Back on March 26, we brought you first word that the city’s “Summer of Safety” plan would be extended this year, to start May 1 and end September 30. Driving Alki Avenue tonight after covering an unrelated event, we saw illuminated trailer-borne signs for the dates and the 10:30 pm summer closing time:
Our report last month was based on a briefing given to the Parks Board; the city has yet to formally announce this year’s plan, though May 1st is just three weeks away.
1030 pm is too early to close a park during the summer! 1130 pm would be more appropriate.
10:30 pm is perfect. People who live in the area and work everyday need their sleep. The only thing I worry about is how it is going to be enforced…meaning are there enough police officers to keep a close eye on Alki Beach.
I was running by the signs this morning. So the beach closes at 10:30 pm. When does it “open” in the morning? The sign kinda leaves you hanging. :-0
Id like to see some SPD motorcycle officers on Alki during the weekends.
Really? I just got back here after 17 years on the coast of the Great lakes and this draconian cloud is not helping to deal with how expensive it is to literally exist here in the Pacific NW… dystopian culture shock experience-is it really that bad here? I don’t watch TV so I guess im lost on whatever fear pandemic my Puget seems to be infected with?Its less rowdy here than the San Diego beach scene I left in the 80’s/90’s where the beaches were so much more crowded than this little patch of sand and boardwalk we call Alki… San Diego city beaches were/are crowded with no curfew! yes there is crime, understood, however punishing a society at large for the few bad actors perpetrating knuckleheadedness is not good for morale/emotional well being for those seeking regular average respite from the daily grind.There still are a lot of us who are not into sitting behind a keyboard or a television for entertainment and well-being, we shouldn’t have to be forced to stay inside during the late evening early morning hours because maybe some of us work second or third shift, so we are on a different time schedule, shutting down parks and green spaces with a curfew is Draconian.SPD needs to do a better job of policing with presence and patrol so the rest of us law abiding citizens can enjoy what makes the Pacific Northwest such a cool place to be, sitting in a squad car eating donuts is not enough. I’ve been back here for 5 days now and everything is basically the same but more people and way more expensive with horrendous traffic, with that being said our green spaces should be 24 hours, passing Draconian laws just to keep everybody out for our own protection is not the solution.SPD should be targeting the gangs and those violent entrepreneurs with extreme prejudice so they behave in a civil fashion when they are in the public realm. Down at Alki today looking at those big signs shaking my head (I got married on this beach in 2004)in disqust wondering how this has taken place…Seattle get your act together.
