West Seattle Crime Watch update: Police search

3:28 PM: If you’ve noticed the police search in the Gatewood/Fauntleroy area – they are looking for someone who might have fired gunshots, no injuries but possible damage found to a fence. The suspect was last seen on SW Willow headed toward Fauntleroy (map) and southbound on Fauntleroy, so they are checking Lincoln Park, too. The suspect was described on the scanner as white, male, around 18, 5’6″, wearing a baseball cap, black shirt, jeans (but keep in mind, that was just a preliminary description).

3:35 PM UPDATE: People in the area tell us that police are searching with rifles out, which would be standard given the nature of the call. Scanner says they’ve heard from workers in the area who think it might have been firecrackers and not gunshots. Search continues.

4:07 PM UPDATE: No luck finding anyone.

Willow as you may know is somewhat north of the park … but “containment” in a search like this does cover a fairly wide area, always in hopes of finding suspect(s) before they get too far – TR

It would be great if there was a very clear way to tell the difference between a firecracker, car backfiring and gunfire. Often confusing and the cause of lots of wasted 911 calls.

I live in the vicinity, and have been hearing what sound to be random fireworks every so often since the Fourth of July. There’s a probability that it’s just another one of those incidences…

Just saw a police car zoom past with sirens going on Harbour Avenue headed that way. Not sure if it’s related.

      Wasn’t.

So…it’s more than 3 hours later. Any update on this?

Nope. That’s right about when the search started breaking up – they’d looked everywhere they could.

That’s a dangerous area! It’s just not the same anymore. Ever since “those people” moved in. You know, those kind with the rain gardens, and the Subarus.

Probably firecrackers. I heard one last night on California AVE. I thought it could’ve been a single gunshot, but reasoned it likely wasn’t…in my limited experience gunshots tend to have slight echo after you hear the initial report (although not always I’m sure); fire crackers do not usually have this echo (unless it’s lit in an semi-enclosed area and you’re close by, I would guess).

Sorry, comment time is over.
