Update: What sounded like a shot, was not

11:43 AM: If you’re seeing a big police response, they’re heading for the 6700 block of 37th SW – conflicting reports of what might have happened, but possibly a shot or shots fired – we’ll have more as we get it.

11:47 AM: Still no confirmation of shots – scanner traffic has even indicated they’re checking out whether “a transformer blew because of a bird.”

11:50 AM: Lt. at the scene confirms the bird scenario. No shots. All’s well.

This is exactly why we love the WSB. The police just streamed past my house and I thought – I’ll check the blog. Thanks for keeping us informed.

Might sound funny but it must have sounded real. I saw 7 police cars racing to the scene. Good job SPD thanks for your protection. If it was a shooting incident they would have been all over it. Nice to know. And also good work WSB always there to disseminate info.

It was impossible to explain in the quick unfolding BUT this went out as a “help the officer” call – there was apparently a KC Sheriff’s Office car in the area and somehow there was concern that a deputy was involved (though this is not their jurisdiction, you could see KCSO in the neighborhood for anything from a warrant service to an off-duty resident), but they verified with the deputy fairly quickly that he/she wasn’t involved – TR

This happened across the street from me! I heard a loud BANG then saw a crow drop dead from the powerlines. I went to the window but couldn’t see anyone. I thought someone shot the crow. While I was considering calling SPD, I heard a lot of sirens. Next thing I saw was 13 police cars appear, fully armed officers approaching the area. I went outside to tell them I saw the crow fall dead and heard the bang. They said the call was “shot(s) fired possible officer involved” They saw the KCSO car and I told the SPD, oh he lives there. They seemed relieved to know they the offices simply lived in the neighborhood. They came in my house and went on to my deck so they could see down the alley. After several minutes they determined that the electrical transformer blew, making the bang and killing the crow. As the SPD were starting to leave the KCSO returned home in his personal car. Together they had a close up view of the crow. SPD took a few photos and then put the dead crow in the garbage can.

It was amazing to watch the swift response, the calmness they maintained and seeing how they worked together. A huge Thanks to the SPD for helping keep us safe. Can you imagine the adrenaline that the SPD officers must have been feeling to respond to such a call? I am very grateful it was only a transformer and one dead crow.

I’m glad the police are watching out for the crows as well as the humans.

    Barb,
It is NOT cool of you to out where a cop lives, even if it is just the block and street.
    In fact it’s somewhat dangerous.
I hope WSB removes your post or edits it ASAP.

    Not for the bird, however.

Thank you SPD and WSB and Barb for the great account of what happened. Although it’s unfortunate the crow died, Barb’s account of what happened gave me a chuckle.

    RIP Crow. *chuckle*

It was my trashcan they put the crow in. Wish they’d put it in a bag first.

That is sad because crows are almost always seen in pairs — they usually are together with one mate in a liftime — so there will probably be a mourning crow hanging around for a while — it can be rather heart breaking to see this behavior when one of the crow pair is killed or dies.

I must disagree. It the officer in question didn’t want the public to know where he lived he wouldn’t park his cruiser outside of his house.

Sorry, comment time is over.
