BIZNOTE: West Seattle Grounds now open

(WSB photos)

Three months ago, we mentioned that a coffee shop to be called West Seattle Grounds was on the way to the former mortgage-broker space at 2141 California SW, next to Mioposto. Now it’s open (thanks to Adam for the tip).

West Seattle Grounds is serving Caffe Umbria coffee, along with baked goods, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, and salads. Hours are 5:30 am-8 pm Mondays-Saturdays, 6:30 am-8 pm Sundays.

P.S. As posted in our West Seattle Jobs Offered section, they’re hiring!

We went in yesterday to check them out. Nice sandwiches….some grilled, etc, healthy looking pastries. Very nice and courteous staff. PLUS they open at 5:30 a.m. Perfect for us on way to work. Coffees, hot chocolate and more. Looking forward to giving them some business.

@Chris, when you say “healthy looking pastries” does that mean you think the pastries look like they have positive health benefits or do you think pastries are of a generous proportion?

  • Chris October 1, 2018 (10:19 pm)

I hope they aren’t “gourmet” $7 breakfast sandwiches. I’ve had enough of the overpriced junk in the area

    • Mike October 2, 2018 (5:58 am)

$7 for a sandwich is pretty normal pricing in Seattle, $15 would be for a nice one that’s “gourmet”. Keep in mind if you go to any coffee shop in Seattle you’re paying $3-$6 just for… coffee drinks. If you’d like something for cheap, $4.50 can get you a McDonald’s breakfast sandwich and drip coffee.

Well, then just stay home and you can enjoy all the balogna and Miracle Whip on Wonder Bread sandwiches that you want. 😀

    • WestSeaGuy80 October 2, 2018 (6:16 pm)

Try the half size breakfast sandwiches from Husky Deli. They’re delicious and huge and ~$4.50. They take a minute to make though so don’t be in a rush.

FWIW the food that was on display when our photographer stopped in:

    is it better than starbucks?

  • north admiral October 2, 2018 (8:38 am)

Stopped by this morning, they certainly were friendly. Latte was good but didn’t try any food.

  • Flowerpot October 2, 2018 (8:58 am)

It looks super cute, but we kind of have a lot of coffee shops in Admiral – Fiore, Admiral Bird, Freshy’s, Olympia Coffee. That said, I’ll be sure to check it out.

    • Dead October 2, 2018 (10:01 am)

We have a lot of people in admiral, too- so I guess the market will decide how many coffee shops to have.

  • JoJoRo October 2, 2018 (11:52 am)

Looks really cute! Looks like all high-top seating. Did they have any low – wheelchair accessible seating options?

  • aa October 2, 2018 (5:31 pm)

I think it’s important to point out that the food displayed in the photo, specifically the salads and sandwiches must be refrigerated. If someone is in the neighborhood and is willing to pose the question you will help the owners avoid a health dept violation and help the customers avoid getting sick.

    • JA October 2, 2018 (9:11 pm)

I would guess those are “DISPLAY PROPS”.

    • WestSeaGuy80 October 2, 2018 (9:29 pm)

Interesting point. I am indeed used to seeing this sort of food in cold cases. (e.g. the starbucks ones that are out are display only, and sound and fog keeps their sandwiches and salads in the fridge)

  • Morgan October 2, 2018 (8:26 pm)

aspiring coffee entrepreneurs…Morgan junction is the section of California not overpopulated with indie coffee shops

    • KM October 4, 2018 (9:55 am)

QED was there and left, maybe the area is not demanding more options, because QED is great stuff.

  • Brayton October 2, 2018 (8:27 pm)

The high top seating and modern environment look nice, but don’t feel inviting and warm. What matters is the coffee, though. Previous comments make it sound like they know their coffee. I’d happily have a latte on the run.

    • RayWest October 3, 2018 (6:43 am)

Brayton — I was thinking the same thing–I’m sure this is a top-notch coffee place quality-wise, but the interior (based on the photo) looks cold and uninviting to almost being stark. That was just my first impression, though–I happen like warm cozy places to enjoy my food and drink. I’ll definitely check them out and wish them nothing but success.

      • junctioneer October 3, 2018 (2:48 pm)

Each to their own. This is exactly my type of place, though some artwork or would would help. Sound & Fog I do find cold and uninviting though.

  • M.B. October 2, 2018 (9:52 pm)

I was wondering EXACTLY the same thing myself, JOJORO! I really am disappointed by the high-top seating trend that’s so popular everywhere. Can anyone confirm if there are any low tables?

    • RayWest October 3, 2018 (6:52 am)

Those really are very high tables and stools. I will not even attempt to mount one as they look a rather dangerous if you’re not super fit and athletic. Maybe the owners should rethink the seating arrangement if they intend to attract a variety of customers.

      • hj October 3, 2018 (10:55 am)

Go check out all the super fit and athletic people sitting on barstools at Poggie. This doesn’t look that much different.

I wish them (and all small businesses) good luck!
    Can’t wait to try it.
Have to admit, not a fan of the interior as it’s 100% opposite of the exterior feel. The outside is a bricked early 20th century looking exterior. Then you come inside and it’s polished steel, hard floors and chrome? Looks a little cold and sterile. Again, food and coffee may be great.
it’s their business, they can do what they want, but I’m surprised they didn’t go for a more “cozy” comfortable looking interior. All that hard floors/walls makes it look like it may be a bit noisy or echoey for conversations. Not everything has to be leather chairs and fireplaces, but maybe something in between. :)

But personal interior tastes aside, GOOD LUCK!

  • Josh Rines October 3, 2018 (5:09 pm)

Low bar. Almost anything is better than Stbux. Come on get out of the rut and support local small businesses.

  • Nancy R. October 4, 2018 (12:10 am)

So excited to have a new coffee shop in the ‘hood! Umbria coffee is great. We may have many coffee shops in N Admiral but few where the coffee is actually dark and not bitter. I do like modern interiors but it really needs some bright colorful art pieces, which honestly is why we haven’t made it in yet- it is so stark-white that it doesn’t look inviting. Maybe they could pair with a local artist to hang their work and offer it for sale?

  • RayWest October 4, 2018 (4:14 pm)

I do have to add that although I find the interior “stark,” I love the light fixtures. Owners, just warm up the walls, add some “pops” of color, or as Nancy R. suggests, hang some colorful art.

No business owner wants your opinions on their decor, if it’s not for you it’s not for you don’t be rude in the comments.

    • RayWest October 5, 2018 (5:20 am)

KPOP – Seriously? No business owner wants their potential customers’ opinions about their business? Any owner who does not listen to what people want, like, or dislike about their business will soon be out of business. Customer feedback is one of the most valuable tools any business owner can utilize. It’s free and highly effective. By the way, no one here was rude. Everyone gave honest assessments about what they like and don’t like and what can make this place better.

  • RarelyEver October 5, 2018 (1:34 pm)

Umbria is THE BEST COFFEE. So glad this place is offering it! Umbria is in South Park, so it’s local, too. I’ll definitely be checking them out this weekend. :)

  • Dolly October 21, 2018 (8:24 pm)

I was in shortly after they opened and my drink was very good. I went back tonight and was disappointed to discover that they closed before the posted closing time. I am not sure that I will make the effort for something that is uncertain.

Sorry, comment time is over.
