LAST CALL: Ever use(d) Lowman Beach Park? Survey for you!

(2012 Lowman Beach aerial photo – pre-Murray CSO Project – by Long Bach Nguyen)

If you missed it in our coverage of the latest Morgan Community Association meeting: Seattle Parks has a short survey for Lowman Beach Park fans, and it’s about to close. The questions are about how, and how often, you use the park – or, how often you did before all the Murray Combined Sewer Overflow Project work. Results will help them determine the fate of Lowman Beach’s tennis court, among other things, when final decisions are made about the park’s compromised seawall. Find the survey here.

If any work is done to Lowman Beach Park, it MUST include a public restroom. Nearest restroom is a mile-and-a-half round trip walk to Colman Pool in Lincoln Park. It’s no wonder I always see people peeing in the bushes. Seems like building a big sewage treatment facility would have been a great time to add a restroom, but no…

I provided this feedback years ago when the project plan was first made public, I’ve corresponded directly with the project manager, and I’ve responded to this survey now.

Well, unless you use the tennis facility, they do not want to hear from you.

Must answer tennis use question, with no ‘none’ option.

Yep huge flaw in the survey.  In order to complete it you must answer that you use the tennis courts at least once per year…so if you use the park but not the court your result is skewed.  All respondents will show they use the court at least a little, when in reality they may not use it at all.  So dumb.

I’ll check out the survey now.  I love the big old trees in this little park, as well as the views.

P.S. Just “completed” the survey. I added this note:

The question about the tennis court is poorly phrased. It doesn’t offer the option “I don’t use the tennis court.” Please revise this survey and extend the deadline to submit it.

How is it even possible? Lowman Beach has been a torn up zone of heavy construction for the last FOUR years?

I live within a stone’s throw. You can’t get anywhere near it. I forgot it was even a park.

They’ve maintained access passages on the N side as well as some connection to the side-street that serves the houses on the S side.  I just hope they keep the fire-ring, one of the few not at golden gardens.

Anyone remember that there used to be a public sign making the driveway to the boat launch as a public road? I do. I’ve been yelled at by local residents that I am using “Their” road, when it is in fact public, as the sign used to state. Furthermore there is a new sign at the bottom of Atlas PL, where it meets Beach Dr, the sign faces west and reads “Road closed ahead” which is outright false. Seems like the city helps the rich keep the public out of “Their” neighborhoods.

I second the park needing  a restroom!

  • WSGirl November 2, 2016 (2:25 pm)

… That’s because they’re determining what to do with the tenniscourts. the Sea wall is collapsing, so when they go in to fix it, I’ll bet they’re trying to determine whether or not to also remove the tennis court. Would be a shame, in my opinion, but they could definitely add a basketball hoop to the area :)

  • Ron Swanson November 2, 2016 (3:00 pm)

I answered “once a year” and told them in the comments to replace the seawall and then replace the tennis court with an off-leash area to legalize the parks most popular use.

    • BarGreMagGun November 2, 2016 (5:48 pm)

      Totally agree with you Ron.

  • seaopgal November 2, 2016 (3:05 pm)

Yes, this survey is clearly designed only for people who use the tennis court. I went ahead and answered it and clarified my answer to the tennis question in the comment field.

OT: thanks for calling that out. Yup, survey is complelely biased in my view based on that. I answered something like “rarely” just to be able to submit the survey! May be accidental, but it sure smacked of a stacked deck to me. I made sure they knew where I stood in the comment section ;)

We use this location for a kayak launch.  A bathroom should be essential.  Nothing against tennis, we play elsewhere, but the survey will have very skewed results.

In the “Wizard of Id” cartoon the Wizard is interviewing poll takers. When the Wizard asked “Are you good?” the applicant answered “How do you want your poll to turn out?” Always liked that ‘toon.

It shouldn’t be add a bathroom but return the bathroom that was there years ago!!

  • Mark November 2, 2016 (10:51 pm)

    More public restrooms are needed.

I contacted the Parks Dept. re the tennis problem in the survey. They said they’d fix the error. Hope they will offer the survey again, and inform the West Seattle Blog so the word can go out to readers.

Lowman Beach is great.  I love the view.  I love the vibe – people come here to watch the sunset, listen to the waves hit the beach and chill.  Lots of dogs sniffing in the grassy area.  Families on the swings.  Folks playing tennis.

  • Lisa November 3, 2016 (9:15 am)

We had our small beach wedding there back in 1999 and it was awesome!  Needless to say, this little park holds a special place in our hearts forever.

  • Trileigh November 3, 2016 (11:23 am)

Funny, I use that park almost daily and don’t remember getting any notification (email or printed) about this survey. I don’t think there’s even a notice posted at the park itself. Before reading these comments, I also critiqued that “use of the tennis courts” question in the space at the end of the survey – they won’t let you answer “never.” I do like the idea of naturalizing the beach.

Sorry, comment time is over.
