WEST SEATTLE STORM SCENES: Leaping Longfellow salmon; paddling on ‘Lake Sanislo’

All that rainwater has to go somewhere. Two of the places:

LONGFELLOW CREEK: Manuel sent this video of a leaping salmon along the Dragonfly Park stretch of the creek (south of SW Yancy):

‘LAKE SANISLO’: Part of the school‘s sprawling site was swamped when Amy and family decided to go paddling:

So far this month, the National Weather Service has measured almost 7 inches of rain … normal for this part of November would be just under 3.

VACCINE: Pathfinder K-8 clinic has kid doses available for walkups right now

4:08 PM: We’ve received two notes about this: Though today’s Pathfinder K-8 COVID-19 vaccination pop-up clinic was described on the district website as “full,” we’re told hundreds of doses for 5-to-11-year-olds are available to walkups until 6 pm. The school is on Pigeon Point qt 1901 SW Genesee.

4:15 PM: The district confirms this. But they have 5:30 pm as an end time, while the clinic was originally listed as lasting until 6 pm. (Added: A school employee tells us 6 pm is correct.)

WEST SEATTLE STORM UPDATES: Wind alert extended, Highland Park Way reopens, power restored

(7:11 PM TOPLINES: Highland Park Way hill now open again … California Way has reopened…, Power fully restored … Wind alert extended into Monday afternoon)

In addition to the West Seattle Farmers’ Market closure, other updates:

WIND ALERT: It’s in effect through noon Monday, with south wind 25-35 mph and gusts up to 45 mph. (3:26 PM) The advisory is now extended, in effect until 4 pm Monday, with top gusts possibly 50 mph.

ROAD CLOSURE #1: California Way is closed (updated) west of Ferry, just uphill from Harbor Avenue. SDOT lists the cause as “wires down.” No power outage shown in the area, though. We don’t know if crews are on the scene so we’re heading over to look. (11:27 am: Can’t tell from either side of the closure, but we can confirm it’s still closed.) 1:50 PM UPDATE: SDOT says it’s reopened.

(added 12:41 pm) POWER OUTAGE, ANOTHER ROAD CLOSURE: Thanks for the tips! Power’s out in east West Seattle – hearing from Riverview/Highland Park for starters, The 8th/Roxbury traffic signal is out. … Tree’s down on Highland Park Way hiil and that’s the likely cause of this. Avoid the area. SFD and SPD are responding. … (12:49 pm) Mapped now. 2,200+ customers out. SPD is closing Highland Park Way, both directions.

Lights are out in the area too – including the W. Marginal intersection – as the outage also extends to South Park. (1:46 pm) Still out. Traffic on the detour routes is jammed so even if you’re thinking of trying to get to the 1st Ave. S. Bridge another way, wait if you can. (2:14 PM) Many customers have power back – the map shows 399 still out. (3:26 PM) Thanks to @nrdygrrl for this photo of the down-on-wires tree, via Twitter:

Road’s still closed. Here’s the map showing who’s still out of power.

(4:50 PM) HP Way still closed. No estimate on reopening.

5:59 PM: Seattle City Light says everyone who lost power now has it back.

7:11 PM: SDOT says Highland Park Way is now open again.

Other weather updates – roads, trees, power, etc. – 206-293-6302 voice or text – thank you!

CLOSED: No West Seattle Farmers’ Market today because of windy weather

9:16 AM: Thanks for the tips. The West Seattle Farmers’ Market is CLOSED today because of the windy weather, which is expected to continue throughout the day – the Wind Advisory alert says we could see gusts up to 45 mph. Details to come.

9:27 AM: That’s California south of Oregon, where the market usually would be set up. We talked to market staffers, who tell us that while the street-closure barricades are up right now, they’ll be coming down once they’re sure they’ve reached all the vendors.

Low bridge, West Marginal, the distant future: Here’s what else West Seattle Bridge Community Task Force heard about this week

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

After the update on impending high-bridge repairs – as reported hereSDOT briefed the West Seattle Bridge Community Task Force on the low bridge, West Marginal work, and more.

LOW BRIDGE PROBLEM POSTMORTEM: The recent trouble forced SDOT to do pump work that was already on the schedule for just days after the breakdown, noted bridge-program director Heather Marx. She also said the pump problem affected maritime traffic much more than vehicle traffic, delaying barges with cargo including perishable groceries for Southeast Alaska. So they expedited to November 4-5 a pump replacement that originally had been scheduled for November 9th. They also discovered “a filter had broken” and that added extra work – 16 barrels of hydraulic fluid had to be drained and replaced. There’s one more project ahead, a cylinder replacement planned December 10th-13th:

There’s no impact expected to vehicle traffic but openings for marine traffic will be restricted. Meantime, separate from all this, the controls upgrade for the low bridge is currently set for mid-2022, after the high bridge reopens.

LOW BRIDGE ACCESS: SDOT’s Maureen Sheehan led these updates. Here’s how access is going:

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: 2 notes

Two reader reports in West Seattle Crime Watch:

GAS THEFT IN ARBOR HEIGHTS: Bill reports, “Our son’s truck had its gas tank drilled last night. We’re right on 35 Ave SW at 110th, this was before 11:00 p.m., under a street light, at a bus stop.”

BROKEN WINDOWS: We haven’t heard directly from anyone affected by this, but Nate reports the sightings:

“On our walk from Fauntleroy to the Junction, we’ve seen four Audi Q5 and Q3s with broken front windows. It was super weird that three of them were the same car. One in Fauntleroy, two in Seaview and one in Gatewood. One poor guy had walked out and discovered it just as we were walking by.”

1:50 PM: We don’t know when this happened – nor did the person who texted us about it – but a big tree is down in the Delridge Community Center park, and it’s a reminder that another deluge is on the way, according to forecasters. The National Weather Service says another inch of rain is possible tonight, and up to three inches Monday. Tonight through Sunday night, wind gusting up to 30 mph is possible too. If you’re in a slide-prone zone, a Special Weather Statement about slide risk remains in effect, too. So far this month, we’ve had more than five inches of rain, double what’s considered normal.

4 PM: Thanks to the nearby resident who texted to say it fell either Thursday night or Friday morning – they saw Parks workers taping it off on Friday.

But that ship’s intelligent, and it’s not so sure it wants to be stolen.” The author also notes, “It’s not my first published novel, but it’s my first one with a major publisher, Tor Macmillan.” Rambo has five online appearances in six days next week to publicize and talk about the book. starting Monday night, and including a Tuesday night “virtual reading” – they’re all listed and linked here. Toplines from Admiral Neighborhood Association’s November meeting

 |   Neighborhoods | West Seattle news

This past week was a busy one for community meetings. Here are the toplines from another one we covered, the Admiral Neighborhood Association‘s first “hybrid” meeting – in-person and streamed – on Tuesday night.

NEW PRECINCT COMMANDER: Capt. Martin Rivera, the new commander of the Southwest Precinct (which serves West Seattle and South Park), is continuing a series of get-acquainted stops. He was mostly there to listen, so no presentation, but a rep from Brookdale Admiral Heights voiced concerns about suspicious activity near its entrances, and Capt. Rivera said he’d talk with Crime Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Danner abut working on a plan for the building.

OPERATION NIGHTWATCH: Members of Admiral Church – where the ANA meeting was held – summarized the church’s plan to partner with Operation Nightwatch to provide 10 men with a place to sleep. (Nothing new beyond what we’ve been reporting – here’s our most-recent story.) During discussion, Capt. Rivera mentioned that he had interacted with Nightwatch and described the organization as responsible and well-organized.

HERON’S NEST: As we reported separately, ANA heard from Amanda Lee of The Heron’s Nest, who announced they’d won a $900,000 city grant toward purchasing the West Duwamish Greenbelt site they plan to use for environmental education and repatriate to the Duwamish Tribe.

ELECTIONS: ANA elected next year’s officers at this meeting, including: Drew Sowa will continue as president; Larry Wymer will continue as vice president; Tina Bendermacher is the new secretary; (added) Bridgett Markillie is treasurer; Stephanie Jordan will continue on as concerts coordinator, in hopes ANA’s popular summer series at Hiawatha can return next summer.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Store robbery

Police summaries published today include an armed robbery at the 35th/Barton 7-11, second one there in three months (we reported on a holdup there in August). Police say it happened around 11:30 Wednesday night, and that the robber entered the store, “brandished a handgun, pointed it at the clerk, and demanded money … then fled the store on foot with money and the till.” A K-9 team was brought in for the search but the robber was not found; the summary does not include a description.

Carmilia’s, the boutique at 4528 California SW, is celebrating its 19th anniversary all weekend. Tomorrow, you get a gift with your purchase, and a 20 percent discount (excluding jewelry and Kai). Sunday, “a different gift with purchase.” Then on Monday, the actual anniversary, a chance to spin the wheel and win a discount up to 50 percent. Proprietor Linda Sabee founded the shop in 2002 with no retail experience – as she told us when celebrating anniversary #15, she used to be a kindergarten teacher – and has kept the doors open through ups and downs, pandemic and all, so it’s definitely party time.

Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey!

Westside HEY Coalition

WEST SEATTLE BIRDS: Not another turkey, but close … maybe

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: First, a post in the WSB Community Forums noted a bird sighting believed to be a grouse – a bird that’s in the same family as turkeys. Then today, we received the photo above from Lisa, after a backyard visit near 35th/Andover. Our favorite source for bird ID’ing, Seattle Audubon BirdWeb, lists six species of grouse in the region. We can’t narrow it down. Can you? As Lisa observed, “It certainly wasn’t a normal thing in the neighborhood.”

FRIDAY NIGHT: Commenters’ consensus seems to be ring-necked pheasant.

GIVING: More West Seattle Scouts spend their holiday in service, to honor those who served

A Veterans Day postscript – Jason sends this report and photos from Scout Troop 799‘s cleanup project:

In service, and in recognition of those who’ve served, Scouts from West Seattle Troop 799 gloved up and met at 9 am Thursday morning near Denny International Middle School to pick up trash, clean out rain gardens and storm drains, and enjoy the relatively warm temps and drizzle carried by the atmospheric river flowing over our state throughout this weekend. Afterward, some of them ran a mile at SWAC just to enjoy the rain and fresh air it brings even more!

They collected roughly a dozen trash bags of waste, mostly dropped school supplies, candy and snack wrappers. Nothing dangerous was found, which was a welcome sight, although they were prepared.

Happy Veterans Day, and gratitude from Pack/Troop 799 to all those who’ve served.
