Sports notes to share this morning from the weekend: First, congratulations to the two West Seattle Soccer Club‘s teams that the club says won statewide championships over the weekend, the BU-11 (boys) and GU-15 (girls) teams both named the Crush.
Second, in high-school basketball: Friday night, West Seattle High School‘s boys-varsity team beat Bainbridge 68-53 on the road, while the varsity girls lost 69-24. Chief Sealth International High School‘s girls-varsity team beat Rainier Beach at home, 54-12, while the varsity boys lost 83-52. And on Saturday, Seattle Lutheran High School‘s boys won at Shoreline Christian 58-46, while the girls lost 46-44. The Sealth games were at home, and we covered them; photos and summaries ahead:

Rainier Beach sent their boys and girls variety teams to Chief Sealth Friday night, and the results were lopsided by the time the games were done. The night started just after six o’clock with the boys’ game; the first half saw one tightly played quarter followed by one that put the game out of reach for Sealth as Rainier Beach cruised to the win.
For most of the first quarter it looked as if it would be one of those games where both teams traded one- or two-point leads. But after an exchange of technical fouls ,Rainier Beach found their stride and put up a 20 point lead in the second quarter. Sealth never recovered from that nor did they find a way to deal with the Vikings’ three big men – Tyrone Cook, Elijah Foster, and Fu Niles, whose shot-blocking shut the Seahawks down. Sealth’s high scorers were Pepe Hernandez with 15 and Bronte Corbray with 9.
In the second game, between the varsity girls’ teams, the story was quite the opposite, with Sealth taking an early lead that led to the win. Sealth gave up four points to Rainier Beach early in the first and then shut down all Viking scoring until the third quarter. Sealth’s coach Katie Maris used her far deeper bench to put away the game. She swapped out her starting five twice in the game. Her high scorer was sophomore guard Samantha Scroggins with 12 points.
