SEEN OFF WEST SEATTLE: USNS Fisher

(Photo sent by “Boating Motes”)

Thanks for the photos and tips! That big gray boat seen in Elliott Bay off West Seattle a short time ago is the Military Sealift Command vessel USNS Fisher (T-AKR 301). MSC ships like this are basically cargo ships for the military, though their crew is civilian.

Well you can definitely tell it’s a military ship with all that rust lol Cool to see but I wish we would take better care of our fleet

Modern ships like that (keel laid in 1996) are built with high-carbon, high-strength steel that corrodes VERY slowly. The surface rust you see is inconsequential. Nature starts trying to reclaim all ships as soon as they are launched, but today’s modern ships will be scrapped/recycled decades from now due to obsolescence, not decay.

Sorry, comment time is over.
