WHALE ALERT: Humpbacks off Alki; orcas in the area too

10:21 AM: Two humpback whales are in the area, reports Kersti Muul. “East of shipping channel, off Alki,” but no direction determined yet. Let us know if you see them! (Not sure you’d know what humpbacks look like? Here’s their page in The Whale Trail‘s species guide.)

1:58 PM: And now orcas are in our area too, Kersti reports – a group of transients southbound off Bainbridge.

Yup. Saw them at about 9:30, headed away from Elliott Bay. two sets of dorsals, lots of diving. Saw them surface three times and then didn’t see them again. What a sight!

sam-c Orca Network did have a report from WSF of 2 humpbacks off Alki east of the shipping lanes posted in comments just after 10am on the 8th. Photos later confirmed earlier baleen in Elliott Bay was known whale MMY0147. Haven’t seen any images/videos of the two traveling together, but presume one to be MMY0147.

Saw one whale  a few hundred yards off the downtown Water Taxi dock while getting off the 8:35 this morning. The crew was saying it was a humpback.
