Update: 1 hurt in crash next to Delridge apartment building

10:16 AM: Big initial response to a crash that just happened at Delridge and Willow, but most of the units have been turned back, since it wasn’t what was originally reported – a car hitting a building, which meant an initial “heavy rescue” call, since downgraded. Our crew’s on the way and we’ll update.

10:25 AM: An ambulance is being called for the driver, no major injuries reported. Our crew at the scene says this is at the Willow Court Apartments, where a chain-link fence stopped the car from crashing into a play structure. Traffic is still moving both ways on Delridge, but slowly. Photo to come added.

10:44 AM: Adding a second photo – this is looking north on Delridge, and at left, you can see part of the wooden fence the car went through before going down the slope shown in the top photo; also note a tree was taken out, too. The driver was sitting up, conscious, even before the ambulance arrived, according to our crew.

Just drove by, looks like a car hit something then through the fence and down the hill.

It looks pretty bad. Just drove by on the way home. Appears it took out a rather larger tree before hitting a wooden fence. There was a bumper laying near the sidewalk. It looked like the car flew into the fence, and was thrown down a steep ledge. I thought for sure someone must have died. This wasn’t just a small accident. Police and firemen are there with the area taped off.

Yes, I’m about to add a photo of the downed tree, from up on the street. No, the victim is not seriously hurt. Sitting up, arm taped up. Glad there was nobody in his path. – Tracy

    Whoa!

Anyone know how it happened? My husband and kids saw it, too, it sounded quite awful.

Day 2 of the new booze availability. Seriously, looking at that chain link fence.., it REALLY did it’s job keeping that flying car off of the playground. Can you imagine if children were there? Give an award to that fence! (Good photo-op for the fence company that installed it!)

    Good news no serious injuries.
@KD, totally thoughtless implication about booze day, joking or not.

@KD, Look closer at photo. Ground stopped the car.
Fence posts are at rear tires. Fence didn’t stop do-do.

The fence-stopping-car suggestion was originally mine, from initial field-crew reports, although a shot from a different angle shows it was probably the rockery ultimately that caught the car. Whatever the case, wow, so glad nobody else hurt – this was before the weather cleared up big time or else I could imagine a lot of kids having been out playing … Re: crash cause, no, that always requires some degree of investigation, interviewing victim, etc., which takes a while. Sometimes this sort of thing can even be the result of a sudden medical problem for the driver (not saying there is any hint of that here, or not, but after 30+ years of news, we’ve seen/heard just about every possible cause of a crash)…

Seewhat thesealionstarts; Ummm, no thoughtless intentions; I don’t go like that – I ‘thought’ about what I said. Of COURSE there are many reasons why this happened, but you all know people are going to think of the higher ability to get booze every time they see a scene like this. Unless you think I was being ‘thoughtless’ about the fence and the children. I was being thoughtfully serious about that. Chill out. If I didn’t say it, someone else here would’ve real soon. I was humoring my fellow WSB-posters.

    Delridge gets the weirdest accidents

The fence definitely came down – if the wooden fence didn’t stop the car, there’s no way the chain link one would.

The driver was up walking around and on his phone before paramedics arrived. He was definitely lucky, as some of the fence went through his windshield. I’m a little disappointed that the blog didn’t catch a photo from the driver side, but I may be able to send in the photo we got out our back door.

@ Anon, sorry for your friend. I hope he is feeling better and recovery goes well. My best to him.

Yikes!! This could have ended a WHOLE LOT worse. Glad to hear that the driver was for the most part alright and that there were no kids out playing on that play ground.

Sorry, comment time is over.
