach

Great news that SDOT finally finished the last block of the street. The entry and exit to the street was particularly sketchy for pedestrians/scooters/bikes/wheelchairs entering and exiting. Thank you!

crosswalk light! finally. that curve is scary to cross.

  • MrWest October 22, 2026 (2:00 pm)

City has ruined that street and its parking.

  • Actualperson October 22, 2026 (2:06 pm)

    Lola. Stop talking common sense.

  • Foop October 22, 2026 (2:09 pm)

love this change. Kind of interesting that the bike arrows direct you to cross beach drive even if you’re going southbound, seems confusing and conflict prone. Maybe we’ll get a protected lane on beach drive soon?

It would be nice if cyclists would use the designated bike path instead of insisting on riding in the street. That goes for Alki Ave and Harbor Ave as well. Why any rider would choose to ride in the street when the city has provided a multi million dollar bike path is beyond me.

    • bikingbruh October 22, 2026 (4:16 pm)

Because the bike path is filled with pedestrians. That’s why I do it.

People need to use the new flashing walk light. I drive thru on 63rd almost daily and half the time someone is walking across without the light. It’s a simple thing to do to be safe, and cars familiar with the intersection will not be expecting people to be crossing if the light is not flashing. A lot of time & money was spent on the installation. Use it!

    • K October 22, 2026 (5:10 pm)

People do not have to use the light. They are in a legal crosswalk, they have the right of way, and drivers should accommodate accordingly.

This street is now safer than ever, we absolutely love riding through Alki Point now!! Thank you City of Seattle!!
